Mapping clinical attributes from hospital information systems to standardized terminologies may allow their scientific reuse for multicenter studies. The Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) defines synonyms in different terminologies, which could be valuable for achieving semantic interoperability between different sites. Here we aim to explore the potential relevance of UMLS concepts and associated semantic relations for widely used clinical terminologies in a German university hospital. To semi-automatically examine a sample of the 200 most frequent codes from Erlangen University Hospital for three relevant terminologies, we implemented a script that queries their UMLS representation and associated mappings via a programming interface. We found that 94% of frequent diagnostic codes were available in UMLS, and that most of these codes could be mapped to other terminologies such as SNOMED CT. We observed that all examined laboratory codes were represented in UMLS, and that various translations to other languages were available for these concepts. The classification that is most widely used in German hospital for documenting clinical procedures was not originally represented in UMLS, but external mappings to SNOMED CT allowed identifying UMLS entries for 90.5% of frequent codes. Future research could extend this investigation to other code sets and terminologies, or study the potential utility of available mappings for specific applications.

This work describes HEGEL (High-fidElity tool for maGnEto-gasdynamics simuLations) a high-fidelity and flexible software for hypersonics and plasma simulations. HEGEL is written in object-oriented fashion using modern Fortran 2008, and may be interfaced with other solvers for multi-physics calculations (e.g., plasma wind tunnel). The governing equations are discretized in space based on the cell-centered finite volume method. Time integration may be accomplished using explicit, implicit or implicit-explicit methods. Parallelization is realized through the combined use of MPI and PETSC libraries. For the purpose of a flexible implementation, the solver is designed by minimizing the dependency on the details of the fluid model, a feature which allows for treating calorically perfect gases, combustible mixtures as well as multi-component plasmas under either equilibrium or non-equilibrium conditions within the same tool. application examples are here presented to show the main capabilities of the solver.

The order of execution of computational kernels for Single-Program, Multiple-Data (SPMD) programs is usually determined at compile time. These static predetermined schedules can lead to performance issues at runtime, and are difficult to implement for inhomogeneous situations, such as variable-order or multi-physics applications. It is especially challenging to generate performant schedules when it is unknown whether specific kernels require execution, as a function of user inputs, or the kernel execution time changes dependent on the hardware. This paper presents a solution to this problem by dynamically scheduling computational kernels at runtime using directed acyclic graphs to track the data dependencies between kernels. This system is specifically designed to leverage existing computational infrastructure as much as possible, facilitating the extension to legacy applications. This scheduling system is demonstrated using the eddy high-order multi-physics solver developed at NASA. The details regarding the implementation, our experiences using this system, and performance are discussed.

This paper is written to honor Rafael T. Haftka's seminal contributions to the field of multidisciplinary design optimization. We focus on those contributions that had a direct impact on our research, namely: the adjoint method for computing derivatives, wing aerostructural design optimization, and architectures for multidisciplinary design optimization. For each of these topics, we describe Haftka's contributions, how they impacted our research, and examples of what they enabled us to do. The overarching theme of the contributions and developments described in this paper is the efficient computation of derivatives, which together with gradient-based optimizers enables the optimization with respect to large numbers of design variables, even when using costly high-fidelity models.

With the advancement of technology and the spread of multi-core systems, the need for parallelization arises and the interest in programming models is growing. At the same time, new distributed computing models have been proposed, being in fierce competition to obtain the highest possible performance. The Drop Computing Paradigm proposes the idea of decentralized computing over ad-hoc opportunistic networks of mobile and Edge devices. In this respect, the Drop Computing model does not only aim to achieve a minimum turnaround time but also to optimize other characteristics related to mobile devices, such as limited resources and opportunistic communication. Therefore, it is necessary to define a new programming model called DroMPI that intends to extend the capabilities of current parallel and distributed programming models, based on the Drop Computing paradigm. Therefore, the solution aims to develop a library that takes advantage of hardware capabilities in the interest of the Drop Computing paradigm and also provides programmers with a high-level programming interface. The library's features will be based on the Message Passing interface (MPI) standard, which will be responsible for inter-node parallelization. The name of the library, DroMPI, is an acronym for Drop Computing and MPI. The implementation of the model will be responsible for the management of communication between nodes and for providing an application programming interface (API) for the development of parallel applications in the Drop Computing paradigm.

Robotic process automation has been maturing with significant speed and organizations that started using RPA during the past years now automate the "low hanging fruit" with the best return on investment. The organizations strive to utilize RPA to get a higher value. However, the deployment of RPA on multiple processes is complex and demanding in terms of costs and resources. In this research, we focused on the reduction of the RPA bot duration by using the applications' API in the RPA automation. We compared the duration of RPA bots on three processes. The three processes were automated with RPA technology via GUI and also via API. The results indisputably show that using API in RPA automation has a positive impact on its duration. RPA bot using API was, in some cases, ten times faster than RPA bot using GUI. The average duration change of using API against GUI was in the interval from 84.01% to 91.87%. This change shows the enormous acceleration of RPA bot and the impactful benefits of the use of API in RPA automation of processes. We may thus conclude that API is a good complement to RPA automation. RPA developers and RPA architects should use API when it is possible for better utilization of RPA robots.

