Nowadays, colossal amount of information is produced by computational systems and electronic instruments such as telescopes, medical devices and so on. To explore these petabytes of data, new fast algorithms must be discovered or old ones may be redesigned. One of the most popular and useful techniques in order to discover and extract information from data pools is clustering, and k-means is an algorithm which clusters data according its characteristics. Its main disadvantage is its computational complexity which makes the technique very difficult to apply on big data sets. Although k-means is a very well studied technique, a fully parallel version of it has not been explored yet. In this work, a parallel version of the k-means is presented for 1-d objects. The experimental results obtained are inline with the theoretical outcome and prove both the correctness and the effectiveness of the technique.

Key program interfaces are sometimes documented with usage examples: concrete code snippets that characterize common use cases for a particular data type. While such documentation is known to be of great utility, it is burdensome to create and can be incomplete, out of date, or not representative of actual practice. We present an automatic technique for mining and synthesizing succinct and representative human-readable documentation of program interfaces. Our algorithm is based on a combination of path sensitive dataflow analysis, clustering, and pattern abstraction. It produces output in the form of well-typed program snippets which document initialization, method calls, assignments, looping constructs, and exception handling. In a human study involving over 150 participants, 82% of our generated examples were found to be at least as good at human-written instances and 94% were strictly preferred to state of the art code search.

Written discourse produced on Nukulaelae atoll of Western Polynesia falls principally in two categories: personal letters and religious sermons. Personal-letter writing is a highly affective communicative context, in which the vulnerable aspects of the person are highlighted. Sermons, in contrast, elaborate authoritarianism and directness. The divergent characteristics of Nukulaelae literacy practices are best understood in terms of their relationship to contexts of use, particularly to the notion of person articulated through them.

The purpose of this paper is describing a semantics-driven approach to the automatic segmentation of song lyrics. The proposed algorithm takes into account the basic formatting commonly in use for lyrics on CD booklets and specialized Web sites, in order to extract basic semantic information, such as the organization in lines and sections. Then the algorithm applies simple rules to reconstruct lyrics structure, supporting tolerance margins as regards possible errors and encoding variants. The output is a sequence of sections labelled according to the similarity of their contents. The resulting segmenter is publicly available as a set of methods exposed via a Web application programming interface (API).

Several approaches have been proposed for cosimulation between QEMU and SystemC. On the contrary, no paper addresses integration between Open Virtual Platform (OVP) and SystemC. Indeed, OVP models and the related simulator can be integrated into SystemC designs by using TLM 2.0 wrappers and opportune OVP APIs. However, this solution presents some disadvantages, like the incapability of supporting cycle-accurate models, and the necessity of re-design, in terms of SystemC modules, all OVP components that should be integrated in the target platform. To avoid such drawbacks, and provide an easy way to port SystemC models from a QEMU-based to an OVP-based virtual platform and vice versa, this paper presents a common co-simulation approach that works for integrating SystemC components with both QEMU and OVP.

Multi-access edge computing (MEC) exposes network capabilities and information closer to end users and enables latency sensitive applications. Standardized MEC Location service provides location related information to authorized edge applications which may benefit from active device location tracking and awareness. The paper studies implementation issues of MEC Location service in fifth generation networks, including location service models and performance evaluation of service interfaces.

Library developers who have to evolve a library to accommodate changing requirements often face a dilemma: Either they implement a clean, efficient solution but risk breaking client code, or they maintain compatibility with client code, but pay with increased design complexity and thus higher maintenance costs over time. We address this dilemma by presenting a lightweight approach for evolving application programming interfaces (APIs), which does not depend on version control or configuration management systems. Instead, we capture API refactoring actions as a developer evolves an API. Users of the API can then replay the refactorings to bring their client software components up to date. We present CATCHUP!, an implementation of our approach that captures and replays refactoring actions within an integrated development environment semi- automatically. Our experiments suggest that our approach could be valuable in practice.

This paper presents Unified Communication X (UCX), a set of network APIs and their implementations for high throughput computing. UCX comes from the combined effort of national laboratories, industry, and academia to design and implement a high-performing and highly-scalable network stack for next generation applications and systems. UCX design provides the ability to tailor its APIs and network functionality to suit a wide variety of application domains and hardware. We envision these APIs to satisfy the networking needs of many programming models such as Message Passing Interface (MPI), OpenSHMEM, Partitioned Global Address Space (PGAS) languages, task-based paradigms and I/O bound applications. To evaluate the design we implement the APIs and protocols, and measure the performance of overhead-critical network primitives fundamental for implementing many parallel programming models and system libraries. Our results show that the latency, bandwidth, and message rate achieved by the portable UCX prototype is very close to that of the underlying driver. With UCX, we achieved a message exchange latency of 0.89 us, a bandwidth of 6138.5 MB/s, and a message rate of 14 million messages per second. As far as we know, this is the highest bandwidth and message rate achieved by any network stack (publicly known) on this hardware.

Modern software uses frameworks through their application programming interfaces (APIs). Framework APIs may change while frameworks evolve. Client programs have to upgrade to new releases of frameworks if security vulnerabilities are discovered in the used releases. Patching security vulnerabilities can be delayed by non-security-related API changes when the frameworks used by client programs are not up to date. Keeping frameworks updated can reduce the reaction time to patch security leaks. Client program upgrades are not cost-free, developers need to understand the API usages in client programs and API changes between framework releases before conduct upgrading tasks. In this paper, we propose a tool ACUA to generate reports containing detailed API change and usage information by analyzing the binary code of both frameworks and clients programs written in Java. Developers can use the API change and usage reports generated by ACUA to estimate the work load and decide when to starting upgrading client programs based on the estimation.
