Embedded Middleware and Software Development Kit for Area-Based Distributed Mobile Cache System

A new area-based distributed mobile cache system, a sustainable distributed Geocast technology, enables data caching temporarily in a designated local area using short-range communication technologies such as WiFi and Bluetooth. This system needs no infrastructure network and servers. This caching capability and mechanisms are expected to enhance short-range communications as a time-offset communication in a physical world. For that reason, it is sure to accelerate new location-based communication services. This paper reports a developed middleware for a widespread embedded operating system, and a software development kit with an open application programming interface. This middleware is expected to spur third-party developers to produce widely various applications using this proposed platform. Some pseudo-code is provided. Procedures to use this platform are also explained using an implemented geo-location social game(1).

Massively Parallel Dantzig-Wolfe Decomposition Applied to Traffic Flow Scheduling

Optimal scheduling of traffic over the National Airspace System is computationally difficult. To speed computation, Dantzig-Wolfe decomposition is applied to a linear integer programming approach for assigning delays to flights. The subproblems for this decomposition are solved in parallel via independent computation threads. Experimental evidence suggests that as the number of subproblems/threads increases (and their sizes decrease) for a given problem, the solution quality, convergence, and runtime improve. A demonstration of this is provided by using the finest possible decomposition: one flight per subproblem. This massively parallel approach is compared with one with few threads and with non-decomposed approaches in terms of solution quality and runtime. Since this method generally provides a relaxed solution to the original integer optimization problem, two heuristics are developed to generate an integral solution. Dantzig-Wolfe followed by these heuristics can provide a near-optimal (sometimes optimal) solution to the original problem hundreds of times faster than the standard (non-decomposed) approaches. In addition, when massive decomposition is employed, the solution is shown to be more likely integral, which obviates the need for an integerization step. These results indicate that nationwide, real-time, high-fidelity, optimal traffic flow scheduling is achievable for (at least) 3-h planning horizons.

DJMol: An open-source modeling platform for computational chemistry and materials science with a Python interpreter

We present a modular and extendable software suite, DJMol, for performing molecular simulations and it is demonstrated with DFTB+, Siesta, Atomic Simulation Environment, and OpenMD codes. It supports many of the standard features of an integrated development environment and consists of a structure builder and viewer, which could be connected with these electronic structure codes along with a set of data analyzers. This program comprises Java and Python modules and its libraries to carry out a different set of modeling tasks in materials science and chemistry. By adopting a Python interpreter into the software, a range of scriptable Python codes, such as Pymatgen can be incorporated into this programmable modeling platform. DJMol, through its common application programming interface (API), supports multiple modeling codes in the backend and several post-processing tools. It benefits an experienced user by increasing efficiency, while a nonexpert user by easy to use API.

Unified platform for storing, retrieving, and analysing biomechanical applications data using graph database

Sensors and smart equipment are frequently used in biomechanical systems and applications in sports and rehabilitation to measure various physical quantities. Various sensors, measuring different parameters, can produce a large amount of data at high speeds and volumes that must be stored for real-time or post-processing and analysis. In addition to sensor data, metadata is an important component and can vary between biomechanical applications. Currently however, each application typically has its own unique data flow and storage solution. In this research, we present a universal data model solution that can be applied to any sensor-based biomechanical application in sport and physical rehabilitation. Our proposed cloud platform architecture allows for the manipulation of sensor data and metadata using a combination of Big Data and conventional techniques. The main idea of this research is to develop a platform that allows a universal way for any biomechanical application to handle its data regardless of the type of data and metadata. This is achieved by creating a universal data model, and implementing this data model in a generalized architecture using a graph database. We demonstrate the benefits of this approach using examples from existing biomechanical systems and describe the development of the cloud platform architecture and the underlying data model. We also provide an example of the use of this platform in a sport shooting application. This approach is unique in that it allows data from different sources and applications to be stored and processed using the same procedures and techniques, facilitating data analysis and application development. We envision this system will expand to multiple different biomechanical applications in the future. We expect that in time, the ability to compare various data and store different biomechanical datasets will become necessity. Automated performance measurement for 3D building modeling decisions

Building information modeling (BIM) is instrumental in documenting design, enhancing customer experience, and improving product functionality in capital projects. However, high-quality building models do not happen by accident, but rather because of a managed process that involves several participants from different disciplines and backgrounds. Throughout this process, the different priorities of design modelers often result in conflicts that can negatively impact project outcomes. To prevent such unwanted outcomes from occurring, the modeling process needs to be effectively managed. This effective management requires an ability to closely monitor the modeling process and correctly measure the modelers' performance. Nevertheless, existing methods of performance monitoring in building design practices lack an objective measurement system to quantify modeling progress. The widespread utilization of BIM tools presents a unique opportunity to retrieve granular design process data and conduct accurate performance measurements. This research improves upon previous efforts by presenting a novel application programming interface (API)-enabled approach to (a) automatically collect detailed model development data directly from BIM software packages in real-time, and (b) efficiently calculate several modeling performance measures during schematic and design development phases of building projects. These indicators can be used to properly arrange modeling teams in the quest for high-quality building models. The specific objectives of this study to examine the feasibility of a proposed automated design performance measurement framework, and to identify optimal modeling team configurations using empirical performance information. A passive data recording approach allows for the real-time capture of comprehensive user interface (UI) interaction and model element modification events. Novel Feature Descriptor for Low-Resource Embedded Vision Sensors for Micro Unmanned-Aerial-Vehicle applications

Feature point matching is an important step for many vision-based unmanned-aerial-vehicle applications. This paper presents the development of a new feature descriptor for feature point matching that is well suited for micro unmanned aerial vehicles equipped with a low-resource, compact, lightweight, low-power embedded vision sensor. The Basis Sparse-Coding Inspired Similarity descriptor uses theory taken from sparse coding to provide an efficient image feature description method for frame-to-frame feature point matching. This descriptor requires simple mathematical operations, uses comparatively small memory storage, and can support color and grayscale feature descriptions. It is an excellent candidate for implementation on low-resource systems that require real-time performance, where complex mathematical operations are prohibitively expensive. To demonstrate its performance, the feature matching result was used to calculate a frame-to-frame homography that is essential to unmanned-aerial-vehicle applications such as pose estimation and obstacle detection for navigation. The proposed descriptor was tested on two video sequences and one dataset of real aerial images. Experimental results show that, along with performing in situations where existing complex descriptors cannot be used, the Basis Sparse-Coding Inspired Similarity descriptor also performs slightly better than these other methods on the task of homography calculation. Our experimental results and analysis show that the Basis Sparse-Coding Inspired Similarity descriptor is an excellent candidate for a resource-limited vision sensor for micro unmanned aerial vehicles.

In this age of collaborative software development, the importance of usable APIs is well recognized. There already exists a rich body of literature that addresses issues ranging from how to design usable APIs to assessing qualitatively the usability of a given API. However, there does not yet exist a set of general-purpose metrics that can be pressed into service for a more quantitative assessment of API usability. The goal of this paper is to remedy this shortcoming in the literature. Our work presents a set of formulas that examine the API method declarations from the perspective of several commonly held beliefs regarding what makes APIs difficult to use. We validate the numerical characterizations of API usability as produced by our metrics through the APIs of several software systems. Copyright (C) 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
