General-Purpose Computation on GPUs in the Browser Using ***

*** is a client-side general-purpose computing on graphics processing units (GPGPU) library for the browser written entirely in JavaScript. Unlike some of the earlier implementations of client-side GPGPU, *** does not require browser support through an explicit GPGPU API or an installation of a custom native runtime browser extension to enable such support. This allows the library to run on all modern platforms, including on mobile devices such as smartphones. It achieves this by using the already widely adopted Web Graphics Library graphics API in a manner that it is not designed for by making use of JavaScript-to-OpenGL Shading Language transpilation. The library abstracts away all the unnecessary implementation details of awkwardly performing GPGPU on a graphics API and, at the same time, provides an API that was designed specifically for GPGPU.

A Web API Ecosystem through Feature Based Reuse

The fast-growing web API landscape brings clients more options than ever before-in theory. In practice, they cannot easily switch between different providers offering similar functionality. We discuss a vision for developing web APIs based on reuse of interface parts called features. Through the introduction of five design principles, we investigate the impact of feature-based reuse on web APIs. Applying these principles enables a granular reuse of client and server code, documentation, and tools. Together, they can foster a measurable ecosystem with cross-API compatibility, opening the door to a more flexible generation of web clients.

IoT cloud-based cyber-physical system for efficient solid waste management in smart cities: a novel cost function based route optimisation technique for waste collection vehicles using dustbin sensors and real-time road traffic informatics

IoT cloud-based connected smart dustbins (equipped with sensors) are imperative for efficient waste management in smart city. Municipal agencies can reduce the use of both man and machine by cutting down their overall waste collection route distance as well as number of waste collection vehicles (WCVs) by deploying this proposed cyber-physical system for route optimization of WCVs with capacitated vehicle-routing model. A novel cost function is mathematically modelled using data from dustbin-sensors and real-time road-traffic with modified Dijkstra's algorithm for optimisation of WCVs routes. Amount of solid waste in the dustbin (GC in %), rate of the filling (Delta G) and real-time/dynamic road traffic information from Google distance matrix advanced application programming interface (API) are used for estimation of the optimised route for WCVs. Optimisation goal of this work is to reduce both capital expense (CapEx) and operational expense (OpEx) of solid waste collection in the city by cutting the WCV fleet size and reducing overall distance covered by WCVs. The proposed route optimisation technique is analytically simulated for Bhubaneswar smart city and the result shows 30.28% saving in overall WCVs route distance and hence reducing OpEx around 29.07% and CapEx around 26.83% by reducing WCV fleet size.

Scientific workflows are becoming increasingly popular as a way to automate complex scientific computations consisting of multiple programs. One of the main motivations behind this development is increased robustness and reproducibility of computational analyses. Chaining together multiple programs using plain scripts, as is often the first step in automating a pipeline, can easily become fragile and error prone due to the manual management of file paths and program invocations. Also, plain scripts are not optimal if for some reason you have to cancel a run and try to restart it from any partially finished steps. It can be hard to know which output files are properly finished and which are truncated from the cancelled run. Last but not least, plain scripts do not by default save an execution trace of what was run, such that the full procedure used to create a specific output file can be clearly presented. These are all aspects that scientific workflows are designed to help with.

Visualizing information on mobile devices

Continuous improvements in computer processing power and graphics capabilities have made it possible to incorporate a wide range of advanced visualization techniques in most computing application domains. Adapting these techniques to PDAs, cell phones, and other mobile devices could harness the power of visualization anytime, anywhere. Unfortunately, the mobility context and technical limitations such as small screen size make it impossible to simply port applications from desktop computers to mobile devices. Because maps are familiar tools that play an important role in mobile location-based services, the author explores current trends in mobile visualization research in the context of a recently developed map-based application.

Towards programmable on-demand lightpath services: current state-of-the-art and open research areas

With emerging programmable network architectures gaining momentum in the networking industry, it is necessary to look at how the services currently offered on traditional network architectures can be fully migrated to the programmable networks. In traditional networks, lightpaths are used for providing high-bandwidth consuming services that are usually sensitive to delay. Lightpath scheduling requires admission control mechanisms, routing and wavelength assignment algorithms, and protection and restoration mechanisms that ensure reliable and efficient lightpath routing. Software defined networking (SDN) is the emerging programmable network architecture that paves the way for easier network management and configuration by using application programming interfaces. The state-of-the-art in lightpath routing for wavelength division multiplexing networks focusing on lightpath scheduling, routing, protection and restoration in optical software defined networks is surveyed. Moreover, open research issues for SDN lightpath routing solution are discussed.

Data from the diagnostics on the TJ-II device will, be collected by several independent systems linked to local area networks (LANs). Some of these systems will consist of digitizers based on well-known standards: CAMAC, VME, VXI, etc. Other allowable systems would be personal computers or workstations with direct control over a specific diagnostic. In principal, any equipment capable of being linked in a LAN can be used as a controller for data collection. All systems will be programmed from a central computer. In this computer, an application program will allow the set up of data acquisition in any system. This will be achieved by communicating systems through a network standard protocol: TCP/IP. The central computer will also centralize the database of discharges. For this purpose, immediately after a discharge, data will be sent from the autonomous systems to the main computer. The latter will coordinate data reception, organize discharge information, and compress data. Data will be transferred rapidly so all diagnostic signals will be available to users for immediate analysis. The computer processes outlined here will provide an application program to provide users with an interface for all operations related to data acquisition, fast signal analysis, and remote control of diagnostics.
