The advent of cloud, big data, and mobile creates fast-growing demand of storage. Cloud service providers and data centers are looking for cost-effective storage solution alternative to traditional high-cost embedded-system based storages to meet the need of newly emerging applications, such as messaging, video streaming, data analytics, etc. In particular, they are facing the challenge of lowering cost by accommodating multi-workload on a single instance of storage without compromising workload performance requirements. Software-defined storage (SDS) is a new generation of storage system. Unlike the traditional embedded-system based storages, the SDS uses a software-stack above commodity hardware to provide more valuable and cost-effective features. To meet the challenge the cloud service providers and the data centers are facing, the architecture of a new SDS platform called Federator is proposed in this paper. This paper argues that the architecture of a SDS platform should have three main characteristics: 1. the separation of the control and data path, 2. self-configuration of storage resources, and 3. RESTful APIs for new business extension. A new approach for self-configurable SDS is designed within Federator. This approach includes two types of neural network, which provides optimal storage resource configuration for any type of application. With the clear separation of the control and the data path, the intelligent self-configuration technologies, and the standard RESTful API, Federator is expected to better meet the requirements of the new applications in ever-changing computing environments.

i3FR is a system for optimizing the distribution of fresh goods, using a fleet of vehicles, which must be integrated with an existing Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software, while avoiding disruption of established schedules and procedures. In terms of delivery optimization, the most similar problem in literature is the wellestablished and experimented Vehicle Routing Problem with Time Windows (VRPTW), which is, by nature, a multiple objective problem where the number of vehicles and the total traveled distance must be minimized. In this paper, the overall architecture of the i3FR system is presented, which includes several modules and services (such as ERP, routing optimization and data acquisition modules), and the communication between them. The novelty in the proposed architecture comprises: (i) the application to a fresh goods distribution network, with multiple restrictions on goods' acclimatization;(ii) a data acquisition system which includes vehicle data and environmental data from the vehicles' refrigerated volumes, such as temperature;and (iii) the integration of the VRPTW optimization system with an existing ERP. A case-study is described and validates the overall implementation. The main contribution of paper is the proposal of a multi-layered architecture to integrate existing ERP software with a route optimization and a temperature data acquisition module.

Themis-ml: A Fairness-Aware Machine Learning interface for End-To-End Discrimination Discovery and Mitigation

As more industries integrate machine learning into socially sensitive decision processes like hiring, loan-approval, and parole-granting, we are at risk of perpetuating historical and contemporary socioeconomic disparities. This is a critical problem because on the one hand, organizations who use but do not understand the discriminatory potential of such systems will facilitate the widening of social disparities under the assumption that algorithms are categorically objective. On the other hand, the responsible use of machine learning can help us measure, understand, and mitigate the implicit historical biases in socially sensitive data by expressing implicit decision-making mental models in terms of explicit statistical models. In this article we specify, implement, and evaluate a "fairness-aware" machine learning interface called themis-ml, which is intended for use by individual data scientists and engineers, academic research teams, or larger product teams who use machine learning in production systems.

The gender binary will not be deprogrammed: Ten years of coding gender on Facebook

A February 2014 iteration of Facebook's software upgraded the number of options for gender identification from 2 to 58. Drawing on critical theoretical approaches to technology, queer theory, and insights from science and technology studies, this iteration is situated within a 10-year history of software and user modifications that pivot around gender. I argue that the gender binary has regulated Facebook's design strategy while the co-existence of binary and non-binary affordances has enabled the company to serve both users and advertising clients simultaneously. Three findings are revealed: (1) an original programming decision to store three values for gender in Facebook's database became an important fissure for non-binary possibilities, (2) gender became increasingly valuable over time, and (3) in the deep level of the database, non-binary users are reconfigured into a binary system. This analysis also exposes Facebook's focus on authenticity as an insincere yet highly marketable regulatory regime.

