Development of a Support Tool for Rapid application Integration of CIMS

Computer intergrated manufacturing system (CIMS) applications in manufacturing enterprises need new advanced support tools for application integration. This paper presents the system architecture and functions for CIMS application integration platform for manufacturing enterprises (MACIP). MACIP integrates a set of application software products and development tools as a complete system for CIMS implementation. MACIP includes a communication system, a global information system, three domain application sub integration platforms, an internet interface and an operation management and control system. The Client/Server structure, the object oriented method and the agent technique were used in developing MACIP. Good system openness, scalability, and maintenance are ensured by conforming to international standards and by using advanced system design software and management tools. MACIP can significantly reduce the implementation complexity, time, and cost of CIMS. 

JDap: Supporting in-memory data persistence in javascript using Intel's PMDK

Data persistence is a feature that the data needs to live longer than its creator. The state-of-the-art is in-memory data persistence, requiring data in the memory to be persistent even when the application crashes. So far in-memory data persistence has been supported in many programming languages such as C, C++, and Java. However, it has not yet been well supported in JavaScript, a popular scripting language for software development. To solve this problem, we introduce JDap, an extension to JavaScript's runtime and execution engine, to support in-memory data persistence in JavaScript using Intel's Persistent Memory Development Kit (PMDK). JDap consists of (1) a JavaScript persistent object pool that serves as a heap in which persistent objects can be created, managed, and accessed safely and consistently. In particular, this pool supports shared memory parallelism, allowing persistent data to be accessed in parallel;(2) a set of JavaScript APIs that provides programmers with supports in managing and accessing persistent data in an easy-to-use and safe manner. We have implemented JDap and evaluated it against two database-supported data persistence styles (MongoDB's object store and indexedDB's binary store) on micro-benchmarks and real-world applications. Our evaluation shows that JDap outperforms object store by 1.6 x and outperforms binary store by 24.6 x. We have also evaluated JDap against Extended Memory Semantics (EMS) on data-intensive tasks. The results show that JDap outperforms EMS by 2 x.

Benchmarking Analysis and Characterization of Hypervisors for Space Multicore Systems

Multicore systems are becoming widely diffused in the space domain, mainly because of the opportunities to improve performance and, at the same time, to optimize orthogonal metrics (e.g., cost, power consumption). However, the need to consider safety integrity levels, dictated by the relevant standards (i.e., ECSS-Q-ST-80C, ECSSQ-ST-30, ECSSQ-ST-40C, NPD 8700.1E, NPR 8715.3D, JMR-001, OST 134-1021-99), into space applications adds further challenges. In fact, in a multicore system, multiple processing cores share various resources;therefore, the implementation of modern and complex integrated modular avionics systems is problematic. Actually, integrated modular avionics systems are inherently mixed-critical ones where spatial and temporal isolation in the shared resources access is essential. As a way to mitigate such a problem, the exploitation of virtualization technologies allows to guarantee isolation and certification requirements but, at the same time, introduces scheduling overhead and new issues. The selection of the best virtualization technology is just one part of the solution. Then, further benchmarking and validation activities should help developers to certify virtualized environments running on multicore architectures. In such a context, this work proposes a methodology for characterization of hypervisor technologies in the space domain. Experimental results obtained by applying the proposed methodology in order to characterize some reference hypervisors features close the paper.

Flexible 3D Model Partitioning System for nD-Based BIM Implementation of Alignment-Based Civil Infrastructure

Three-dimensional (3D) building information modeling (BIM) models of alignment-based civil infrastructures such as roads, railways, and tunnels are built as an integrated surface model for each planned linear segment. In the multidimensional (nD) form of BIM, the model can be linked with information such as quantity, schedule, and cost. Furthermore, even if the nD form of BIM is fulfilled, the design and linked information are changed;subsequently, not only must the BIM model be re-created but each link to the information must be updated. In this study, a system was developed to partition the 3D BIM model according to the level required by the user. A partition interval allows the user to input the start and end points or to set a constant interval unit on the basis of the design baseline. In addition, each segment of the partitioned BIM model can be equipped with information such as earthwork volume (cut and fill), cost, and schedule. Finally, a case study was conducted using a road BIM model to verify the developed system.

