Most formal methods see the correctness of a software system as a binary decision. However, proving the correctness of complex systems completely is difficult because they are composed of multiple components, usage scenarios, and environments. We present Quac, a modular approach for quantifying the correctness of service-oriented software systems by combining software architecture modeling with deductive verification. Our approach is based on a model of the service-oriented architecture and the probabilistic usage scenarios of the system. The correctness of a single service is approximated by a coverage region, which is a formula describing which inputs for that service are proven to not lead to an erroneous execution. The coverage regions can be determined by a combination of various analyses, e.g., formal verification, expert estimations, or testing. The coverage regions and the software model are then combined into a probabilistic program. From this, we can compute the probability that under a given usage profile no service is called outside its coverage region. We also present an implementation of Quac for Java using the modeling tool Palladio and the deductive verification tool KeY. We demonstrate its usability by applying it to a software simulation of an energy system.

architecture modeling has a high popularity among IT professionals for developing new systems and services. Despite its popularity, architecture models are rarely used in the operations phase in the lifecycle of systems, and architecture models do not contains business parts of an organisation. The presented, ongoing research project targets to explore the relationship between business and IT architectures through combining existing architecture modeling frameworks. Building the relationship between business and IT architectures has high importance in designing measurement models, that includes not only both domain's KPIs, but also the relationship between them. © 2011 IEEE.

SAM-SoS: A Stochastic Software architecture modeling and Verification Approach for Complex System-of-Systems

A System-of-Systems (SoS) is a complex, dynamic system whose Constituent Systems (CSs) are not known precisely at design time, and the environment in which they operate is uncertain. SoS behavior is unpredictable due to underlying architectural characteristics such as autonomy and independence. Although the stochastic composition of CSs is vital to achieving SoS missions, their unknown behaviors and impact on system properties are unavoidable. Moreover, unknown conditions and volatility have significant effects on crucial Quality Attributes (QAs) such as performance, reliability and security. Hence, the structure and behavior of a SoS must be modeled and validated quantitatively to foresee any potential impact on the properties critical for achieving the missions. Current modeling approaches lack the essential syntax and semantics required to model and verify SoS behaviors at design time and cannot offer alternative design choices for better design decisions. Therefore, the majority of existing techniques fail to provide qualitative and quantitative verification of SoS architecture models. Consequently, we have proposed an approach to model and verify Non-Deterministic (ND) SoS in advance by extending the current algebraic notations for the formal models as a hybrid stochastic formalism to specify and reason architectural elements with the required semantics. A formal stochastic model is developed using a hybrid approach for architectural descriptions of SoS with behavioral constraints. Through a model-driven approach, stochastic models are then translated into PRISM using formal verification rules. The effectiveness of the approach has been tested with an end-to-end case study design of an emergency response SoS for dealing with a fire situation. Architectural analysis is conducted on the stochastic model, using various qualitative and quantitative measures for SoS missions. Symmetric architecture modeling with a Single Image

We present a method to recover a 3D texture-mapped architecture model from a single image. Both single image based modeling and architecture modeling are challenging problems. We handle these difficulties by employing constraints derived from shape symmetries, which are prevalent in architecture. We first present a novel algorithm to calibrate the camera from a single image by exploiting symmetry. Then a set of 3D points is recovered according to the calibration and the underlying symmetry. With these reconstructed points, the user interactively marks out components of the architecture structure, whose shapes and positions are automatically determined according to the 3D points. Lastly, we texture the 3D model according to the input image, and we enhance the texture quality at those foreshortened and occluded regions according to their symmetric counterparts. The modeling process requires only a few minutes interaction. Multiple examples are provided to demonstrate the presented method.

To increase the computing performance the current trend is towards applying parallel computing in which the tasks are run in parallel on multiple nodes. Current approaches in parallel computing tend to focus on mapping parallel algorithms to parallel computing platforms. However, the complexity and variety of current software systems goes beyond the notion of algorithms only, and needs to consider the design from a broader application perspective that requires explicit design abstractions. For this purpose, we propose an architecture framework for modeling parallel applications to support the communication among the stakeholders, to reason about the design decisions and to support the analysis of the architectural design. The architecture framework consists of six coherent set of viewpoints which addresses different concerns in the design of parallel applications. The architecture framework is based on a metamodel that is derived after a thorough domain analysis on parallel computing. To support the architecture design process we have also developed the corresponding tool set that implements the architecture framework. The application of the architecture framework is illustrated for an order management application.