The concept of programmable nodes and active networks introduces programmability into communication networks. Code and data can be sent and modified on their ways to destinations. Recently, various research groups have designed and implemented their own execution platforms for active networks. Each design has its own benefits and drawbacks. Hence, there exist interoperability problems among them. Therefore in this paper, we introduce a concept that is similar to the socket programming for writing network programs. A set of simple interfaces, the Active Network Socket programming (ANSP), for programming active applications is established. The resulting active applications will be able to work on top of all other execution environments in future. The ANSP offers a concept that is similar to 'write once, run everywhere.' It is an open programming model that active applications can work on all execution environments. It solves the heterogeneity within the active networks. This is especially useful when active applications need to access all regions within a heterogeneous network to deploy special service at critical points or to monitor the performance of the entire networks. Instead of introducing a new platform, our approach provides a thin, transparent layer on top of existing environments that can be easily installed for all active applications. The enterprise architecture presents a view of how software utilities and applications are related to one another under unifying rules and principles of development. By constructing an enterprise architecture, an organization will be able to manage the components of its systems within a solid conceptual framework. This largely prevents duplication of effort, focuses the organization on its core technical competencies, and ultimately makes software more maintainable. In the beginning of 2003, several prominent challenges faced software development at the GBT. The telescope was not easily configurable, and observing often presented a challenge, particularly to new users. High priority projects required new experimental developments on short time scales. Migration paths were required for applications which had proven difficult to maintain. In order to solve these challenges, an enterprise architecture was created which includes five layers: 1) the telescope control system, and the raw data produced during an observation, 2) Low-level application programming interfaces (APIs) in C++, for managing interactions with the telescope control system and its data, 3) High-Level APIs in Python, which can be used by astronomers or software developers to create custom applications, 4) application Components in Python, which can be either standalone applications or plug-in modules to applications, and 5) application Management Systems in Python, which package application components for use by a particular user group (astronomers, engineers or operators) in terms of resource configurations. This presentation describes how these layers combine to make the GBT easier to use, while concurrently making the software easier to develop and maintain.

Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) are complex systems that require expertise from multiple domains in their design, implementation, and validation. One cost-effective technique for validation of CPS is the integration of two or more domain-specific simulators into a joint simulation called a co-simulation. Standards such as the High Level Architecture (HLA) have been developed in part to simplify the co-simulation development process. However, CPS co-simulation still requires significant expertise, especially when the goal is the integration of a new domain-specific tool or simulator. The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has released a software platform called the Universal CPS Environment for Federation (UCEF) to simplify the development of CPS co-simulations. UCEF provides two approaches to integrate tools and simulators. The first approach is a Java library called the UCEF Gateway that limits the development effort to a list of callback functions in a well-defined simulation life cycle. The second approach is a Representational State Transfer (REST) server developed using the gateway for applications that can implement a Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)/Internet Protocol (IP) client. This paper describes how both approaches are implemented to expedite the integration of new domain-specific tools and simulators.

We present a novel physics-informed neural network modeling approach for bias estimation in corrosion-fatigue prognosis. The hybrid approach is designed to merge physics-informed and data-driven layers within deep neural networks. The result is a cumulative damage model in which the physics-informed layers are used to model the relatively well understood phenomenon (crack growth through Walker's model) and the data-driven layers account for the hard-to-model physics (i.e., bias in damage accumulation due to corrosion). A numerical experiment is used to present the main features of the proposed physics-informed neural network for damage accumulation. The test problem consists of predicting corrosion-fatigue of an Al 2024-T3 alloy used on panels of aircraft wing. Besides cyclic loading, the panels are also subjected to saline corrosion. The physics-informed neural network is trained using full observation of inputs (far-field loads, stress ratio and a corrosivity index - defined per airport) and very limited observation of outputs (crack length at inspection for only a small portion of the fleet). Results show that the physics-informed neural network is able to learn the correction in the original fatigue model due to corrosion and predictions are accurate enough for ranking damage in different airplanes in the fleet (which can be used to prioritizing inspection).

Fifth generation (5G) networks are expected to incorporate more intelligence in order to predict the traffic and mobility patterns and to optimize the performance. Multi-access-Edge Computing may contribute to performance optimization by distributing cloud computing and storage capabilities in the vicinity to end users. In this paper, we propose a new mobile edge service which enables external applications to provide information about foreseen or expected User Equipment (UE) activity and mobility. The applications may gather radio network and location information to calculate UE behavior patterns and to send to the network information that may help to optimize resource management procedures.

Computing power and molecular simulation methodology have improved dramatically over the past decade, and for some systems molecular models are reaching a point where they can provide information that approaches or surpasses the quality of real experimental data. Molecular simulation can also be a potent tool for developing qualitative understanding, and this feature suggests widespread use of molecular simulation as a tool for teaching. Broader use of molecular simulation for these purposes requires tools that promote understanding and application of simulation software. We present an "object-oriented" view of molecular simulation that can help conceptualize and organize its elements, and discuss software development tools that we have constructed that enable non-experts in simulation or graphical programming to create instructive molecular simulations. We finish with an example of one such simulation applet, which we have used in the classroom. Tools described here are available on the web at ***/etomica. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V.
