Epidemiology has made advances, thanks to the availability of real-time surveillance data and by leveraging the geographic analysis of incidents. There are many health information systems that visualize the symptoms of influenza-like illness on a digital map, which is suitable for end-users, but it does not afford further processing and analysis. Existing systems have emphasized the collection, analysis, and visualization of surveillance data, but they have neglected a modular and interoperable design that integrates high-resolution geo-location with real-time data. As a remedy, we have built an open-source project and we have been operating an open service that detects flu-related symptoms and shares the data in real-time with anyone who wants to built upon this system. An analysis of a small number of precisely geo-located status updates (e.g. Twitter) correlates closely with the Google Flu Trends and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention flu-positive reports. We suggest that public health information systems should embrace an open-source approach and offer linked data, in order to facilitate the development of an ecosystem of applications and services, and in order to be transparent to the general public interest.

Designing power electronics converters for harsh environments is challenging due to the absence of components' performance under harsh conditions, the frequent transition and data-passing among various software, and the time-consuming and computationally heavy work flow. This paper promotes using design automation to address the aforementioned design challenges. The implementations include public-accessible component databases, automated co-action among circuit simulators and finite element simulations to perform electrical, electromagnetic and thermal co-design, and finally an exclusion-based work flow with hierarchical computation to reduce computational load. The theorized framework is exemplified on designing a real world 175 degrees C 1.5 kW Three-level Neutral-point-clamped dc-dc converter. A database containing the high-temperature characteristics of SiC MOSFETs and ferrites is established and shared through a web application with graphical user interface. In 310 min, the program, which includes computationally heavy 3D finite element simulation, delivers design output after evaluating the converter's electrical, electromagnetic and thermal performance under 10 million parameter sets. Finally, a 1.5 kW dc-dc converter prototype is built and tested in 175 degrees C ambient temperature to verify the quality of the design output.

Memory resident database systems (MMDB's) store their data in main physical memory and provide very high-speed access. Conventional database systems are optimized for the particular characteristics of disk storage mechanisms. Memory resident systems, on the other hand, use different optimizations to structure and organize data, as well as to make it reliable. This paper surveys the major memory residence optimizations and briefly discusses some of the memory resident systems that have been designed or implemented.

At the IEEE/ACM International Conference for High-Performance Computing, Networking, Storage, and Analysis (SC23), held in Denver, experts discussed the convergence of high-performance computing and cloud computing. They explored how this integration could address current scientific computing limitations, enhance computational capabilities, and foster global collaboration while focusing on economic, security, technical, and community challenges and opportunities.

Cluster and Grid environments mostly require the use of product-specific application programming interface (APIs) to submit, control and monitor computational jobs. The Open Grid Forum standardisation body therefore has developed several specifications to fill the gap and enable developers to code to few standardised APIs. This paper discusses the details of one of these specifications, the Distributed Resource Management application API. We compare the basic concepts of the finalised API to other specifications from the same area and explain issues and findings uncovered during the standardisation process.

The Encyclopedia of Life is a website that hosts information about life on Earth. Its mission is to increase awareness and understanding of living nature through a freely accessible digital source. Information is publicly available through graphical webpages (browser interface) or through an application programming interface (API). We developed Reol, an open-source package for the R environment, which downloads data from the EOL API, searches for and extracts specific information, and builds tables with quantitative data and/or hierarchical classifications. We provide a detailed description how Reol can be used as a bridge between the R environment and the EOL API to extract quantitative or hierarchical content. It will be particularly useful for researchers who want information about taxonomic groups of interest (for example: how much information is known about flatworm species? What are the taxonomic synonyms for bird species?) or construct a taxonomic tree. Reol is a tool for researchers who wish to download and gather data from EOL or its provider pages. We provide numerous functions within R for downloading, gathering data in different forms, creating taxonomic trees, and plotting data, which work with functions already available through various packages. It joins a growing body of R packages that interact with web-based APIs to streamline data acquisition, thereby easing the analysis of large publicly available datasets.

Management decisions can be informed by near-real-time data streams to improve the economics of the farm and to positively benefit the overall health of a dairy herd or the larger environment. Decision support tools can use data management services and analytics to exploit data streams from farm and other economic, health, and agricultural sources. We will describe a decision support tool that couples data analytics tools to underlying cow, herd, and economic data with an application programming interface. This interface allows the user to interact with a collection of dairy applications without fully exposing the intricacies of the underlying system model and understand the effects of different decisions on outputs of interest. The collection of these applications will form the basis of the Dairy Brain decision support system, which will provide management suggestions to farmers at a single animal or farm level. Dairy operations data will be gathered, cleaned, organized, and disseminated through an agricultural data hub, exploiting newly developed ontologies for integration of multiple data sources. Models of feed efficiency, culling, or other dairy operations (such as large capital expenditures, outsourcing opportunities, and interactions with regulators) form the basis of analytical approaches, operationalized via tools that help secure information and control uncertainties. The applications will be independently generated to provide flexibility, and use tools and modeling approaches from the data science, simulation, machine learning, and optimization disciplines to provide specific recommendations to decision makers. The Dairy Brain is a decision support system that couples data analytics tools with a suite of applications that integrate cow, herd, and economic data to inform management, operational, and animal health improving practices. Research challenges that remain include dealing with increased variability as predictions go from herd or pen level down to
