RSSI Fingerprinting Based iPhone Indoor Localization System Without Apple API

The flourish of mobile communications is driven by the increasing number of subscribers and rapid advance of electronic devices. This brings up many multimedia context-aware services, among which real time locating system (RTLS) has become necessary in many applications. To locate a mobile station (MS), RTLS could apply conventional fingerprinting algorithm using received signal strength indicator (RSSI), which allows a MS to collect RSSI data from beacons sent by access points (APs). However, this method does not work for iPhones because of the lack of open access to Apple application programming interface (API) to obtain RSSI values. This paper proposes an alternative approach, under which APs in the monitoring mode are used to collect RSSI values for semi-beacon packets sent from a MS. We implement the packet capture library, which enables us to obtain RSSI values of semi-beacon packets sent by an iPhone. With a region-based k-nearest neighbor (kNN) localization algorithm, we successfully locate an iPhone user in indoor environment. In addition, experimental results show that the proposed approach outperforms the conventional RSSI fingerprinting approach.

Simulations of Multiple Spacecraft Maneuvering with MATLAB/Simulink and Satellite Tool Kit

A software interface between the MATLAB/Simulink environment and the Satellite Tool Kit Environment is introduced. This research is based on the need for validating model performance and visualizing simultaneous multiple-spacecraft proximity maneuvers for emerging missions. It is common for spacecraft systems to be modeled with MATLAB and Simulink. Furthermore, the software package Satellite Tool Kit is often used for animating and evaluating spacecraft maneuvers. In this research, a MATLAB/Satellite Tool Kit interface was developed to propagate six-degree-of-freedom spacecraft models, compared against Satellite-Tool-Kit-generated ephemeris, and animated for analysis. MATLAB script with necessary formatting is used for Satellite Tool Kit initialization and animation. The MATLAB/Satellite Tool Kit simulation interface allows variations in number, shape, and dimensions of spacecraft. Additionally, numerous model and simulation parameters can be selected and synchronized between MATLAB and Satellite Tool Kit. Furthermore, either predetermined, or randomly distributed, initial spacecraft positions and orientations are permitted by the interface. The paper gives enough details to allow the interested readers to adapt to their needs and further develop the proposed software interface.

VAMPYR: A MATLAB-Based Toolset Leveraging MTEX for Automating VPSC

Mean-field crystal plasticity models, like the viscoplastic self-consistent (VPSC) model, are an important component of the integrated computational materials engineering (ICME) workflow in metallurgy. Their computational efficiency in comparison to full-field models enables high-throughput investigations of texture evolution and simplifies integration into multiscale models. VPSC, being arguably the most ubiquitous of these models, is both a powerful tool for experienced computational researchers and a common entry point to simulations for primarily experimental metallurgists. The original FORTRAN implementation of VPSC has a plaintext interface that causes challenges for new users and makes high-throughput VPSC simulations difficult to set up. In this work, a MATLAB-based application programming interface (API) making use of the MTEX crystallographic toolbox is developed in order to provide an intuitive, script-based interface for VPSC. Named VPSC Automation in MTEX for Polycrystal plasticitY Research (VAMPYR) (VPSC Automation in MTEX for Polycrystal plasticitY Research), the API encourages a workflow which enables quick development of high-throughput experiments or multiscale models using VPSC;VAMPYR also includes ease-of-use functions for extracting input data from experimental sources and generating data visualizations of simulation results. An example case of optimizing Voce hardening law parameters to match experimental stress-strain curves demonstrates the process of developing a script to run VPSC using the API.

A Combination Method for Android Malware Detection Based on Control Flow Graphs and Machine Learning Algorithms

Android malware severely threaten system and user security in terms of privilege escalation, remote control, tariff theft, and privacy leakage. Therefore, it is of great importance and necessity to detect Android malware. In this paper, we present a combination method for Android malware detection based on the machine learning algorithm. First, we construct the control flow graph of the application to obtain API information. Based on the API information, we innovatively construct Boolean, frequency, and time-series data sets. Based on these three data sets, three detection models for Android malware detection regarding API calls, API frequency, and API sequence aspects are constructed. Ultimately, an ensemble model is constructed for conformity. We tested and compared the accuracy and stability of our detection models through a large number of experiments. The experiments were conducted on 10010 benign applications and 10683 malicious applications. The results show that our detection model achieves 98.98% detection precision and has high accuracy and stability. All of the results are consistent with the theoretical analysis in this paper.

Flatness-Based Reduced Hessian Method for Optimal Control of Aircraft

Numerical solutions of flatness-based reformulation of optimal control problems lead to an optimization problem with fewer variables and constraints. However, the expressions for the states and controls in terms of the flat output variables can be highly nonlinear and complicated. Hence, this may lead to expensive function evaluations within the optimization problem, degradation of convexity, and issues with convergence. Thus, a flatness-based reformulation of the optimal control problems may not be a viable alternative for computational guidance and control. Alternatively, a novel flatness-based reduced Hessian sequential quadratic programming algorithm is developed in this paper to solve optimization problems for a six-degree-of-freedom aircraft. An analytical null space basis is derived from the linearized differential constraints, which leads to a reduced-dimensional quadratic program with the discretized flat outputs as decision variables. Unlike flatness-based reformulation of the optimal control problem, the null space/reduced Hessian method does not introduce additional nonlinearity and preserves the convexity of the optimization problem. A nonlinear model predictive control problem is solved to demonstrate the reduced Hessian algorithm. The algorithm is validated and Monte Carlo trials are performed to assess the effectiveness of the approach. Computational studies show that the current approach is faster than methods that directly exploit sparsity up to a factor of five.