On the foundation of analyzing and comparing the literature of service system, service product, service innovation and mass customization thought, we explored the service system architecture modeling based on the reconfiguration technique. Through object-oriented definition, proposed the architecture model frame combining the state representation structure with dynamic operation structure of service system, researched the plug and play manner of the domain modules and the bus module. The lower stair of the model is the basic stair of the combination of the state representation structure and dynamic operation structure which package the service system core information and domain relevant information into the core model. While the dynamic operation module records the establishing process of domain models. The upper stair is the docking stair describing the relevant domain model through extracting and complementing the information from the core model for quickly building to enhance the reusability and the reconfiguration speed of the model.

An automata-based approach for addressing erroneous behaviors and deadlocks in component-based systems

In component-based modeling, a system is built by constructing several coordinating components. In turn, the communication principles among components are modeled by architectures that characterize the permissible interactions and the topology of the components. Several architectures impose also order restrictions to the appearance of the permissible interactions. The application of an architecture to a component-based system does not guarantee that the behaviors of the system meet all the requirements of the architecture. In turn, this can lead the system to actions that do not follow the intended order of the interactions, which we call erroneous behaviors. In this paper, we tackle the problem of such order violations by introducing a formal framework for building component-based systems that avoid erroneous behaviors. For this, we formalize the systems by nondeterministic finite automata and we model their architecture by a fragment of extended propositional interaction logic. This logic achieves to encode the order restrictions in the occurrence of the permissible interactions of the architecture. Given a component-based system with an architecture, we propose an automata-based method for constructing a respective system without erroneous behaviors. Our algorithm returns a system that is also free of deadlocks, meaning that the system does not reach states from which it can no longer progress.

A vineyard architecture model coupled with a soil water balance model is used to explore the links between vineyard reflectance in different scenarios of plant water stress, taking into account meteorological data, agricultural data and site specific information to produce virtual 3D scenes describing vineyard canopies. The ability of the model to predict LAI dynamics was evaluated against destructive measurements in four experimental sites producing reasonable results (RMSE=0.30). The model was run in direct mode to simulate vineyard canopies with three different levels of water stress (no irrigation, intermediate irrigation and full irrigation). Canopy reflectance and NDVI vegetation index were calculated for the simulated scenes using ray-tracing techniques. The results show that vineyard water stress can be detected in vineyard canopies through LAI estimation from canopy reflectance and NDVI. However, the links between LAI and reflectance are highly influenced by canopy architecture at zenith viewings: the effect of agricultural practices as trellis system or pruning should be taken into account to interpret correctly reflectance data. The sensitivity of reflectance to vineyard architecture depends on the viewing direction: at zenith the contribution of row dimensions and leaf spatial distribution is maxima, while at viewing zenith angles >60 degrees and azimuth perpendicular to rows, sensitivity of reflectance to LAI is enhanced, with a small influence of vineyard architecture.

modeling and Analysis of Real-Time and Embedded Systems (MARTE) is a Unified modeling Language (UML) profile, which has been developed to model concepts specific to Real-Time and Embedded Systems (RTES). In the last 5 years, we have applied UML/MARTE to three distinct industrial problems in three industry sectors: architecture modeling and configuration of large-scale and highly configurable integrated control systems, model-based robustness testing of communication-intensive systems, and model-based environment simulator generation of large-scale RTES for testing. In this paper, we report on our experience of solving these problems by applying UML/MARTE on four industrial case studies. We highlight the challenges we faced with respect to the industrial adoption of MARTE. Based on our combined experience, we derive a framework to guide practitioners for future applications of UML/MARTE in an industrial context. The framework provides a set of detailed guidelines that help reduce the gap between the modeling notations and real-world industrial application needs.
