This paper describes an open-source simulator for cyber-physical systems called CyPhySim that is based on Ptolemy II. This simulator supports classical (Runge-Kutta) and quantized-state simulation of ordinary differential equations, modal models (hybrid systems), discrete-event models, the Functional Mockup Interface (FMI) for model-exchange and co-simulation, discrete-time (periodic) systems, and algebraic loop solvers. CyPhySim provides a graphical editor, an XML file syntax for models, and an open API for programmatic construction of models. It includes an innovation called "smooth tokens," which allow for a blend of numerical and symbolic computation, and for certain kinds of system models, dramatically reducing the computation required for simulation.

Mercenaries in Libya: Ramifications of the Treatment of 'Armed Mercenary Personnel' under the Arms Embargo for Private Military Company Contractors

The inclusion of 'armed mercenary personnel' within the terms of the arms embargo imposed upon Libya in SC Resolution 1970, and further elaborated in SC Resolution 1973, although largely unnoticed, holds three significant implications. First, there is the apparent reduction of mercenary personnel from the category of combatancy to that of a method or means of warfare. This may have the subtle effect of reducing or eliminating the human dimension in any such persons. Secondly, there is an implicit departure from the notoriously restrictive definition of 'mercenary' under international law. While this may have the welcomed effect of reinvigorating the stigmatising appellation and renew its potential utility such an inference may not only be subject to a semantic explanation but further obfuscate what objectionable characteristics are being targeted. Thirdly, the explicit use of the broader term 'armed mercenary personnel' is likely to include a significant category of contractors working for Private Military Companies (PMCs). The effect of this is not only to deny armed PMC contractors access to Libyan territory, but crucially illuminates their close proximity to the stigmatised individual mercenary, as defined under international law;the result will be to elucidate the contrived and artificial nature of the legal distinction between the traditional mercenary and the armed PMC contractor. This proximity questions the appropriateness of recent British suggestions of employing PMCs to aid Libyan rebels and may act as a yardstick by which to gauge contemporary regulation frameworks.

Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) provides cloud intelligence at the mobile network edge. MEC provides services for access to radio network information and User Equipment (UE) location and for data plane handling. The potential of MEC is beyond standardized services. In this paper, we propose a new mobile edge service, which provides open access information about UE reachability and activity and enables analytics mobile edge applications to provide UE behavior prognostic to the network. The service is described by typical use cases illustrating the service functionality, data providing uniform access to and storage of data for different applications, and interface definition. Some implementation aspects are considered in terms of modeling the resource state as seen by the network and mobile edge application.

Software libraries, typically accessible through application programming interfaces (APIs), enhance modularity and reduce development time. Nevertheless, their use reinforces system dependency on third-party software. When libraries become obsolete or their APIs change, performing the necessary modifications to dependent systems, can be time-consuming, labour intensive and error-prone. In this paper, we propose a methodology that reduces the effort developers must spend to mitigate library obsolescence. We describe the steps comprising the methodology, i.e., source code analysis, visualisation of hot areas, code-based transformation, and verification of the modified system. Also, we present some preliminary results and describe our plan for developing a fully automated software modernisation approach.

The Platformization of the Web: Making Web Data Platform Ready

In this article, I inquire into Facebook's development as a platform by situating it within the transformation of social network sites into social media platforms. I explore this shift with a historical perspective on, what I refer to as, platformization, or the rise of the platform as the dominant infrastructural and economic model of the social web and its consequences. Platformization entails the extension of social media platforms into the rest of the web and their drive to make external web data "platform ready." The specific technological architecture and ontological distinctiveness of platforms will be examined by taking their programmability into account. I position platformization as a form of platform critique that inquires into the dynamics of the decentralization of platform features and the recentralization of "platform ready" data as a way to examine the consequences of the programmability of social media platforms for the web.

We present MeterPU, an easy-to-use, generic and low-overhead abstraction API for taking measurements of various metrics (time, energy) on different hardware components (e.g. CPU, DRAM, GPU), using pluggable platform-specific measurement implementations behind a common interface in C++. We show that with MeterPU, not only legacy (time) optimization frameworks, such as autotuned skeleton back-end selection, can be easily retargeted for energy optimization, but also switching different optimization goals for arbitrary code sections now becomes trivial. We apply MeterPU to implement the first energy-tunable skeleton programming framework, based on the SkePU skeleton programming library.

In recent years, the damage cost caused by malwares is huge. Thus, malware detection is a big challenge. The task of specifying malware takes a huge amount of time and engineering effort since it currently requires the manual study of the malicious code. Thus, in order to avoid the tedious manual analysis of malicious codes, this task has to be automatized. To this aim, we propose in this work to represent malicious behaviors using extended API call graphs, where nodes correspond to API function calls, edges specify the execution order between the API functions, and edge labels indicate the dependence relation between API functions parameters. We define new static analysis techniques that allow to extract such graphs from programs, and show how to automatically extract, from a set of malicious and benign programs, an extended API call graph that represents the malicious behaviours. Finally, We show how this graph can be used for malware detection. We implemented our techniques and obtained encouraging results: 95.66% of detection rate with 0% of false alarms.