A Virtual Power Plant Solution for Aggregating Photovoltaic Systems and Other Distributed Energy Resources for Northern European Primary Frequency Reserves

Primary frequency reserves in Northern Europe have traditionally been provided with hydro plants and fossil fuel-burning spinning reserves. Recently, smart distributed energy resources have been equipped with functionality needed to participate on frequency reserves. Key categories of such resources include photovoltaic systems, batteries, and smart loads. Most of these resources are small and cannot provide the minimum controllable power required to participate on frequency reserves. Thus, virtual power plants have been used to aggregate the resources and trade them on the frequency reserves markets. The information technology aspects of virtual power plants are proprietary and many of the details have not been made public. The first contribution of this article is to propose a generic data model and application programming interface for a virtual power plant with the above-mentioned capabilities. The second contribution is to use the application programming interface to cope with the unpredictability of the frequency reserve capacity that the photovoltaic systems and other distributed energy resources are able to provide to the frequency reserves markets in the upcoming bidding period. The contributions are demonstrated with an operational virtual power plant installation at a Northern European shopping center, aggregating photovoltaic Primary Frequency Reserves resources.

Easy to integrate API for accessing true random numbers generated with IDQ's Quantis Appliance

Generating quality random numbers is essential for many computer applications, from preserving data privacy through cryptography and federated learning to artificial intelligence and machine learning. The role of random numbers in such applications is to add the necessary entropy to produce secure keys that protect data, to select data for training and testing machine learning models, or to improve the efficiency of solution space searches in evolutionary algorithms and heuristic methods. The available software methods can only generate pseudo-random numbers, while conventional hardware methods extract randomness from the environment, and these physical processes possess specific self-similar patterns. In contrast, quantum random number generators (QRNGs) produce truly random numbers by exploiting the randomness of quantum state measurement. Software platforms that provide random numbers over the cloud, rendered with network- attached quantum random number generator devices, exist;however, they were not developed as a native C language solution for embedded applications. Therefore, we introduce libqrng, written in C, which offers access to IDQ's Quantis Appliance high-quality random numbers through an easy-to-integrate API for embedded and distributed computing applications that requires randomness and an interface for using the library from different programming languages (e.g., Python).

Identifier mapping performance for integrating transcriptomics and proteomics experimental results

Background: Studies integrating transcriptomic data with proteomic data can illuminate the proteome more clearly than either separately. Integromic studies can deepen understanding of the dynamic complex regulatory relationship between the transcriptome and the proteome. Integrating these data dictates a reliable mapping between the identifier nomenclature resultant from the two high-throughput platforms. However, this kind of analysis is well known to be hampered by lack of standardization of identifier nomenclature among proteins, genes, and microarray probe sets. Therefore data integration may also play a role in critiquing the fallible gene identifications that both platforms emit. Results: We compared three freely available internet-based identifier mapping resources for mapping UniProt accessions (ACCs) to Affymetrix probesets identifications (IDs): DAVID, EnVision, and NetAffx. Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry analyses of 91 endometrial cancer and 7 noncancer samples generated 11,879 distinct ACCs. For each ACC, we compared the retrieval sets of probeset IDs from each mapping resource. We confirmed a high level of discrepancy among the mapping resources. On the same samples, mRNA expression was available. Therefore, to evaluate the quality of each ACC-to-probeset match, we calculated proteome-transcriptome correlations, and compared the resources presuming that better mapping of identifiers should generate a higher proportion of mapped pairs with strong inter-platform correlations. A mixture model for the correlations fitted well and supported regression analysis, providing a window into the performance of the mapping resources. The resources have added and dropped matches over two years, but their overall performance has not changed. Conclusions: The methods presented here serve to achieve concrete context-specific insight, to support well-informed decisions in choosing an ID mapping strategy for "omic" data merging.

