In this work, we present an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) simulation-based, hardware and software development and verification architecture structured around the Robot Operating System (ROS). One of the key expectations of such a system is a graceful increase in architectural and computational complexity as the number of vehicles and vehicle complexity increases. In addition, the system is expected to provide the ability to test and verify algorithms both at the software and hardware level before real flight operations. This requirement also couples with the requested flexibility of updating the models and the algorithms based on the results coming from real operations. As such, the designed architecture allows joint simulation and testing at both hardware and software layers for multiple vehicle and swarm operations. Specifically, the architecture consists of distinct and networked layers where hardware elements such as autopilot systems (e.g., Pixhawk, Ardupilot etc.), ground stations and external motion capture/localization systems (e.g., Vicon, Otus Tracker etc.) are integrated around the ROS simulation shell. In addition, the dynamics, sensor models, motion planning and other features can be driven by highly parallel MATLAB/Simulink models. Visualization and visual sensing is obtained through linking of virtual reality with simulation environments such as Gazebo and Airsim. This highly reconfigurable architecture allows research teams to work on multidisciplinary areas such as modeling, control, computer vision, artificial intelligence and machine learning within the same simulation and test environment.

The article proposes archival thinking as an analytical framework for studying Facebook. Following recent debates on data colonialism, it argues that Facebook dialectically assumes a role of a new archon of public records, while being unarchivable by design. It then puts forward counter-archiving - a practice developed to resist the epistemic hegemony of colonial archives - as a method that allows the critical study of the social media platform, after it had shut down researcher's access to public data through its application programming interface. After defining and justifying counter-archiving as a method for studying datafied platforms, two counter-archives are presented as proof of concept. The article concludes by discussing the shifting boundaries between the archivist, the activist and the scholar, as the imperative of research methods after datafication.

The future Internet is expected to support applications with quality of service (QoS) requirements. For this end several mechanisms are suggested in the IETF to support signaling, one of the most promising among them is IntServ. In this paper, we study the relationship between the QoS implementing mechanism and application demands, and make a set of an improved application interface beyond the stand RSVP API. Our goal is to provide an API friendly to applications, through extracting the key elements from the traffic parameters and reservation parameters which should be opaque to applications.

A flight is considered to be delayed when it arrives 15 or more minutes later than scheduled. Delays attributed to the National Airspace System are one of the most common type of delays. Such delays may be caused by Traffic Management Initiatives (TMI) such as Ground Stops (GS), issued at affected airports. Ground Stops are implemented to control air traffic volume to specific airports where the projected traffic demand is expected to exceed the airports' acceptance rate over a short period of time due to conditions such as inclement weather, volume constraints, closed runways, etc. Ground Stops can be considered to be the strictest Traffic Management Initiative (TMI), particularly because all flights destined to affected airports are grounded until conditions improve. Efforts have been made over the years to reduce the impact of Traffic Management Initiatives on airports and flight operations. However, these efforts have largely focused on other Traffic Management Initiatives such as Ground Delay Programs (GDP), due to their frequency and duration compared to Ground Stops. Limited work has also been carried out on Ground Stops because of the limited amount of time that traffic management personnel often have between planning and implementing Ground Stops and external factors that influence decisions of traffic management personnel. Consequently, this research primarily focuses on the prediction of weather-related Ground Stops at Newark Liberty International (EWR) and LaGuardia (LGA) airports, with the secondary goal of gaining insights into factors that influence their occurrence. It is expected that this research will provide stakeholders with further insights into factors that influence the occurrence of weather-related Ground Stops at both airports. The technical details and requirements of the Analytical Data Interchange and Storage Standards (ADISS) architecture is presented. From this architecture, the network Common Data Format (netCDF) was chosen to be the system most applicable for use by various standards group, such as the Analytical Instrument Association (AIA). The group's usage of the software framework, particularly in chromatography, led to its emergence as a defacto standard for data communications for these techniques. The capabilities of the netCDF system is described and some tools available to applies ADISS/netCDF to other analytical techniques are presented.