Computational ecosystems for data-driven medical genomics

In the path towards personalized medicine, the integrative bioinformatics infrastructure is a critical enabling resource. Until large-scale reference data became available, the attributes of the computational infrastructure were postulated by many, but have mostly remained unverified. Now that large-scale initiatives such as The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) are in full swing, the opportunity is at hand to find out what analytical approaches and computational architectures are really effective. A recent report did just that: first a software development environment was assembled as part of an informatics research program, and only then was the analysis of TCGA's glioblastoma multiforme multi-omic data pursued at the multi-omic scale. The results of this complex analysis are the focus of the report highlighted here. However, what is reported in the analysis is also the validating corollary for an infrastructure development effort guided by the iterative identification of sound design criteria for the architecture of the integrative computational infrastructure. The work is at least as valuable as the data analysis results themselves: computational ecosystems with their own high-level abstractions rather than rigid pipelines with prescriptive recipes appear to be the critical feature of an effective infrastructure. Only then can analytical workflows benefit from experimentation just like any other component of the biomedical research program.

An essential aspect of the collaborative multidisciplinary preliminary design process of aircraft engines is the involvement of a large number of experts from different disciplines and the usage of numerous tools and workflows. This is a major challenge, especially in the area of data management, as large amounts of data are generated that have to be exchanged and traced via a multitude of interfaces. The purpose of the paper is to present an approach of a central data model as a vehicle for data management in collaborative aircraft engine preliminary design. The first part describes the general structure and abstract definition of the developed data model utilizing modeling languages. Subsequently, a detailed description of the geometric parameterization concerning important engine components and additional data structures follows. Besides the methodology, the software implementation to support this approach is presented in detail, including data serialization and data identification, as well as automated capturing and storage of provenance data throughout the design process. The functionality of the approach is demonstrated by means of examples derived from the preliminary engine design.

This study aims to estimate passenger demand of Urban Air Mobility (UAM) for airport ground access trips while considering airspace restrictions in the Dallas-Fort Worth region. UAM is a concept mode of transportation designed to bypass ground congestion for timesensitive, price-inelastic travelers using autonomous, electric aircraft with Vertical Takeoff and Landing (VTOL) capabilities. Airport ground access trips constitute a trip purpose that can utilize this mode. This study analyzes originating ground access trips for two major airports in the Dallas-Fort Worth region: Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and Dallas Love Field Airport (DAL). First, a mode choice model is calibrated on the existing airport ground access behavior. UAM demand is then estimated using the developed model, airspace restrictions, and the results from UAM demand stated-preference surveys in literature. Airspace restrictions consist of unusable pieces of airspaces based on current air traffic patterns, where the placement of UAM vertiports and overflying of UAM vehicles are prohibited. The demand model considers the trajectories of the UAM vehicles, which navigate on pre-defined routes inside Class-B airspace to prevent Air Traffic Control (ATC) involvement requirements. This study includes sensitivity analyses of UAM demand to the cost per passenger mile (CPM), number of vertiports placed in the region, and other secondary factors like vertiport location, intermodal cost, fixed cost, and average speed. Corridors with significant UAM demand are identified from the spatial distribution of demand and potential bottlenecks in the UAM network. The findings predict up to 4% market share of UAM for trips to the airport at the optimistically lower fare of $2 per passenger mile (in addition to the fixed cost of $23) and a 50-vertiport UAM network. Average Value of Times ( VOTs) for business and non-business travelers are estimated to be around $57/hr and $36/hr, respectively. Business

Developers often release different versions of their applications to support various platform/programming-language application programming interfaces (APIs). To migrate an application written using one API (source) to another API (target), a developer must know how the methods in the source API map to the methods in the target API. Given a typical platform or language exposes a large number of API methods, manually writing API mappings is prohibitively resource-intensive and may be error prone. Recently, researchers proposed to automate the mapping process by mining API mappings from existing code-bases. However, these approaches require as input a manually ported (or at least functionally similar) code across source and target APIs. To address the shortcoming, this paper proposes TMAP: Text Mining based approach to discover likely API mappings using the similarity in the textual description of the source and target API documents. To evaluate our approach, we used TMAP to discover API mappings for 15 classes across: 1) Java and C# API, and 2) Java ME and Android API. We compared the discovered mappings with state-of-the-art source code analysis based approaches: Rosetta and StaMiner. Our results indicate that TMAP on average found relevant mappings for 57% more methods compared to previous approaches. Furthermore, our results also indicate that TMAP on average found exact mappings for 6.5 more methods per class with a maximum of 21 additional exact mappings for a single class as compared to previous approaches.