Bio::NEXUS:: a Perl API for the NEXUS format for comparative biological data

Background Evolutionary analysis provides a formal framework for comparative analysis of genomic and other data. In evolutionary analysis, observed data are treated as the terminal states of characters that have evolved (via transitions between states) along the branches of a tree. The NEXUS standard of Maddison, et al. (1997; Syst. Biol. 46: 590–621) provides a portable, expressive and flexible text format for representing character-state data and trees. However, due to its complexity, NEXUS is not well supported by software and is not easily accessible to bioinformatics users and developers. Results Bio::NEXUS is an application programming interface (API) implemented in Perl, available from CPAN and SourceForge. The 22 Bio::NEXUS modules define 351 methods in 4229 lines of code, with 2706 lines of POD (Plain Old Documentation). Bio::NEXUS provides an object-oriented interface to reading, writing and manipulating the contents of NEXUS files. It closely follows the extensive explanation of the NEXUS format provided by Maddison et al., supplemented with a few extensions such as support for the NHX (New Hampshire Extended) tree format. Conclusion In spite of some limitations owing to the complexity of NEXUS files and the lack of a formal grammar, NEXUS will continue to be useful for years to come. Bio::NEXUS provides a user-friendly API for NEXUS supplemented with an extensive set of methods for manipulations such as re-rooting trees and selecting subsets of data. Bio::NEXUS can be used as glue code for connecting existing software that uses NEXUS, or as a framework for new applications.

Enhancing whole building life cycle assessment through building information modelling: Principles and best practices

The building physics research community is facing a challenge in evaluating the sustainability of modern buildings using digital tools and methods. Achieving carbon neutrality, the primary objective of the building industry, requires incorporating Industry 4.0 tools into current building evaluation procedures. To address this need, this research presents an application programming interface (API) designed to facilitate Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for entire buildings using information from Building Information Modelling (BIM) files. The study outlines the steps involved in developing a BIM-LCA API, including code development and validation with commercial software. The research identifies challenges in creating a uniform database platform for BIM-LCA, and the need for region-specific databases to provide automated material classification for measuring potential environmental consequences. The study also emphasizes the importance of establishing market-level sustainability standards through the development of relevant tools, training techniques, and procedures, and the need for national rating systems to align with these standards to achieve European climate adaptation and circularity goals. The assessment also identifies future challenges in the field and highlights the expected role of the European Union (EU) Level(s) sustainability scheme.

Conducting smart energy audits of buildings with the use of building information modelling

Energy audits are an integral part of the overall energy savings strategy in the building sector. The significance of energy audits was confirmed both by their adoption by the European Energy Savings Directive (2012/27) as well as by the development and issuance of a large number of European standards (standard series EN16247, EN 15378, EN 16798, EN 16946, EN 16947 etc.), related to the energy audit of buildings and building systems. However, current practices for conducting energy audits in buildings do not adopt the latest developments in the field of Industry 4.0 practices, resulting in the general belief within the engineering community of building physics that energy auditing can be further updated and improved. This work aims to introduce a novel approach for the improvement of existing building energy audit practices with the adaptation of building information models and associated data. The study presents the potential of evaluation process utilizing building information models for constituent energy audit procedure - assessment of building energy consumption related to building envelope. The question of whether there is room for further adoption of digitization practices in carrying out energy audits, as well as the possibilities of developing new tools in this area are addressed. Following this, the main outcome of this study is the overview and analysis of Industry Foundation Classes schema building information model data structure and its interrelationships with the aim of using the extracted information to digitize energy audit procedures. Research approach covers digitization of building energy consumption assessment influenced by building envelope characteristics, as well as evaluation of economic and energy aspects for possible building shell optimization scenarios.
