Real-time automation and monitoring of the batch growth of microalga Tetraselmis viridis and cyanobacterium Limnospira platensis

An automated system for the real-time measurement and control of the optical density of the microalga Tetraselmis viridis and cyanobacterium Limnospira platensis has been developed based on the open-source arduino nano electronics platform. The system consists of a main unit, an optical density sensor, a relay unit, a temperature sensor, and associated software. The optical density sensor consists of light diodes (with a maximum emission spectrum in the infrared region at 940 nm) as a light source and photodiodes as receivers;the culture density is estimated based on the attenuation of radiation passing through it. The proposed method exhibited high accuracy (R2 = 0.995, with root mean square error being approximately 0.1 g L-1) in a wide range of biomass concentrations, from 0.27 to 0.97 g L-1 for T. viridis and from 0.035 to 1.25 g L-1 for L. platensis. The registered biomass productivity at the linear stage of batch cultivation reached 0.15 g L-1 day-1 for T. viridis and 0.17 g L-1 day-1 for L. platensis. The sensor readings were found to be dependent on air temperature, with a coefficient of 0.0136 V/degrees C. This suggests that the system has the potential for use in a changing outdoor environment, provided that temperature correction is applied during calculations. Furthermore, the measuring system does not require sampling from the photobioreactor or dilution of high cell concentrations prior to measuring dense microalgae cultures. This eliminates the risk of dilution error and contamination. The experimental application of the system for the studied species demonstrated its potential for use with microalgae species exhibiting diverse pigment compositions, including those prone to sedimentation and filamentous forms.

Low Cost Smart Ground System for Rainwater Harvesting for Indian Houses using IoT Technology

Water conservation is critical because it is one of the most significant factors for all species' survival. According to the Central Ground Water Board's estimates, underground water will be scarce in 15 Indian states by 2025 (Firstpost. Two-third of the world, much of India to face water scarcity, stress by 2025: Expert, 2018). However, as per the report from Ministry of Environment and Forest, only 10 to 20% rainwater is harvested. In urban areas, it is seen that nowadays concrete structures are constructed everywhere, so it is not possible to recharge the water table by natural process of raining. All the rainwater which is one of the sources for fresh water goes to drain. This causes the depletion of groundwater level which may be fatal in the future. Therefore, a rainwater harvesting system is required in Indian household to conserve water. On the other hand, the urban cities are having high pollutant levels which in turn affecting the quality of water. The government has defined certain parameters for quality checking of water. With the aid of the suitable sensors and IoT boards, quality checking, monitoring and water segregation can be easily achieved. In this work, an efficient and cost effective technique of rainwater harvesting has been presented. Some real case studies have been done at Indian houses in order to validate the effectiveness of system in terms of its implementation and cost analysis. As a result, the proposed system becomes one of the smart solutions to address the modern problem of rainwater harvesting with water quality management in low cost.

A Wireless-controlled 3D printed Robotic Hand Motion System with Flex Force Sensors

Hand gesture recognition is an emerging field of technology in robotics and human-computer interaction. It has tremendous applications in daily life activities and intelligent workplaces. In this study, a system which could help people to work and operate without directly using hands or contacting by hands, is proposed and demonstrated. This system composed of a glove with flexible force sensors and a 3D printed robotic forearm. The user wearing the glove could control the action of the 3D printed robotic forearm. The 3D printed forearm simultaneously acted following the motion of the glove. The 3D printed forearm was composed of 46 individual parts that were printed with white biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA). Electronic components in the system are five flex sensors, a master arduino nano, a slave arduino nano, a wireless NRF24L01 transmitter module banding on the glove, a second wireless NRF24L01 receiver module in the forearm and five motors. The five flex sensors on the fingers of the glove detected and collected the signals reflecting the movements of the hands. The arduino nano processed the signals from the flex sensors and sent them through the wireless transmitter module to the slave arduino nano. In order to control the action of the robotic forearm, it was embedded with a slave arduino nano as a control kernel, a wireless NRF24L01 receiver module and five actuators. The slave arduino nano received and processed the signals through the wireless receiver module. After that, the signals were sent to the actuators- servo motors. The fingers' action in the robotics arm was executed with the actuators. After carefully testing the system, the robotic arm followed the action correctly with a maximum 0.133 ms time delay all the time. This system could be really useful for the users who work in dangerous conditions, hazardous environment or require remote operation for safety reasons. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A novel hierarchical temperature control method of an electric oven and its experimental evaluation

Purpose - Ovens are semi-industrial multipurpose equipment that are used to provide a desired temperature for specific chemical processes. Temperature regulation in the presence of different type of disturbances and dealing with nonlinear dynamics with large dead time (up to a few minutes) are some undesirable factors that have to be considered in the controller design procedure of the oven systems. Due to these factors, the classical PID controller tuned using Cohen-Coon or Ziegler-Nichol's tuning methods often fails to meet satisfactory closed-loop performance. Design/methodology/approach - In this paper, to deal with the limitations on the oven system due to the undesirable factors, a hierarchical automaton-guided form controller has been designed. The proposed controller includes several discrete PI controllers, each of which operates locally in the defined operating regions whose separation idea is specific to this paper. Based on the idea proposed in the separation of regions, the controller's coefficients tuning rules are extracted prior to any determination. Then, a supervisor controller has assumed the task of switching between local controllers. In the next step, by considering a conceptual model for the oven system and using a candidate Lyapunov function, the stability conditions of closed-loop system are discussed and the necessary conditions for the asymptotic stability are derived. The proposed controller is practically implemented with the help of the arduino nano platform. Findings - Using several experiments, the superiority of the proposed hierarchical controller in terms of performance and energy consumption has been demonstrated. Originality/value - The proposed hierarchical controller has been implemented practically and an acceptable closed-loop performance has been achieved. To illustrate the efficiency of the proposed method, the closed-loop stability of this method is shown using the Lyapunov theory.