Getting more third-party participants on board: Optimal pricing and investment decisions in competitive platform ecosystems

In two-sided markets, hardware/software platforms meet the unified and personalized demands of con-sumers through hardware and software products respectively, forming their own ecosystems. For platform enterprises, how to drive third-party value creation through interface extensibility investment (typically on application programming interfaces, or APIs) under different pricing schemes, has become a critical is-sue under intensified competition. In this paper, we build game theoretic models in four platform compe-tition scenarios (NR, NRT, IR, IRT) considering both investment decisions-no investment (N), investment (I), and pricing decisions-registration fee only (R), registration fee and transaction fee (RT), and analyze the competitive equilibrium in each scenario. Our results show that: (1) Although "reducing price" and "enhancing investment" are partial substitutes, platforms are still incentivized to implement both strate-gies. Contrary to the traditional wisdom, when platforms with investment charge both registration and transaction fees, the strengthening of cross-side network effect may lead to an increase in registration fee on both sides. (2) The improvement of interface extension effectiveness (cost reduction for developers per unit of investment from platforms) shifts more developers from single-homing to multi-homing, leading to fiercer market competition and thus lower platform profit in equilibrium. (3) Although implementing investment may not be optimal from the profit perspective, it does help platforms in securing a larger market share on the developer side. (4) The existence of same-side network effect enhances both side users' incentive to enter the market;however, for the platforms, they should carefully mind the irrational price competition to avoid falling into profit-hurting traps.(c) 2022 Elsevier B.V. Open architecture standard for NASA's software-defined space telecommunications radio systems

NASA is developing an architecture standard for software-defined radios used in space- and ground-based platforms to enable commonality among radio developments to enhance capability and services while reducing mission,and programmatic risk. Transceivers (or transponders) with functionality primarily defined in software (e.g., firmware) have the ability to change their functional behavior through software alone. This radio architecture standard offers value by employing common waveform software interfaces, method of instantiation, operation, and testing among different compliant hardware and software products. These common interfaces within the architecture abstract application software from the underlying hardware to enable technology insertion independently at either the software or hardware layer. This paper presents the initial Space Telecommunications Radio System architecture for NASA missions to provide the desired software abstraction and flexibility while minimizing the resources necessary to support the architecture.

Embedded Middleware and Software Development Kit for Area-Based Distributed Mobile Cache System

A new area-based distributed mobile cache system, a sustainable distributed Geocast technology, enables data caching temporarily in a designated local area using short-range communication technologies such as WiFi and Bluetooth. This system needs no infrastructure network and servers. This caching capability and mechanisms are expected to enhance short-range communications as a time-offset communication in a physical world. For that reason, it is sure to accelerate new location-based communication services. This paper reports a developed middleware for a widespread embedded operating system, and a software development kit with an open application programming interface. This middleware is expected to spur third-party developers to produce widely various applications using this proposed platform. Some pseudo-code is provided. Procedures to use this platform are also explained using an implemented geo-location social game(1).

Background: The large amount of data that are currently produced in the biological sciences can no longer be explored and visualized efficiently with traditional, specialized software. Instead, new capabilities are needed that offer flexibility, rapid application development and deployment as standalone applications or available through the Web. Results: We describe a new software toolkit - the Molecular Biology Toolkit (MBT;http://***) - that enables fast development of applications for protein analysis and visualization. The toolkit is written in Java, thus offering platform-independence and Internet delivery capabilities. Several applications of the toolkit are introduced to illustrate the functionality that can be achieved. Conclusions: The MBT provides a well-organized assortment of core classes that provide a uniform data model for the description of biological structures and automate most common tasks associated with the development of applications in the molecular sciences (data loading, derivation of typical structural information, visualization of sequence and standard structural entities).

Massively Parallel Dantzig-Wolfe Decomposition Applied to Traffic Flow Scheduling

Optimal scheduling of traffic over the National Airspace System is computationally difficult. To speed computation, Dantzig-Wolfe decomposition is applied to a linear integer programming approach for assigning delays to flights. The subproblems for this decomposition are solved in parallel via independent computation threads. Experimental evidence suggests that as the number of subproblems/threads increases (and their sizes decrease) for a given problem, the solution quality, convergence, and runtime improve. A demonstration of this is provided by using the finest possible decomposition: one flight per subproblem. This massively parallel approach is compared with one with few threads and with non-decomposed approaches in terms of solution quality and runtime. Since this method generally provides a relaxed solution to the original integer optimization problem, two heuristics are developed to generate an integral solution. Dantzig-Wolfe followed by these heuristics can provide a near-optimal (sometimes optimal) solution to the original problem hundreds of times faster than the standard (non-decomposed) approaches. In addition, when massive decomposition is employed, the solution is shown to be more likely integral, which obviates the need for an integerization step. These results indicate that nationwide, real-time, high-fidelity, optimal traffic flow scheduling is achievable for (at least) 3-h planning horizons.
