A high performance message-passing system for network of workstations

With the proliferation of Network of Workstations (NOW) environment, there has been a great demand for a high performance message-passing system to implement High Performance Distributed Computing (HPDC) applications over NOW environment. NYNET (ATM wide area network testbed in New York state) Communication System (NCS) is a multithreaded message-passing system developed at Syracuse University that provides low-latency and high-throughput communication services over the Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) based HPDC environment. NCS provides High Performance application Communication interface (HPI) to support applications that demand high-throughput and low-latency communication services. This paper outlines the general architecture of NCS and presents the implementation approach of NCS HPI over an ATM network. This interface has been developed by modifying Fore Systems' ATM application programming interface (API) and its device driver. NCS HPI uses read/write trap routines to bypass traditional operating system calls and kernel-level communication interface (e.g., UNIX System V Streams). It reduces latency, data transfer time, and avoid using traditional communication protocols (e.g., TCP/IP). This substantially improves the communication performance.

Efficient metadata mining of web-accessible neural morphologies

Advancements in neuroscience research have led to steadily accelerating data production and sharing. The online community repository of neural reconstructions *** grew from fewer than 1000 digitally traced neurons in 2006 to more than 140,000 cells today, including glia that now constitute 10.1% of the content. Every reconstruction consists of a detailed 3D representation of branch geometry and connectivity in a standardized format, from which a collection of morphometric features is extracted and stored. Moreover, each entry in the database is accompanied by rich metadata annotation describing the animal subject, anatomy, and experimental details. The rapid expansion of this resource in the past decade was accompanied by a parallel rise in the complexity of the available information, creating both opportunities and challenges for knowledge mining. Here, we introduce a new summary reporting functionality, allowing *** users to efficiently download digests of metadata and morphometrics from multiple groups of similar cells for further analysis. We demonstrate the capabilities of the tool for both glia and neurons and present an illustrative statistical analysis of the resulting data.

Microbial ecology has been enhanced greatly by the ongoing 'omics revolution, bringing half the world's biomass and most of its biodiversity into analytical view for the first time;indeed, it feels almost like the invention of the microscope and the discovery of the new world at the same time. With major microbial ecology research efforts accumulating prodigious quantities of sequence, protein, and metabolite data, we are now poised to address environmental microbial research at macro scales, and to begin to characterize and understand the dimensions of microbial biodiversity on the planet. What is currently impeding progress is the need for a framework within which the research community can develop, exchange and discuss predictive ecosystem models that describe the biodiversity and functional interactions. Such a framework must encompass data and metadata transparency and interoperation;data and results validation, curation, and search;application programming interfaces for modeling and analysis tools;and human and technical processes and services necessary to ensure broad adoption. Here we discuss the need for focused community interaction to augment and deepen established community efforts, beginning with the Genomic Standards Consortium (GSC), to create a science-driven strategic plan for a Genomic Software Institute (GSI).

The most recent advances in the architecture of the Web allow using it as an excellent platform to deliver experiments and simulations over the Internet. However, there are still some challenges related to the animations' accuracy, to user input collection or to real-time communications that have to be accomplished to properly port native application-based experiments and simulations to the Web. The limitations of the standards preceding HTML5 have forced web developers to embed non-HTML objects using a wide range of non-standard plugins and causing an extremely fragmented execution environment where features must be implemented several times in different programming languages to guarantee full compliance with every user-agent. As HTML5 provides a standard -yet fully-featured-environment to develop and execute applications, web user-agents are now more similar to application players than to simple Internet browsers. In this paper we analyze the benefits and pitfalls of these new application programming interfaces (APIs), providing examples of both good and bad instances of research-related use.

Many modern engineering problems are inherently multidisciplinary, requiring input from a variety of subject matter experts. Each discipline may impose its own computational requirements, potentially conflicting with other disciplines. Compounding this, in many fields, experts use specific software that may not interface easily with other disciplines. Therefore, combining multiple fields into multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) may entail significant work on analysis tool interfaces. This paper proposes a standard data and communication interface for MDO applications. Requirements for such a standard are discussed before reviewing relevant technologies. The data conventions and communication protocol for the proposed standard, Philote, are detailed for both explicit and implicit disciplines. Numerical studies were conducted to benchmark performance and quantify latency as well as to demonstrate Philote's ability to operate over large geographical distances. Finally, the wider ramifications of the proposed standard are discussed with a particular focus on heterogeneous and cloud-native computing.

The literature presents many application programming interfaces (APIs) and frameworks that provide state of the art algorithms and techniques for solving optimisation problems. The same cannot be said about APIs and frameworks focused on the problem data itself because with the peculiarities and details of each variant of a problem, it is virtually impossible to provide general tools that are broad enough to be useful on a large scale. However, there are benefits of employing problem-centred APIs in a R&D environment: improving the understanding of the problem, providing fairness on the results comparison, providing efficient data structures for different solving techniques, etc. Therefore, in this work we propose a novel design methodology for an API focused on an optimisation problem. Our methodology relies on a data parser to handle the problem specification files and on a set of efficient data structures to handle the information on memory, in an intuitive fashion for researchers and efficient for the solving algorithms. Also, we present the concepts of a solution dispenser that can manage solutions objects in memory better than built-in garbage collectors. Finally, we describe the positive results of employing a tailored API to a project involving the development of optimisation solutions for workforce scheduling and routing problems.

Taking attendance in schools is an important daily activity which is directly related to students' academic performance. Traditional roll-call-based or signature-based approaches for attendance keeping are cumbersome, time consuming, and susceptible to manual errors and fraudulent maneuvers. With a view to digitalizing the process of taking and maintaining attendance record, in this paper, we present a distributed approach to attendance management using smartphones and cloud computing web services that offer high degree security and scalability. The main objective in developing the proposed attendance management system has been an implementation that does not rely on any dedicated infrastructure, and hence reduces cost as much as possible, enabling a wide range of organizations regardless of size and budgetary constraints to adopt such a system. It goes without saying that such cost reduction is inherently associated with some trade-offs which are also discussed in the paper.

Public Windows interface (PWI) is an effort by several computer industry leaders to ensure that the Microsoft Windows application programming interface (API) moves into the world of open systems. By formalizing the existing API as a standard, PWI will provide a snapshot to which developers can refer and upon which they can build their applications. By making PWI an open standard, all parties will have an equal opportunity to compete and to propose future changes. PWI supporters have encouraged Microsoft to submit its complete API to a neutral standards body and to agree to abide by changes and extensions approved by that body. So far, Microsoft has declined to do so. Certain of the technology companies who see the value of creating a formal standard have committed resources to the laborious task of fully and formally documenting the API. These companies will submit the resulting specification to the appropriate neutral standards body upon its completion, where it will be available for all to use at no cost. With PWI as a new standard, users will be able to choose among multiple implementations, leverage their prior investments, and use familiar applications on a host of new devices. Independent software vendors will benefit from a more stable, open API, and will be able to funnel their resources into new development. Systems vendors will broaden the range of applications available for their platforms. In short, PWI will bring the benefits of open systems to the PC world
