Digital engineering frameworks have become popular in the aerospace industry for addressing problems that require extensive cross-disciplinary collaboration. This work will demonstrate a new framework for automating the exchange of design information between disciplines using a unified set of Digital Twin Modeling Instructions (DTMI). DTMI is a standard syntax for describing systems or components in human-readable language. The instructions include a description of the geometry and material of the structure, as well as environments in which the system will operate. These instructions serve as the authoritative source of truth for the design. A compiler is used to interpret the DTMI and generate a database representation of the design. CAD and subdiscipline models can then be automatically created using model rendering engines, which leverage APIs to communicate with discipline-specific software tools. Digital manufacturing instructions are currently used to automate additive manufacturing with robotics. The DTMI workflow extends this concept to automate the generation of a digital twin for design and analysis. The result is a modular digital engineering framework that can assess the effect of design changes across disciplines with minimal user effort, facilitating rapid model updates and version control. This manuscript will discuss the current state of development and demonstrate the use of a additive manufacturing process model rendering engine.

A supervised deep learning approach is coupled with heuristic convergence criteria to construct a classification model for detecting the completion (convergence) of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. Heuristic convergence criteria alone are not always sufficient and more complex decisions are often left to a human analyst. The proposed approach leverages heuristic convergence criteria as well as two deep neural network (DNN) models, one binary and one multi-class, to improve the efficiency and consistency of convergence classification across a wide range of flight regimes. The DNN models presented are each trained on a subset of ascent aerodynamic CFD simulations for NASA's Space Launch System and were produced using NASA's unstructured Navier-Stokes solver FUN3D. Individual solutions are analyzed intermittently and are classified as sufficiently converged, further iterations required, or switch from steady Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) to unsteady RANS CFD based on the iterative histories of four aerodynamic coefficients. The implemented classification model is shown to produce solutions that closely correlate to solutions produced by a human analyst. This work lays groundwork for expanding the capabilities of DNNs for automating and improving more of the CFD process.

Hannibal at the gates: Cyberwarfare & the Solarwinds sunburst hack

The connected world economy, compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic, has forced countries, companies, and organizations to pivot to digitally transforming their operations. Sophisticated, state-sponsored perpetrators have seized this forced pivot to lay the groundwork for Cyberwarfare with Advanced Persistent Threats. Using the 2020 Solarwinds Orion Sunburst hack campaign, this research uses a grounded case study approach to highlight the facets of the Sunburst cyberwarfare campaign. Findings suggest that cyberwarfare underscores the need for revisiting organizational processes, culture, and paradigms that are capitalized and leveraged by state-sponsored perpetrators. The Sunburst hack prompted organizations to immediately assume technical solutions. Among them, organizations were quick to isolate infected assets and patch infected systems. However, this research argues that such a reactive technical fix is a vicious trend based on a “wait, watch, react” ideology. Instead, there is prima facie need for process reengineering organizational operations and cultures to build and maintain preventive readiness. © Association for Information Technology Trust 2021.

The paper describes the development of information technologies for distributed storage of data of instrumental observation networks created by the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (FEB RAS). The prime goal of the distributed storage design is to process a large amount of real-time seismological data and provide fast and secure access using a cloud storage platform based on OpenStack Swift. On its basis, the allocation of the corresponding data storage has been done. The interaction with storage using existing application software as well as an assessment of the effectiveness of the solution is described.

Computer technology has made amazing advances in the past few decades;however, the software documentation of today still looks strikingly similar to the software documentation used 30 years ago. If this continues into the 21st century, more and more software developers could be using 20th-century-style documentation to solve 21st-century problems with 21st-century technologies. Is 20th-century-style documentation up to the challenge? How can that be measured? This paper seeks to answer those questions by developing a heuristic to identify whether the documentation set for an application programming interface (API) contains the key elements of API reference documentation that help software developers learn an API. The resulting heuristic was tested on a collection of software documentation that was chosen to provide a diverse set of examples with which to validate the heuristic. In the course of testing the heuristic, interesting patterns in the API documentation were observed. For example, twenty-five percent of the documentation sets studied did not have any overview information, which, according to studies, is one of the most basic elements an API documentation set needs to help software developers learn to use the API. The heuristic produced by this research can be used to evaluate large sets of API documentation, track trends in API documentation, and facilitate additional research.