This study compares three selected navigation applications which are Google Maps, Waze and HERE WeGo, through the study of each application's application programming interface (API). The study is focusing on the aspect of Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) accuracy, in an attempt to determine which API are suitable to be integrated and implemented in the development of a shuttle bus application. To date, there are currently lacking studies that discuss or compare the implementation of API in the development of shuttle bus tracking and ETA application. This study focuses on finding which API is the best suitable for such development from an ETA perspective, using the navigation application where the APIs were implemented or based on as a tool of testing. An experiment was conducted in a city in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, by collecting the ETA of the navigation applications from multiple points while riding a scheduled shuttle bus. The ETA will be compared with actual arrival time (ATA) using RMSE, MAE and PE metric. Comparison results showed Google Maps app provides the most consistent ETA prediction accuracy in a conservative manner and is the most suitable to be incorporated into a simple bus tracking and ETA app. The significant contribution of this study is to provide a result of comparison of the ETA accuracy through selected navigation applications and comparison of their navigation API.

In this paper, we explore face detection and face recognition algorithms for ubiquitous computing environment. We develop algorithms for application programming interface (API) suitable for embedded system. The basic requirements include appropriate data format and collection of feature data to achieve efficiency of algorithm. Our experiment presents a face detection and face recognition algorithm for handheld devices. The essential part for proposed system includes;integer representation from floating point calculation. optimization of memory management scheme and efficient face detection performance on complex background scene.

Managing and limiting cluster resource usage is a critical task for computing clusters with a large number of users. By enforcing usage limits, cluster managers are able to ensure fair availability for all users, bill users accordingly, and prevent the abuse of cluster resources. As this is such a common problem, there are naturally many existing solutions. However, to allow for greater control over usage accounting and submission behavior in Slurm, we present a system composed of: a web API which exposes accounting data;Slurm plugins that communicate with a REST-like HTTP implementation of that API;and client tools that use it to report usage. Key advantages of our system include a customizable resource accounting formula based on job parameters, preemptive blocking of user jobs at submission time, project-level and user-level resource limits, and support for the development of other web and command-line clients that query the extensible web API. We deployed this system on Berkeley Research Computing's institutional cluster, Savio, allowing us to automatically collect and store accounting data, and thereby easily enforce our cluster usage policy.

Despite great advances in the area of Semantic Web, industry rather seldom adopts Semantic Web technologies and their storage and query approaches. Instead, relational databases (RDB) are often deployed to store business-critical data, which are accessed via REST interfaces. Yet, some enterprises would greatly benefit from Semantic Web related datasets which are usually represented with the Resource Description Framework (RDF). To bridge this technology gap, we propose a fully automatic approach that generates suitable RDB models with REST APIs to access them. In our evaluation, generated databases from different RDF datasets are examined and compared. Our findings show that the databases sufficiently reflect their counterparts while the API is able to reproduce rather simple SPARQL queries. Potentials for improvements are identified, for example, the reduction of data redundancies in generated databases.

The ARINC-653 standard architecture for flight software specifies an application executive (APEX) which provides an application programming interface and defines a hierarchical framework which provides health management for error detection and recovery. In every partition of the architecture, however, asynchronously concurrent processes or threads may include concurrency bugs such as unintended race conditions which are common and difficult to remove by testing. A race condition toward a shared data, or data race, is a pair of unsynchronized instructions that access a shared variable with at least one write access. Data races threaten the reliability of shared-memory programs seriously and latently, because they result in unintended nondeterministic executions of the programs. To heal data race during executions of ARINC-653 flight software, this paper instruments on-the-fly race detection into the target program and incorporates on-the-fly race healing into the health management of the ARINC-653 architecture. The race detection signals to the health monitor using the corresponding APEX call, if a data race is detected. The health monitor then responds by invoking an aperiodic, user-defined, error handling process that is assigned the highest possible priority. This special process uses an APEX call to identify and then heals the occurrence of race condition as an application error, one of seven error types defined by ARINC-653. This race-healing process allows the target programs to be assured at run-time that the execution result of the healed program could have been in the original program and therefore no new functional bug has been introduced. This paper evaluates efficiencies of the on-the-fly mechanisms to argue that they are practical to be configured under the ARINC-653 partitions.
