Nordic countries have to deal with traffic safety challenges during the winter weather conditions such as snow, ice, snow slush, black ice etc. In order to increase the effectiveness of the winter road maintenance (WRM) decisions, an open and modular intelligent winter road maintenance support information system (IWiRoM) has been developed for Latvia's road managers responsible for WRM operations. IWiRoM allows to make data-driven proactive decisions, minimize response time for performing optimal WRM operations, thus promoting driving safety during the winter season. During the IWiRoM development project an ecosystem has been established including large variety of actors, roles, responsibilities and interests. In order to develop an effective WRM solution, an extensive collaboration has been carried out with different stakeholders requesting an appropriate method for IWiRoM solution architecture design supporting communication during the project development and after. This paper describes how "C4 model" has been used as an architecture visualization method that gradually decomposes the system, defining the main building blocks and designing and detailing the specific services and components sequentially. Therefore, C4 method ensures the level of detail depending on stakeholder needs and interests.

A model of the architecture of a software module for automated visualization is described. The model contains information about the structural components of the program and the connections between them. The proposed software complex for the automatic construction of program models written in Swift is characterized. A method for using this model to detect design flows has been demonstrated with an example.

Net2Vis-A Visual Grammar for Automatically Generating Publication-Tailored CNN architecture visualizations

To convey neural network architectures in publications, appropriate visualizations are of great importance. While most current deep learning papers contain such visualizations, these are usually handcrafted just before publication, which results in a lack of a common visual grammar, significant time investment, errors, and ambiguities. Current automatic network visualization tools focus on debugging the network itself and are not ideal for generating publication visualizations. Therefore, we present an approach to automate this process by translating network architectures specified in Keras into visualizations that can directly be embedded into any publication. To do so, we propose a visual grammar for convolutional neural networks (CNNs), which has been derived from an analysis of such figures extracted from all ICCV and CVPR papers published between 2013 and 2019. The proposed grammar incorporates visual encoding, network layout, layer aggregation, and legend generation. We have further realized our approach in an online system available to the community, which we have evaluated through expert feedback, and a quantitative study. It not only reduces the time needed to generate network visualizations for publications, but also enables a unified and unambiguous visualization design.

This paper presents the MicroService architecture Recovery (MiSAR) toolset for software engineers (software architects and developers) that need to semi-automatically obtain as-implemented architectural models of existing microservice-based systems. The MiSAR approach has been designed following Model Driven architecture, and a set of components have been developed to support the semi-automatic support of MiSAR. The toolset first parses microservice-based systems and generates a Platform-Specific Model, which is an abstract representation of the system using the technology. Then, a model transformation engine automatically generates a Platform Independent Model which represents the as-implemented microservice architectural mode of a system. To support the visualization of as-implemented architectural models, the Graphical Model Generator component of the toolset can be used. The Graphical Model Generator allows the software engineer to obtain quantitative metrics of the microservice architectural model and UML diagrams representing different views of the architecture.

The evolution of decentralized microservice-based systems is challenging. These challenges are classified into static and dynamic categories. Regarding the static perspective, documenting and visualizing the fluid application topology is something few have been able to accomplish. Building an architecture map of services design is a complicated task in its interpretation rather than construction. Therefore, the system-centric and up-to-date view became essential for such distributed systems. The dynamic perspective considers the process of investigation and service path detection. Therefore performing root cause analysis is a burdening task;such that tracing data is needed to be put in the right context to facilitate the investigation. Moreover, visualizing these traces over the traditional visualization techniques couldn't be feasible with the large number of microservices involved in the system. This paper proposes a visualization concept for microservices-based systems using the Augmented Reality (AR) technique, which merges these static and dynamic behaviors into a single centric view. In addition, we challenge the difficulty related to tracing and debugging an issue in such distributed systems. This concept is designed to work as a dynamic documentation and traceability platform for these systems. A proof of concept and a research study are implemented to show the viability and success of this proposal.

As microservices become more popular, more drawbacks become apparent to developers. One issue that many teams face today is the failure to visualize the entire system architecture holistically. Without a full view of the system, the architecture can become convoluted as teams add and subtract from their system without reconciling their changes. One established practice to determine a view on the entire system involves dynamic analysis of microservice interaction and dependencies. In this mapping study, we investigate dynamic analysis as a way to visualize system architecture. Capturing the architectural view with dynamic analysis has the ability to build the system and then show its behavior at run-time. We identify dynamic analysis techniques, the corresponding tools, and the models that these practices can generate. The findings of this study are relevant to developers of decentralized systems looking for a way to visualize their system architecture in a dynamic perspective.

Relationship between student profile, tool use, participation, and academic performance with the use of Augmented Reality technology for visualized architecture models

In this study, we describe the implementation and evaluation of an experiment with Augmented Reality (AR) technology in the visualization of 3D models and the presentation of architectural projects by students of architecture and building engineering. The proposal is based on the premise that the technology used in AR, such as mobile devices, is familiar to the student. When used in a collaborative manner, the technology is able to achieve a greater level of direct engagement with the proposed content, thereby improving academic outcomes. The objective was to assess the feasibility of using AR on mobile devices in educational environments and to investigate the relationship between the usability of the tool, student participation, and the improvement in academic performance after using AR. The validation was performed through a case study in which students were able to experience a virtual construction process overlapped onto real environments. Results were obtained by students' pre-tests and post-tests. In line with our assumptions, the use of mobile devices in the classroom is highly correlated with motivation, and there is a significant correlation with academic achievement. However, the difficulty of using and generating content is a complex factor that suggests difficulty when implementing more complicated models. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Visualizing and Measuring Enterprise architecture: An Exploratory BioPharma Case

We test a method that was designed and used previously to reveal the hidden internal architectural structure of software systems. The focus of this paper is to test if it can also uncover new facts about the components and their relationships in an enterprise architecture, i.e., if the method can reveal the hidden external structure between architectural components. Our test uses data from a biopharmaceutical company. In total, we analyzed 407 components and 1,157 dependencies. Results show that the enterprise structure can be classified as a core-periphery architecture with a propagation cost of 23%, core size of 32%, and architecture flow through of 67%. We also found that business components can be classified as control elements, infrastructure components as shared, and software applications as belonging to the core. These findings suggest that the method could be effective in uncovering the hidden structure of an enterprise architecture.

Having an up-to-date knowledge of the architecture of a software system is of primary importance, since it affects every aspect of software development. It aids understanding the system, helps defining high level conditions and constraints for making decisions, supports dependency analysis, logical grouping of components, evaluation of high level design, etc. During the evolution of a software, the documentation of its architecture may not be maintained because of the strict deadlines, resulting in an increasing gap between the architectural design and implementation. The national grant project named GOP-1.1.1-07/1-2008-0077 sponsored by the New Hungarian Development Plan, supports the development of appropriate tools for automatic architecture reconstruction and reverse engineering of software systems. The project will result in a complex solution for automatic architecture reconstruction of software systems by offering both a flexible and highly customizable set of services and a state-of-the-art boxed product. On one hand, architecture reconstruction in the scope of the project deals with visualization of the components and their relations. On the other hand, tracking the changes of the architectural elements during software evolution will also be supported. The tools of the project are being developed by FrontEndART Ltd. while the theoretical and technological background is provided by the Department of Software Engineering at University of Szeged.
