Assisted automation: Three learning experiences in architectural robotics

Fueled by long-standing dreams of both material efficiency and aesthetic liberation, robots have become part of mainstream architectural discourses, raising the question: How may we nurture an ethos of visual, tactile, and spatial exploration in technologies that epitomize the legacies of industrial automationfor example, the pursuit of managerial efficiency, control, and an ever-finer subdivision of labor? Reviewing and extending a growing body of research on architectural robotics pedagogy, and bridging a constructionist tradition of design education with recent studies of science and technology, this article offers both a conceptual framework and concrete strategies to incorporate robots into architectural design education in ways that foster a spirit of exploration and discovery, which is key to learning creative design. Through reflective accounts of three learning experiences, we introduce the notions assisted automation and robotic embodiment as devices to enrich current approaches to robot-human design, highlighting situated and embodied aspects of designing with robotic machines.

This paper explores ways to incorporate robots into design education, especially in architecture, in ways that privilege students' visual, tactile and spatial engagement with design problems. The paper is informed by constructionist theories of learning and studies of science and technology (STS) re-thinking agency as relational and distributed. We use these lenses to document two introductory learning experiences in architectural robotics, conducted as part of an architecture graduate course. The exercises combine robotics, scripting, model-making and sketching in ways that emphasize, and take advantage of, designers' visual, spatial, and material sensibilities, as well as the contingent nature of human-robot encounters.

Using industrial robots in creative design has generated a wide interest among designers, artists, and architects. While generic, combined with custom or task-specific mounted tools and digital descriptions, these machines have recently become the vehicle of creative explorations in design, architecture, and the arts. Even though numerous researchers and practitioners have proposed applications of robotics in architectural practice, this field is still in its infancy and thus needs more exploration by design and architectural researchers. In this thesis, I have investigated the architectural robotics opportunities by reviewing its design space and characteristics in academia and practice. It resulted in a hypothesis stating that currently available software toolboxes are not sufficient mediums between architects and robots. Accordingly, we need a medium to embed all the constraints that affect a specific robotic system, its mounted tool, and related material system, from early stages of design to materialization. To test this hypothesis, I proposed an analytical grammar to codify spatial design, form finding process, and robotic fabrication behavior through visual computation and algorithmic approaches. The system affordances were later studied through physical prototypes.

This paper employs Research through Design (RtD) approach to customizing building components to address Socio-Environmental issues within the built environment and utilizes shapeshifting artifacts that can be integrated into existing spaces to extend those spaces' functionality, consequently improving occupants' social and physical experience. The paper focuses on the steps and processes necessary to design, program, and fabricate such components and present two types of Dynamic Environmental Plugins that are inspired by Islamic tessellated structures.

Many subgroups in the US remain marginalized from, misunderstood by, or invisible to the larger communities they reside in. Technologies supporting community building, more generally, have focused on apps, but these apps can fall short of making visible and heard subgroups such as the LGTBQ+, immigrant, and black populations. In response to this shortcoming, we report on the design iterations and an early evaluation of communIT-an interactive artifact for making visible and heard subgroups towards building community. To inform the design of communIT, we conducted in our lab a design studio study (N=57), a co-design activity with a to-scale prototype (N= 12), and a co-design activity with a full-scale prototype (N=28). This paper offers a design exemplar of a largescale, cyber-physical artifact that might support groups in shaping their identities, practices, and roles in the larger community.

This project suggests how human-robot interaction might be of service to public institutions during the pandemic crisis. Alice in Bookland aims to ensure a safe environment for children to continue their reading experiences during COVID-19. Due to the lockdown throughout the country, lots of public organizations such as libraries are having a hard time providing their resources, with limited user entrance and open hours. Here, Alice in Bookland complements the situation via providing a safe space outside the library, encouraging readers' healthy reading habits without any undue stress during the pandemic, and raising community awareness of local library resources.

With increasing advancements in information and manufacturing technologies, there is an ever‑growing need for innovative integration and application of computational design and robotic fabrication in architecture. Hybrid Intelligence in architectural Robotic Materialization (HI-ARM) provides methods and frameworks that target this need. HI-ARM introduces methodologies and technologies that incorporate computational, fabrication and material intelligence in integrated design-to-robotic-production workflows. The intelligence is explored at multiple architectural scales (Macro, Meso, Micro) through hybridization of building processes or multi-mode robotic production and ***, Hybridity, and Assembly are introduced as main constituents for materialization frameworks relying on computational design and robotic production. These are tested in a series of original experiments that are presented in this thesis together with four peer-reviewed published papers discussing the process of developing integrated design-to-production methodologies in detail. The contributions show how both architectural materialization processes and building products can be customized in different phases and scales. Moreover, the developed discourse and definitions address the impacts of this research through the lenses of computation and automation in research, education, and practice in the fields of Architecture, Engineering, and Construction.

Materializing hybridity in architecture: design to robotic production of multi-materiality in multiple scales

Buildings consist of subsystems and components which have various functional and performance requirements. This inherent multiplicity demands the design and production of multi-material systems with varying and complementary properties and behaviours. This paper discusses a set of methods of digital design modelling and robotic production of hybridity in various architectural scales. In the case studies, the performance criteria serve as the underlying logic of the design and computation. The projects showcase how programmability and customizability of robotic manufacturing allow for establishing feedback loops from the production to design. Three projects are discussed in detail: a hybrid of flexible cork and rigid polystyrene, a hybrid of structural concrete with an intertwined permanent mould, and a hybrid of soft additively deposited silicone and subtractively produced hard foam. Each project has specific design performance criteria, with which a certain level of geometric complexity and variation is accomplished. Therefore, the research objective is to define and materialize the practical and robotically producible ranges of geometric complexities for each of the proposed methods. Additionally, the customization and development of robotic production setups are discussed. The research concludes that multi-materiality achieved through multimode robotic production methods introduces a higher, on-demand, and performance-driven resolution in building systems.

This paper presents the design, fabrication, and programming of a reconfigurable structure. The structure is comprised of modular, programable units, which can be stacked together, and collectively construct surfaces that shape-shifts in response to the surrounding physical and social conditions aiming at enhancing the link between occupants and the built environment.
