Smart Factories characterize as context-rich, fast-changing environments where heterogeneous hardware appliances are found beside of also heterogeneous software components deployed in (or directly interfacing with) IoT devices, as well as in on-premise mainframes, and on the Cloud. This inherent heterogeneity poses major challenges particularly when a high degree of resiliency is needed, and the ubiquitously deployed software components must be replaced or reconfigured at real-time to respond to the most diverse events, ranging from an out-of-range sensor detection, to a new order issued by a customer. In this work, a software framework is presented, which allows to deploy, (re)configure, run, and monitor the most diverse software across all the three layers of the Smart Factory (edge, fog, Cloud), from remote, via API calls, in a standardised uniform manner, relying on containerization technologies, and on a variety of software technologies, frameworks, and programming languages, including Node-RED, MQTT, Scala, Apache Spark, and Kafka. The most recent advances in the framework design, implementation, and demonstration, which led to the introduction of the so-called Crazy Nodes, are presented and motivated. A comprehensive proof-of-concept is given, where user interfaces and distributed systems are created from scratch via API calls to implement AI-based alerting systems, Big Data stream filtering and transformation, AI model training, storage, and usage for one-shot as well as stream predictions, and real-time Big Data visualization through line plots, histograms, and pie charts.

This work presents plato (PLAsmas in Thermodynamic nOn-equilibrium), a high-fidelity library for the thermodynamics, transport, kinetics, and radiation of equilibrium and non-equilibrium multi-component plasmas. plato is implemented in a modular and extensible fashion using Fortran 2003/2008 and can also be utilized in C and C++ codes. The theoretical framework of the library is based on non-equilibrium kinetic theory for dilute gases. A distinctive feature of plato is the availability of a hierarchy of physico-chemical models of increasing complexity and accuracy, ranging fromlegacymulti-temperature to grouping and/or collisional-radiative models. application examples are presented and discussed to demonstrate the main features and capabilities of the library.

The earth's orbit is becoming increasingly crowded with debris that poses significant safety risks to the operation of existing and new spacecraft and satellites. The active tether-net system, which consists of a flexible net with maneuverable corner nodes, launched from a small autonomous spacecraft, is a promising solution to capturing and disposing of such space debris. The requirement of autonomous operation and the need to generalize over debris scenarios in terms of different rotational rates makes the capture process significantly challenging. The space debris could rotate about multiple axes, which along with sensing/estimation and actuation uncertainties, call for a robust, generalizable approach to guiding the net launch and flight one that can guarantee robust capture. This paper proposes a decentralized actuation system combined with reinforcement learning based on prior work in designing and controlling this tether-net system. In this new system, four microsatellites with thrusters act as the corner nodes of the net, and can thus help control the flight of the net after launch. The microsatellites pull the net to complete the task of approaching and capturing the space debris. The proposed method uses a reinforcement learning framework that integrates a proximal policy optimization to find the optimal solution based on the dynamics simulation of the net and the MUs in Vortex Studio. The reinforcement learning framework finds the optimal trajectory that is both energy-efficient and ensures a desired level of capture quality.

The paper contributes to the development of a general-purpose modeling, motion simulation and off-line programming system applicable to various manipulators and mechanisms. It is based on the popular CAD software SolidWorks, widely used in many industries, and its application programming interface (API). Implemented as a SolidWorks macro (written in VBA), the system allows the direct usage of the existing robot 3D models created for manufacturing purposes and eliminates the need for additional motion simulation software, thus providing an integrated solution for the simultaneous execution of design and simulation tasks. The lightweight integration into SolidWorks and the effective interface to controllers or standalone simulators that generate the motion of the manipulators distinguish the proposed development from the currently available CAD-based robot motion simulators.

The Multidisciplinary Design Analysis and Optimization (MDAO) community has developed a multitude of algorithms and techniques, called architectures, for performing optimizations on complex engineering systems which involve coupling between multiple discipline analyses. These architectures seek to effciently handle optimizations with computationally expensive analyses including multiple disciplines. We propose a new testing procedure that can provide a quantitative and qualitative means of comparison among architectures. The proposed test procedure is implemented within the open source framework, OpenMDAO, and comparative results are presented for five well-known architectures: MDF, IDF, CO, BLISS, and BLISS-2000. We also demonstrate how using open source soft- ware development methods can allow the MDAO community to submit new problems and architectures to keep the test suite relevant.

This paper explores the role of application programming interface, (API), in Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums (GLAM) sector, and reflects on its role for opening up cultural digital heritage for inclusive future memory making. It also discusses possibilities of a participatory API ecosystem, going beyond high quality metadata and data interoperability. APIs are often seen as facilitators for opening up knowledge, but when it comes to future memory making, little is known with regards to the power relations that are constructed within the digital ecosystem and how does this influence the interplay. The paper proposes a contribution towards this domain, critically exploring aspects that are facilitating or hindering people's participation for enabling future collective memory making.

Modern software development often involves the use of complex, reusable components called application programming interfaces (APIs). Developers use APIs to complete tasks they could not otherwise accomplish in a reasonable time. These components are now vital to mainstream software development. But as APIs have become more important, understanding how to make them more usable is becoming a significant research question. To assess the current state of research in the field, we conducted a systematic mapping. A total of 28 papers were reviewed and categorized based on their research type and on the evaluation method employed by its authors. We extended the analysis of a subset of the papers we reviewed beyond the usual limits of a systematic map in order to more closely examine details of their evaluations - such as their structure and validity and to summarize their recommendations. Based on these results, common problems in the field are discussed and future research directions are suggested.

Testing of embedded devices is a big challenge in a changing and competitive technical environment, as testing of one embedded application is not similar to another. For testing of embedded system generic middleware, device driver and operating systems are required and ruled over target hardware for the execution. Companies developing products based on embedded systems understand the fact that high quality and unique application software plays an important role in the differentiation of their products from their competitors. This generic interface can test the various services of the embedded system, and supports unit test and integration test which are based system testing technology. By using generic interface in the target embedded platform to do testing the results show that our constructed testing interface is workable. This paper, in the perspective of software solution, presents a generic API for testing the target embedded system.

Recent years have witnessed an explosion of work on Big Data. Data-intensive applications analyze and produce large volumes of data typically terabyte and petabyte in size. Many techniques for facilitating data processing are integrated into data-intensive applications. API is a software interface that allows two applications to communicate with each other. Streaming APIs are widely used in today's Object-Oriented programming development that can support parallel processing. In this dissertation, an approach that automatically suggests stream code run in parallel or sequentially is proposed. However, using streams efficiently and properly needs many subtle considerations. The use and misuse patterns for stream codes are proposed in this dissertation. Modern software, especially for highly transactional software systems, generates vast logging information every day. The huge amount of information prevents developers from receiving useful information effectively. Log-level could be used to filter run-time information. This dissertation proposes an automated evolution approach for alleviating logging information overload by rejuvenating log levels according to developers' interests. Machine Learning (ML) systems are pervasive in today's software society. They are always complex and can process large volumes of data. Due to the complexity of ML systems, they are prone to classic technical debt issues, but how ML systems evolve is still a puzzling problem. This dissertation introduces ML-specific refactoring and technical debt for solving this problem.

This study endeavours to direct the progression of multilingual messaging applications, fostering profound connectivity and collaboration in the ever-expanding digital landscape through the means of presenting sustainable and efficient architecture.
