Real-Time Wireless Control for a Data Acquisition-Based Micro-Computer System

Real-time communications (RTC) wireless multi-channel data acquisition systems provide promising remote interactive solutions. This paper develops and implements wireless octet channels for data detection and processing. Data analysis and suitable control action are accomplished by using an arduino uno controller interfaced with the National Instruments (NI) LabVIEW virtual engineering toolset. A simple graphical user interface has been developed and implemented. Sensors for humidity, pulse, temperature and motion are used for reading the environmental parameters. The system can accommodate measurements of eight individual parameters at different reading speeds. In addition, high-accuracy data measurements can be obtained by using the mean values technique for the three sensors in cases such as temperature and humidity. An efficient storage technique for dated and timed data can be optimized to cancel all successive repeated measurements. Whenever the environmental parameters have been changed the system will store only the updated changes, thus providing an accurate enough description of the sensor output as well as significant reduction in required memory. Quad flags are implemented as the actuators triggering signals. The acquired data can be remotely monitored via either smartphones or computers located in the WI-FI local area network coverage area.

Architectural design and performance evaluation of a ZigBee technology based adaptive sprinkler irrigation robot

Irrigation is an assistive measure to salvage the problem of inadequate water for plantation and vegetation in dry places and during dry seasons. In this paper, the architectural design and performance evaluation of an adaptive sprinkler irrigation robot are presented. Two assemblies (transmitter's and receiver's modules) to be interfaced via a ZigBee communication were designed to enhance prototyping efficiency. The mechanical structure of the robot chassis was designed using SolidWorks and the assemblies with arduino uno microcontroller and ZigBee XBee module. Dynamic stress tests and fatigue analysis simulations were carried out on the designed chassis framework under varying loading conditions ranging for minimum to 50 N. The test results are consistent with the designed water carrying capacity of 5 L and can be deduced based on flow rate of the pump, that the water would be exhausted above 100 s. So a complete sprinkling cycle would last for about two minutes and thirty seconds. It was noticed that soil moisture content during day is lower than after irrigation has been carried out. The efficiency of the irrigation robot was also examined by the relationship between volume of water carried and the speed of the sprinkler robot. The presentation concludes with the system performance including the analysis of the water carrying capacity, distance of watering per cycle, and time requirements to water a given area of farmland.

This work details the design, construction, implementation and testing of a standalone robot, based on a convolutional neural network, which receives a voice command, searches and recognizes the target through its camera and moves to the object or person properly recognized. The success rate for the recognition stage has reached 82% in the median for objects tested, 100% for chairs, bottles and people. The processing was performed on a Raspberry Pi 3 B board integrated with an arduino uno to control the actuators.

Development of a low-cost PV system using an improved INC algorithm and a PV panel Proteus model

This paper proposes a photovoltaic (PV) model for the design of PV systems with a simple MPPT to achieve high efficiency, faster response and low cost. First, a PV panel model is developed using SPICE code in Proteus tool. The verification and the validation are performed via an experimental test bench. Afterwards, a new modified Incremental Conductance (INC) algorithm is introduced. The proposed algorithm avoids the high number of the mathematical divisions used in the conventional INC. Both methods are implemented in the low-cost arduino uno board using the simulated PV panel model. The results show that the modified method presents good performances regarding response time (0.1 s), steady-state oscillation, and efficiency (98.5%). To validate the proposed system, a hardware testbench is implemented using the low-cost ATMega328 microcontroller in the arduino uno board. Substantial cost reduction has been attained proving the financial competitiveness of the proposed controller. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Open hardware/software test bench for solar tracker with virtual instrumentation

This work develops an open hardware/Software Test bench for solar tracker. The proposed prototype is based on a dual axis solar tracker controlled with arduino uno which is an open-source prototyping platform based on easy-to-use hardware and software. The solar tracker can be controlled automatically with the help of Light Dependent Resistor (LDR) sensors or manually using a potentiometer. Moreover, this test bench provides a virtual instrumentation based on Excel in which its solar tracker data can be recorded and presented. The hardware used has been chosen to be inexpensive, compact and versatile. The proposed test bench enables large-scale solar tracker research, innovative new curriculum, and solar tracker outreach to younger students. A test of all its functionalities is done, the results show that it is flexible, easy to use. For instance, it can be used indoors using a lamp.

New innovation in technology has led to a lot of improvement in medical devices and system. A traditional method used in healthcare has a lot of concerns which need to be eliminated to make human life more comfortable and hassle free. With the advent of internet world has been changing rapidly. Internet of Things is said to be next big thing in technology. The combination of raspberry pi which is a small Linux computer with Internet of Things has a great potential to be used in design and construction of a healthcare system which would completely change the way healthcare is provided nowadays. A system which consists of sensors to take health parameters like temperature and heart beat as input has been designed and proposed. Input taken from sensor are processed in raspberry pi and displayed on LCD. The processed data are sent on internet on a server by creating a gateway on raspberry pi so that doctors can continuously monitor the health status of patient. A camera on the patient side is put so that patient live monitoring can be done on internet by doctor. An android application and a web application have been designed to access the sensor data whenever they wish so. The proposed model is compared with arduino uno board for validation.