the platform arduino with a number of sensors standard can be used as components of an electronic system for acquiring measures and controls. This paper presents the design of a low-cost and effective solar charge controller. This system includes several elements such as the solar panel converter DC/DC, battery, circuit MPPT using Microcontroller, sensors, and the MPPT algorithm. The MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracker) algorithm has been implemented using an arduino nano with the preferred program. The voltage and current of the Panel are taken where the program implemented will work and using this algorithm that MPP will be reached. This paper provides details on the solar charge control device at the maximum power point. The results include the change of the duty cycle with the change in load and thus mean the variation of the buck converter output voltage and current controlled by the MPPT algorithm.

In almost all the countries people use mobile phones as a necessary tool for communication. Now a day's the number of mobiles is more than mobile phone users as technology becomes advanced, very convenient to use, and also the low-cost device. But people can't travel long distances with their mobile phones as the average battery life of the mobile is less than 10 hours. So, we designed a wireless solar mobile charger that uses solar energy to provide sufficient electricity to charge mobile phones. The aim of using a wireless solar mobile charger is that we are using a renewable energy source so that we generate electricity free of cost, and it will give a better solution to people who travel long distances with their mobile phones. For wireless charging principle of inductive coupling is used to transfer power between transmitter and receiver wirelessly. As solar energy is free and abundantly available the proposed device will provide the best solution for outdoor mobile phone charging. It is portable and doesn't require electric supply as it uses solar energy from the solar panel. Its main advantage is to the trekkers, farmers, travelers, and people who are roaming for personal or industrial use. As this charger is not useful for smartphones it will use in many industries that are not using old mobile phones as compared to smartphones in their industries.

In 2015, at the Image Processing Research Laboratory (INTI-Lab) of the Universidad de Ciencias y Humanidades, one proposed the INCA programme (Research Programme on Aerospace Sciences). As a part of this programme, the design of a nanosatellite was included. Although the progress was plodding, after 3 years one wants to show these advances. One of the main limitations to have access to space, especially for developing countries, is the high cost of missions. In this sense, in the present work, we propose the use of commercial electric, electronic and electromechanical (EEE) devices, these being more economical than those for military use. UCHSat-1 nanosatellite advances are mainly at the simulation level. It is a CubeSat of 3 units that can be simulated with the help of the beeApp tool of Open Cosmos. Likewise, the nanosatellite modules are being implemented as a function of arduino. The obtained results show, at least in the first instance, the feasibility of the use of arduino for the implementation of the different nanosatellite modules. © 2020, Chinese Society of Astronautics.

arduino based Bluetooth-equipped pulse oximeter is a measurement device that uses near infrared spectroscopy to measure blood pressure, and is designed with the HC-05 Bluetooth module. It can be employed using a smart mobile application or hardware. The oximeter uses a I2C 16 * 2 display module, which is a parallel data converter chip that works seamlessly with the LCD display module. This chip can convert the I2C data into parallel data, which is required by the LCD display. The portable terminal uses a digital algorithm to determine the value of the oxygen saturation and the pulse rate, and it does so through the smart mobile app interface. The designed oximeter can help doctors to keep a time to time check on the patient's pulse and Spo2 level from anywhere in the hospital via their mobile phones, which would especially be helpful to keep the doctors, nurses distant from the patients during any Pandemic. The paper presents a novel model of arduino based Bluetooth Pulse Oximeter using sensors and Bluetooth module with its applications in various sectors.

Energy monitoring and conservation holds prime importance in today's world because of the imbalance between power generation and demand. The current scenario says that the power generated, which is primarily contributed by fossil fuels may get exhausted within the next 20 years. Currently, there are very accurate electronic energy monitoring systems available in the market. Most of these monitor the power consumed in a domestic household, in case of residential applications. Many a times, consumers are dissatisfied with the power bill as it does not show the power consumed at the device level. This paper presents the design and implementation of an energy meter using arduino microcontroller which can be used to measure the power consumed by any individual electrical appliance. Internet of Things (IoT) is an emerging field and IoT based devices have created a revolution in electronics and IT. The main intention of the proposed energy meter is to monitor the power consumption at the device level, upload it to the server and establish remote control of any appliance. The energy monitoring system precisely calculates the power consumed by various electrical devices and displays it through a home energy monitoring website. The advantage of this device is that a user can understand the power consumed by any electrical appliance from the website and can take further steps to control them and thus help in energy conservation. Further on, the users can monitor the power consumption as well as the bill on daily basis.
