This work is part of the effort to develop a speech recognition system for Brazilian Portuguese. The resources for the training and test stages of this system, such as corpora, pronunciation dictionary, language and acoustic models, are publicly available. Here, an application programming interface is proposed in order to facilitate using the open-source Julius speech decoder. Performance tests are presented, comparing the developed systems with a commercial software.

A suite of software interfaces has been developed to facilitate the coupling of disciplines of interest to Computer Aided Engineering. The definition of the interfaces focused on abstraction and interoperability between components of coupled disciplines. The interfaces are language independent and allow for instantiable state to be maintained by the respective implementation. However, to support the largest spectrum of programming models, C calling convention has been adopted. The use of software interfaces places the dependency on the interface and not on the specifics of its implementation. Therefore, different implementations of a given interface can be seamlessly adopted as needed. Implementation of the interfaces remains the responsibility of component developers who have total control over the details of fulfillment. However, strict adherence to the interface definition guarantees interoperability between components. The interface definition is successfully demonstrated through application to Computational Fluid Dynamics.

The paper presents the application programming interfaces (API) for remote multiple user control of the oscilloscope and arbitrary waveform generator. The developed APIs were tested on Rigol DS1054z oscilloscope and Rigol DG822 arbitrary waveform generator and can be used by students to learn the basics of measurements automation and by laboratory instructors to design online laboratory works.

One of the challenges to the adoption of the decentralised approach to digital ID is a lack of consensus and standardisation of how different stakeholders within the ecosystem can inter-operate. As a means to address this issue, we examine the use of standard application programming interfaces (API) to integrate decentralised digital identification systems to preexisting ones. We first examine the current literature and solutions to (a) assess the attributes necessary to compare and contrast APIs, and (b) create a list of API providers within the decentralised digital ID marketplace, (c) compare the API providers against the attributes established. Based on an API Usability and Adoption framework as our lens, we assessed 19 service providers of APIs against their use cases. We identified that whilst the APIs are maturing, the APIs remain inconsistent and poorly adopted. A clear standard API could assist in better adoption. The guidance provided can inform organisations implementing digital identity and VCs along their adoption journey

This paper presents a system architecture, data communnication scheme and application programming interface model or concept for a multiprocessor system based on a network-on-chip (NoC) platform. Each processing node connected to a mesh node has its own local (instruction and data) memory portion, and a global (shared) memory portion. The introduced communication scheme gives only a mimimum overhead in order to offer direct memory-to-memory data transfer. Each processor can make direct message delivery to another processor (producer initiated), or make a request to copy memory blocks from a remote processor (consumer initiated). The complete data transmission is handled by the network interface and a special memory controller. The network interface managed by the specialized memory controller can directly access the shared memory portion. Thus the processing node can continue its normal operation and will be not blocked during the data transfer process.

This paper explores several existing gaming platforms for training and testing artificial intelligence, their application programming interfaces analyzed in order to discover potential complications of porting intellectual systems between them. We present an approach to unification of programming interfaces in order to overcome these complications. Advantages and potential side effects of this approach are described.

Understanding and evaluating systems for open collaboration depends, in part, on appreciating their normative and institutional contexts. In this article, I examine press-public collaboration by tracing how and why news organizations both distance themselves from and depend on networked actors outside the newsroom to achieve professional and organizational goals. I situate contemporary press-public networks within infrastructure scholarship, review their relationship to models of the public sphere, and trace the motivations and assumptions embedded within news organizations' application programming interfaces, software toolkits that let those outside the newsroom access and repurpose journalistic data.

Deploying Patient-Facing application programming interfaces: Thematic Analysis of Health System Experiences

Background: Health systems have recently started to activate patient-facing application programming interfaces (APIs) to facilitate patient access to health data and other interactions. Objective: This study sought to ascertain health systems' understanding, strategies, governance, and organizational infrastructure around patient-facing APIs, as well as their business drivers and barriers, to facilitate national learning, policy, and progress toward adoption. Methods: We performed a content analysis of semistructured interviews with a convenience sample of 10 health systems known to be leading adopters of health technology, having either implemented or planning to implement patient-facing APIs. Results: Of the 10 health systems, eight had operational patient-facing APIs, with organizational strategy driven most by federal policy, the emergence of Health Records on iPhone, and feelings of ethical obligation. The two priority use cases identified were enablement of a patient's longitudinal health record and digital interactions with the health system. The themes most frequently cited as barriers to the increased use of patient-facing APIs were security concerns, an immature app ecosystem that does not currently offer superior functionality compared with widely adopted electronic health record (EHR)-tethered portals, a lack of business drivers, EHR vendor hesitation toward data sharing, and immature technology and standards. Conclusions: Our findings reveal heterogeneity in health system understanding and approaches to the implementation and use of patient-facing APIs. Ongoing study, targeted policy interventions, and sharing of best practices appear necessary to achieve successful national implementation.

Background To improve healthcare quality and empower patients, federal legislation requires nationwide interoperability of electronic health records (EHRs) through Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) application programming interfaces. Nevertheless, key barriers to patient EHR access—limited functionality, English, and health literacy—persist, impeding equitable access to these benefits. Objectives This study aimed to develop and evaluate a digital health solution to address barriers preventing patient engagement with personal health information, focusing on individuals managing chronic cardiovascular conditions. Methods We present LLMonFHIR, an open-source mobile application that uses large language models (LLMs) to allow users to “interact” with their health records at any degree of complexity, in various languages, and with bidirectional text-to-speech functionality. In a pilot evaluation, physicians assessed LLMonFHIR responses to queries on 6 SyntheticMass FHIR patient datasets, rating accuracy, understandability, and relevance on a 5-point Likert scale. Results A total of 210 LLMonFHIR responses were evaluated by physicians, receiving high median scores for accuracy (5/5), understandability (5/5), and relevance (5/5). Challenges summarizing health conditions and retrieving lab results were noted, with variability in responses and occasional omissions underscoring the need for precise preprocessing of data. Conclusions LLMonFHIR's ability to generate responses in multiple languages and at varying levels of complexity, along with its bidirectional text-to-speech functionality, give it the potential to empower individuals with limited functionality, English, and health literacy to access the benefits of patient-accessible EHRs.

Streamlining land surface model Initialization: Automated data retrieval for VELMA using HMS REST API and GDAL

Continuous monitoring data required for performing environmental model simulations using gridded land surface models (LSMs) are often difficult to obtain and manage, making the modeling process challenging and prone to error. In response, this study focuses on automated retrieval and processing of digital elevation models (DEMs from Google Earth Engine (GEE)), meteorologic drivers of hydrology, and surface runoff time series data, using the Visualizing Ecosystem and Land Management Assessment (VELMA) model as a case study. Our automation methodology is accomplished using the USEPA's Hydrologic Micro Services (HMS) Representation State Transfer (REST) application programming interface (API) and Geospatial Data Abstraction Library (GDAL) with Python. This workflow provides greater efficiency, minimizes data preparation time, reduces manual processing errors, and provides a reusable methodology for use in other modeling studies. With this innovation, users of VELMA and other gridded LSMs will be able to initialize simulations more efficiently, improving their operational capabilities.