Microcontroller-based methods for zero-crossing detection (ZCD) presented in the literature employ external integrated circuits (ICs) to sense electrical signals, and their algorithms are sophisticated. Therefore, this paper proposes a simple open-loop sensorless microcontroller-based algorithm for determining zero-crossing (ZC) instants of sinusoidal signals that can be used for phase detection (PD) in phase-locked loops (PLLs). The proposed algorithm employs a built-in rounding function in the arduino software environment. The developed system was simulated using MATLAB Simulink (R) to demonstrate its prominent features in recognizing zero-crossing points in two cases: a pure sine signal at a grid frequency of 50 Hz, and distorted signals with total harmonic distortions (THDs) of 10 %, 20 %, 30 %, and 40 %. In the simulation, the proposed system exhibited outstanding results in terms of simplicity, accuracy, and robustness. However, in practice, accuracy and robustness are relative terms, because they depend on the specifications of the microcontroller board. In this study, a low-cost microcontroller board, arduino uno, was used. The uno is an 8-bit board with a 16-MHz clock speed. Therefore, an error in terms of the phase shift emerged in the output signal, which was measured to be 0.0314 rad at 50 Hz. Moreover, the proposed system detected the ZC points of distorted signals with a THD of up to 30 % without using filters and failed at a THD of 40 %. Finally, the ZC points were identified in a three-phase system, and the validity of applying the proposed method to polyphase systems was demonstrated. (c) 2023 THE AUTHORS. Design and Analysis of Hybrid Multilevel Inverter for Asymmetrical Input Voltages

The conversion of DC to AC has emerged as a vital role in Standalone power supply system. While converting DC to AC, it is conceivable to acquire the preferred output voltage and frequency. Voltage source inverters are basically categorized on the basis of output voltage waveforms. Multilevel inverters are replacing conventional inverters by overcoming the short coming of classical topologies. In practical implementation of conversion factors that should be considered are reducing component count and performance characteristics like fault tolerance capability, charge balance control, etc. This paper deals with the design of the single phase hybrid multilevel inverter using the Three-level diode clamped leg and Three-level T-type leg using asymmetrical voltage input sources for standalone system. The entire mathematical modeling of proposed hybrid inverter is presented. The performance parameters evaluated for asymmetrical source condition are THD analysis, reliability, switching and conduction losses are carried out. The simulation and hardware implementation of proposed topology at same load conditions has been done;both the hardware and simulation results are compared.

A desktop customised 3D printer with dual extruders to produce electronic circuitry

3D printing has opened new horizons for the manufacturing industry in general, and 3D printers have become the tools for technological advancements. There is a huge divide between the pricing of industrial and desktop 3D printers with the former being on the expensive side capable of producing excellent quality products and latter being on the low-cost side with moderate quality results. However, there is a larger room for improvements and enhancements for the desktop systems as compared to the industrial ones. In this paper, a desktop 3D printer called Prusa Mendel i2 has been modified and integrated with an additional extruder so that the system can work with dual extruders and produce bespoke electronic circuits. The communication between the two extruders has been established by making use of the In-Chip Serial Program- ming port on the arduino uno controlling the printer. The biggest challenge is to control the flow of electric paint （to be dispensed by the new extruder） and CFD （Computa- tional Fluid Dynamics） analysis has been carried out to ascertain the optimal conditions for proper dispensing. The final product is a customised electronic circuit with the base of plastic （from the 3D printer＇s extruder） and electronic paint （from the additional extruder） properly dispensed to create a live circuit on a plastic platform. This low-cost enhancement to a desktop 3D printer can provide a new prospect to produce multiple material parts where the additional extruder can be filled with any material that can be properly dispensed from its nozzle.

Development of a wireless intravenous drip rate monitoring device

Biotelemetry increases the efficiency of the healthcare professionals. This study proposes the development of a wireless-communication-enabled low-cost, automated drip rate monitoring system, used for intravenous (IV) therapy. The proposed system monitors the falling fluid drops inside the drip chamber, and subsequently calculates and displays the drip rate on a liquid crystal display (LCD) panel. It is capable of wirelessly notifying the central monitoring station when the drip rate is outside the set range. The system was designed using a light emitting diode (LED), a light-dependent resistor (LDR), a microcontroller and an Xbee wireless module. The proposed device is simple, user-friendly and can reduce the workload of the healthcare givers by reducing their regular visit to the patient site.
