In recent years, Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks (VANETs) have become a very active research field. Since real-world experiments might involve potentially costly and complex hardware installations, simulations are a widely used alternative. However, due to, e.g., different scopes of functionality of available VANET simulators, simulations of VANET applications yield different results when using different simulators. Thus, it would be beneficial to test a VANET application in multiple simulation environments. Unfortunately, VANET applications are typically implemented inside of a certain simulator. Hence, to switch the simulator, the source code of the application has to be adapted. To solve this problem, we developed a VANET API which defines the structure and interfaces of crucial VANET components to make them accessible in a unified way. We further developed VANET Simulation Runtime (VaSili), a framework which allows executing VANET API-compliant VANET applications in different VANET simulators without modification. Hence, applications developed using our proposed API can be run in different simulation environments and, since the VANET API is independent of VaSili, on real hardware.

We study the problem of Entity Resolution (ER) with limited information. ER is the problem of identifying and merging records that represent the same real-world entity. In this paper, we focus on the resolution of a single node g from one social graph (Google+ in our case) against a second social graph (Twitter in our case). We want to find the best match for g in Twitter, by dynamically probing the Twitter graph (using a public API), limited by the number of API calls that social systems allow. We propose two strategies that are designed for limited information and can be adapted to different limits. We evaluate our strategies against a naive one on a real dataset and show that our strategies can provide improved accuracy with significantly fewer API calls.

The number of networked smart devices available in everyday environments is rapidly increasing;however, many current devices adopt mutually incompatible networks, protocols, and application programming interfaces. As such, creating mobile applications that dynamically discover and integrate ambient functionality across multiple vertical markets remains challenging. In this paper, we introduce a novel middleware framework, called Ambient Control, which enables commodity mobile devices (e.g., smart-phones) to dynamically mediate control messaging between incompatible smart devices situated in the user's environment. Ambient Control enables a variety of control capabilities and protocol translation services to be dynamically installed into a user's mobile device on-demand using plug-ins. The approach also features an intuitive "Tap to Interact" workflow that allows a user to tap nearby smart devices with a smart-phone to install required interaction plug-ins and automatically "wire" them together in interesting and potentially unforeseen ways. In this paper, we present a detailed overview of the Ambient Control framework, introduce our fully functional prototype, and present an evaluation indicating that the prototype provides efficient messaging performance and imposes low processing and memory overhead, making it suitable for deployment on many commodity mobile devices.

FPGAs enable NoC architecture experimentation, although to be effective they need to be supported by tools and frameworks for construction of the NoC and effective software programming of the NoC. In this paper, we focus upon effective programming of the NoC using Java, complementing previous work which proposes the Blueshell framework for NoC generation for FPGAs. The approach taken is called Network-Chi, providing a number of key extensions to the Chi Java compiler. This includes provision of a networking API within Java giving a mesh based abstraction for network communication, allowing the programmer to send Java objects to other nodes without consideration for the underlying hardware topology or protocols;and a region-based memory management API that enables the definition of transient allocation contexts that discard all objects allocated within them when they reach the end of execution. Results show the approach taken to be efficient and effective.

Employing software timestamps is an effective solution for clock synchronization for networks which are already well established, and cannot be replaced at once by devices supporting hardware timestamps. The synchronization performance, on the other hand, with software timestamps is very low when compared with hardware timestamping-based solutions. This work proposes a novel approach to improve the performance of synchronization with software timestamps by enhancing the networking devices with low-cost external timestampers which can accurately timestamp interrupt signals marking the arrival or departure of a packet. The initial experimental results indicate that this approach considerably improves the end-to-end synchronization performance, and it is possible to bring synchronization accuracy from microsecond to nanosecond range. However, timestamping the interrupt signal does not give the correct egress or ingress timestamp for network cards which employ interrupt coalescence. To this end, this work provides experimental results presenting the impact of interrupt coalescent on synchronization.

The growth in scientific data volumes has resulted in the need for new tools that enable users to operate on and analyze data on large-scale resources. In the last decade, a number of scientific workflow tools have emerged. These tools often target distributed environments, and often need expert help to compose and execute the workflows. Data-intensive workflows are often ad-hoc;they involve an iterative development process that includes users composing and testing their workflows on desktops, and scaling up to larger systems. In this paper, we present the design and implementation of Tigres, a workflow library that supports the iterative workflow development cycle of data-intensive workflows. Tigres provides an application programming interface to a set of programming templates i.e., sequence, parallel, split, merge, that can be used to compose and execute computational and data pipelines. We discuss the results of our evaluation of scientific and synthetic workflows showing Tigres performs with minimal template overheads (mean of 13 seconds over all experiments). We also discuss various factors (e.g., I/O performance, execution mechansims) that affect the performance of scientific workflows on HPC systems.

This paper deals with obtaining the meteorological data (temperature, wind speed, wind direction, clouds coverage, sun rise, sun set) from the internet weather servers through free weather API functions in XML format. Together with stored operational data (traffic intensity, traffic speed, opacity, CO level...) from the existing tunnel are this data sent into the PLC based tunnel simulator through external XML interface using C# application.

The article investigates the importance of personal names in conveying information about a character's identity and role in ancient Egyptian fiction. Particular attention is paid to the names 'Naneferkaptah,' 'Ihweret,' and 'Tabubue,' as the principal antagonists of Setne Khaemwas in 'First Tale of the Setne Khaemwas,' an early-Ptolemaic Demotic. The female characters Ihwert and Tabubue are discussed as reflections of two different aspects of the goddess Isis. The name of Naneferkaptah is linked to the divine bull Apis.

As Internet of Things (IoT) technology becomes more widespread and commonplace in homes, the efficiency of these devices using available bandwidth is becoming more of a concern, as the number of connected devices in a home increase drastically. If each device is controlled using a separate application programming Interface (API), the strain on a network will be much worse than it would if all these devices are controlled from a single point. This single point could handle all commands to and from the devices, thereby decreasing the network load. The framework of a testbed presented in this paper will allow developers to build an API around the devices included in the testbed. Then test their algorithms and other research methods from a remote location.
