Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) is a cloud technology that places storage and computing resources at the edge of the mobile network. The MEC platform provides services for radio network information, bandwidth management and device location. In this paper, we propose a new mobile edge service that enables 3rd party control on intersystem handover. The proposed service allows authorized applications to initiate device pre-registration in the target access network and then based on application-specific policy to initiate intersystem handover. Description of information flows, data models and actual interface definition are provided. Handover state models consider some implementation issues.

Mobile applications used in smartphones are increasingly using Open APIs, and the trend is likely to continue in the foreseeable future. However, the performance of the Open APIs integrated in smartphone apps (Mobile Open APIs) remains hidden from app developers and app users because of the lack of a method to isolate the Open API calls from the whole app execution process. In this paper, we present the very first effort on characterizing Mobile Open APIs and analyzing their performance in terms of four metrics: response latency, network traffic, energy consumption, and CPU usage. We first develop APIExtractor (APIX), a software tool to extract the Mobile Open API calls as fine-grained as in the function level from Android app files (.apk). Then the popularity of the Open API functions were ranked by running APIX on 200 top popular apps downloaded from the Android app store. We then perform in-depth case studies on the the top 17 most popular Mobile Open APIs, by wrapping each of them in a specifically designed app (called APISymphone) and test the apps on both Wi-Fi and cellular network. Furthermore, we conduct a global scale measurements of the Mobile Open APIs by using Amazon Elastic Computing service. Our comprehensive measurement-based results provides very intriguing as well as interesting insights to the performance characteristics of Mobile APIs.

To track, control, and compel reuse of web APIs, we investigate a new approach to API governance - combined policy, implementation, and deployment control of web APIs. Our approach, called EAGER, provides a software architecture that integrates into PaaS platforms to support systemwide, deployment-time enforcement of governance policies. Specifically, EAGER checks for and prevents backward incompatible API changes from being deployed into production PaaS clouds, enforces service reuse, and facilitates enforcement of other best practices in software maintenance via policies. Our experiments with an EAGER prototype show that enforcing API governance at deployment-time in PaaS clouds is efficient and scalable to thousands of APIs and policies.

Natural language processing (NLP) is the branch of Artificial Intelligence that is concerned with enabling computers understand human languages. Implementing new NLP tools that effectively and efficiently process Arabic is not an easy task, usually such tools face challenges related to NLP various tasks, However, with the movement of many NLP companies to provide their NLP services via Web APIs, building NLP systems that can benefit from such APIs is becoming a reality. This paper will explore the available NLP Web APIs that supports Arabic language. It will also discuss their strengths and weaknesses and provide suggestion for future use.

Whilst robots are increasingly being deployed as social agents, it is still difficult to program them to interact socially. This is because current programming tools either require programmers to work at a low level or lack features needed to create certain aspects of social interaction. High level, domain specific tools with features designed specifically to meet the requirements of social interaction have the potential to ease the creation of social applications. We present a domain specific application programming interface (API) that is designed to meet the requirements of social interaction. The Cognitive Dimensions Framework was used as a design tool during the design process and the API was validated by implementing an exemplar application. The evaluation of the API showed that programmers with no robotics knowledge were positively impressed by the notation and that its organization, domain specific interfaces and object oriented nature positively affected several Cognitive Dimensions.

The ARINC-653 standard architecture for flight software specifies an application executive (APEX) which provides an application programming interface and defines a hierarchical framework which provides health management for error detection and recovery. In every partition of the architecture, however, processes may have to deal with asynchronous real-time signals from peripheral devices or may communicate with other processes through blackboards or buffers. This configuration may lead programs into concurrency faults such as unintended race conditions which are common and difficult to be removed by testing. Unfortunately, existing tools for reporting concurrency faults in applications that use concurrent signal handlers can neither represent the complex interactions between an ARINC-653 application and its error handlers nor provide effective means for understanding the dynamic behavior of concurrent signal handlers involved into data races. Thus, this paper presents an intuitive tool that visualizes the partial ordering of runtime events to detect concurrency faults in an ARINC-653 application that uses concurrent signal handlers. It uses vertically parallel arrows with different colors to capture the logical concurrency between the application, its error handlers and concurrent signal handlers, and materializes synchronization operations with differently colored horizontal arrows. Our visualization tool allows at a glance, to visually detect data races and provides a great understanding of the program internal for an easy debugging process.

GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) has a great impact on computing field. To enhance the performance of computing systems, researchers and developers use the parallel computing architecture of GPU. On the other hand, to reduce the development time of new products, two programming models are included in GPU, which are OpenCL (Open Computing Language) and CUDA (Compute Unified Device Architecture). The benefit of involving the two programming models in GPU is that researchers and developers don't have to understand OpenGL, DirectX or other program design, but can use GPU through simple programming language. OpenCL is an open standard API, which has the advantage of cross-platform. CUDA is a parallel computer architecture developed by NVIDIA, which includes Runtime API and Driver API. Compared with OpenCL, CUDA is with better performance. In this paper, we used plenty of similar kernels to compare the computing performance of C, OpenCL and CUDA, the two kinds of API's on NVIDIA Quadro 4000 GPU. The experimental result showed that, the executive time of CUDA Driver API was 94.9%similar to 99.0% faster than that of C, while and the executive time of CUDA Driver API was 3.8%similar to 5.4% faster than that of OpenCL. Accordingly, the cross-platform characteristic of OpenCL did not affect the performance of GPU.

Location based services (LBS) are considered very relevant lot the users of mobile networks. All local events and facts related to area nearby seem to be more important that others which happen in remote places. Localization data is used in all types of services: weather, traffic, tourist info, etc. One of its most important (and regulated by law) applications is providing persons location in case of emergency. This paper presents results of field tests related to assessment of accuracy of two most commonly used localization methods: Cell-Id and W3C Geo localization. The tests were conducted in the form of test drives along some of the most important roads in Poland. Position of the test vehicle obtained using analyzed methods was logged and compred to localization obtained from the Global Positioning System (GPS). Data collected during test drives was processed and statistical information about localization accuracy was calculated. Results obtained for different methods were compared and conclusions about localization quality are pro ided. The paper also describes test environment and data model which were used during work being reported.
