When novice engineers (fresh or recent graduates with little industry experience) join a SaaS (Software-as-a-Service) product company, they are tasked with comprehending the product, especially its behavior and dynamics. We believe that they can comprehend more effectively if they know and understand the architecture patterns used in the product. Are the current architecture pattern descriptions of high quality? Do they fit the needs of novice engineers? We evaluated the pattern descriptions of Model-View-Controller (MVC) (a popular and important architecture pattern for cloud systems) from a quality and fitment perspective and found gaps. To address these gaps, we have built a System of Systems (SoS) model of MVC that uses a transition systems vocabulary and a set-theoretic notation. In the paper, we show that this SoS model provides a rich set of information about the behavior and dynamics of the MVC components and their interactions. The model bridges the gaps in the MVC pattern description. One of the contributions of the paper is to provide criteria to evaluate the pattern descriptions for quality and fitment for novice engineers. The paper proposes that we augment the benchmark pattern description of MVC with an SoS model. The paper also demonstrates a general approach to building SoS models for architecture patterns and recommends creating a catalog of SoS models for SaaS architecture patterns. We believe such a catalog will significantly help novice engineers in comprehension and other software engineering activities.

Applying software architecture patterns in architecture design is an important way to construct high quality design of software architecture. Meanwhile, the selection of architecture patterns has a close relationship to the quality requirements of software systems to be developed. Applying a specific architecture pattern can usually address several quality requirements, and further optimize architecture design. In this paper, we review existing recommendation methods of architecture patterns based on quality requirements, then analyze and verify the validity of a recommendation method through a replicated experiment in software engineering. The result of this work provides architects a verified method to select suitable architecture patterns based on quality requirements.

Scale and otolith morphology and morphometry of Indian oil sardine Sardinella longiceps (Clupeidae) were investigated and described using light and scanning electron microscopy from eight different body regions for scales and the right and left otoliths. Scales of the Indian oil sardine show general characteristics of the other studied clupeids sand that are easily distinguishable from other fish groups, by having striae in the posterior field. The studied cycloid scales of S. longiceps were classified into three types based on the overall shape including circular (e.g. true circular and cordate), pentagonal and quadrilateral in the different body regions. The circular shape was the most common shape (87.5%), while the quadrilateral and pentagonal forms constituted 6.25% each. The results also showed that the relative scale size (J-index) plays a desirable contribution in separating the examined populations. The results showed that the mean (or relative) scale size for all the eight regions in the Oman Sea population is larger than the Arabian Sea population. Also, another scale variable, the scale shape index (Si index), demonstrated variation (a mean of 0.86 to 1.1) in different regions of both populations from the Oman and Arabian Seas. Interestingly, here, we found that scale characters of S. longiceps not only differ from its other congeneric species, but also differ in the populations from both sides of the Oman Sea (Iran and Oman) and the Arabian Sea. It shows a positive signal for the presence of different taxonomic and management unit in the Oman and Arabian Seas. The idea should be approved by using integrated molecular and morphological traits. The otolith morphology of S. longiceps from the Oman and Arabian Seas was more conservative than the scales, which can be due to its function actin primarily as a balance organ and also enhancing hearing. We present and evaluate an IoT-enabled sensing and actuating system for localizing illegal industrial harsh discharges of polluting wastewater in sewer networks. The special conditions of the sewer environment bring special challenges for the design of an IoT system and of its real-time algorithm for anomaly detection and localization in wastewater networks. The proposed design fulfills these requirements by using a new IoT architecture pattern, which we generalize and name Hop-by-hop Anomaly Detection and Actuation (HADA). The distributed anomaly detection and localization algorithm makes predictions over previous sensor measurements, while taking into account seasonality effects of wastewater and noise of the sensors. Based on simulations in a large network with three common illegal industrial wastewater pollutants, the advantages and limitations of the proposed wastewater anomaly localization system are discussed. The IoT system, including its anomaly detection and localization algorithm, was implemented using in a low-power microcontroller and tested in flowing wastewater with different harsh industrial waste.

The adoption of autonomous cars requires operational critical functions even in the event of HW faults and/or SW defects, and protection of safety-critical functions against security threats. Defining appropriate safe and secure architectures is challenging and costly. In previous work, we have proposed tools to automate the recommendation of safety and security patterns for safety-critical systems. However, safety and security measures may (negatively) influence system performance, besides introducing additional development effort. We present a design space exploration approach, a model-based engineering workflow and tool prototype for automated guidance on trade-off decisions when applying safety and security patterns on a given (unsafe) baseline architecture. Based on models that abstract the vehicle's functionality and its software and hardware components, as well as an engine for the automated pattern recommendation, we investigate the optimization of HW/SW deployments, and provide a trade-off analysis for different architecture candidates. We implemented our approach in an open-source tool and evaluate it with a model of the Apollo autonomous driving platform.

The Lambda architecture has been highly criticized, mostly because of its complexity and because the real-time and correctness properties are each effective in a different layer but not in the overall architecture. Nevertheless, it proposes some interesting mechanisms. We present a renewal of the Lambda architecture: the Lambda+ architecture, supporting both exploratory and real-time analyzes on data. The use of sensor technology in companies is steadily increasing and until now there has been a lack of a fundamental architecture for making heterogeneous actuators and sensors available to the consumer in a uniform manner. In this paper, we will propose an architecture which supports protocol independent automatic integration and configuration of such devices into a system of systems. Measured values will be stored as SenML documents in a MQTT broker. The used IoT automation framework Eclipse Arrowhead assists consumers in finding required devices by use of metadata description.

Carbonate Platform Reef-Shoal Reservoir architecture Study and Characteristic Evaluation: A Case of S Field in Turkmenistan

Carbonate sediments are susceptible to many factors, such as paleostructure, diagenesis, and strong microbial alteration;as such, their sedimentary architecture still calls for further research. In this study, the reef and shoal bodies in the XVm and XVp layers of the Middle-Upper Jurassic Karlov-Oxfordian in the S gas field were used as the object, and the architecture of the reef-shoal facies was studied. Based on the idea of "vertical grading and horizontal boundary", the interface characteristics of the 6th to 4th levels of reef-shoal bodies in the study area were summarized, as were four ways to determine the boundaries of reef-shoal bodies. Based on the dense well network, we quantitatively described the scale of each small layer of single reef shoal body through the point-line-surface method and established a geological database of the reef shoal bodies in the study area. In addition, we established the width and thickness of the reef shoal body and the empirical formula for relationships. The study of morphological characteristics of reef-shoal bodies and the degree of overlap revealed six architecture models of reef-shoal bodies. The vertical and lateral superimposed reefs were obtained by evaluating the reservoir space, pore throat characteristics, and physical property characteristics corresponding to various architecture models. The vertical and lateral superimposed shoals corresponded to large reservoir thicknesses. The petrophysical properties were good, and we concluded that the reef-shoal superimposed area was a sweet spot for reservoir development. We applied the research results of reef-shoal architecture reservoir characteristics to gas field development, and therefore improved well pattern deployment in the reef-shoal superimposed area. By comparing the test results of newly deployed horizontal wells with adjacent vertical wells, we confirmed that the selection of horizontal wells was better for gas field development.