Our objective was to enable an end-user to create complex queries to drug information sources through functional composition, by creating sequences of functions from application program interfaces (API) to drug terminologies. The development of a functional composition model seeks to link functions from two distinct APIs. An ontology was developed using Prot g to model the functions of the RxNorm and NDF-RT APIs by describing the semantics of their input and output. A set of rules were developed to define the interoperable conditions for functional composition. The operational definition of interoperability between function pairs is established by executing the rules on the ontology. We illustrate that the functional composition model supports common use cases, including checking interactions for RxNorm drugs and deploying allergy lists defined in reference to drug properties in NDF-RT. This model supports the RxMix application (http://***/RxMix/), an application we developed for enabling complex queries to the RxNorm and NDF-RT APIs.

Truly predictive numerical simulations can only be obtained by performing Uncertainty Quantification. However, many realistic engineering applications require extremely complex and computationally expensive high-fidelity numerical simulations for their accurate performance characterization. Very often the combination of complex physical models and extreme operative conditions can easily lead to hundreds of uncertain parameters that need to be propagated through high-fidelity codes. Under these circumstances, a single fidelity uncertainty quantification approach, i.e. a workflow that only uses high-fidelity simulations, is unfeasible due to its prohibitive overall computational cost. To overcome this difficulty, in recent years multifidelity strategies emerged and gained popularity. Their core idea is to combine simulations with varying levels of fidelity/accuracy in order to obtain estimators or surrogates that can yield the same accuracy of their single fidelity counterparts at a much lower computational cost. This goal is usually accomplished by defining a priori a sequence of discretization levels or physical modeling assumptions that can be used to decrease the complexity of a numerical model realization and thus its computational cost. Less attention has been dedicated to low-fidelity models that can be built directly from a small number of available high-fidelity simulations. In this work we focus our attention on reduced order models (ROMs). Our main goal in this work is to investigate the combination of multifidelity uncertainty quantification and ROMs in order to evaluate the possibility to obtain an efficient framework for propagating uncertainties through expensive numerical codes. This paper illustrates the capabilities of the GEMS (a Generic Engine for MDO Scenarios) Multidisciplinary Design Optimization software library, on three MDO use cases. A range of aircraft MDO applications are covered, showing the versatility of GEMS, both in terms of problems that can be addressed, and type of users, from academic to industrial ones. The focus is made on how the framework concepts allow to set up the MDO processes in an automatic and versatile way. The first use case is a series of trade-offs and MDO processes for high-fidelity aerodynamics-structure-OAD (Overall Aircraft Design) industrial engine pylon design, which is the main application of the IRT Saint Exupery MDA-MDO project. The second use case, consists in two multi-level MDO formulations that are developed to address mixed categorical and continuous structural optimization problems. In the third use case, an algorithmic framework is developed to perform multi-fidelity adjoint-based aerodynamic shape optimization, aiming at decreasing the restitution time compared to mono-fidelity approaches.

Network cameras have been growing rapidly in recent years. Thousands of public network cameras provide tremendous amount of visual information about the environment. There is a need to analyze this valuable information for a better understanding of the world around us. This paper presents an interactive web-based system that enables users to execute image analysis and computer vision techniques on a large scale to analyze the data from more than 65,000 worldwide cameras. This paper focuses on how to use both the system's website and application programming interface (API). Given a computer program that analyzes a single frame, the user needs to make only slight changes to the existing program and choose the cameras to analyze. The system handles the heterogeneity of the geographically distributed cameras, e.g. different brands, resolutions. The system allocates and manages Amazon EC2 and Windows Azure cloud resources to meet the analysis requirements.

Modern software development often involves the use of complex, reusable components called application programming interfaces (APIs). Developers use APIs to complete tasks they could not otherwise accomplish in a reasonable time. These components are now vital to mainstream software development. But as APIs have become more important, understanding how to make them more usable is becoming a significant research question. To assess the current state of research in the field, we conducted a systematic mapping. A total of 28 papers were reviewed and categorized based on their research type and on the evaluation method employed by its authors. We extended the analysis of a subset of the papers we reviewed beyond the usual limits of a systematic map in order to more closely examine details of their evaluations - such as their structure and validity and to summarize their recommendations. Based on these results, common problems in the field are discussed and future research directions are suggested.
