Infrared signal-based implementation of model-based predictive control (MPC) for cost saving in a campus building

Model-based predictive control (MPC) is an advanced control method that is used to achieve energy and cost savings in building energy management. However, there are various challenges to implementing MPC in actual buildings, such as additional engineering costs, physical damage to systems, and security concerns. This study proposes a non-intrusive implementation method for MPC based on a low-cost communication system. Firstly, a grey-box building model was developed along with the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) models based on the actual measurements of the test building. A simulation case study of MPC was performed, along with baseline feedback control, using these constructed models. The MPC outperformed the feedback control in terms of comfort, electricity consumption, and cost. It was implemented in an actual test zone to demonstrate the feasibility of a low-cost and non-intrusive implementation method that was realized using arduino-based infrared signal communication and to evaluate the cost-saving potential of the MPC when compared with the baseline control. This experiment was conducted under a confined schedule for occupancy and set-point temperature for three days for the MPC and two days for the baseline feedback control in the cooling season. The cost savings of the MPC are as high as 5.8 %. Additional feedback cases were considered with a non-confined occupancy schedule and set-point temperature. The resulting energy consumption and cost savings are 25.2 % and 33.7 %, respectively. In this study, the applicability of the arduino-based low-cost and non-intrusive implementation method for MPC was demonstrated, and the actual saving percentage of the MPC was compared with the conventional control method in a real building.

Design and experimental investigation on 3- component force sensor in mini CNC milling machine

The design and development of the 3-component force sensor has been proposed for particular installation onto the 3-axis mini CNC milling machine. The system is combined with 3 beam type load cells which has one measured direction, properly laid on each axis in order for detecting and measuring in x, y and z directions, respectively. The arduino board with load cell amplifier (HX711 board) is used to demonstrate the graphical and numerical results of cutting force signals via proper programing on arduino software. The key finding results reveal that the accurate range of measurements should be 120-190 N.

3D-printed operant chambers for rats: Design, assembly, and innovations

Ten years ago, we started a project at the National Autonomous University of Mexico with the purpose of building custom-made operant conditioning chambers that could be used in research and laboratory courses. The focus was to reduce the cost and improve the flexibility of operant chambers by integrating advances in electronics and manufacturing processes such as 3D printing and laser-cutting technologies. With these technologies we designed and built customizable and reliable operant chambers for rats in which responses can be recorded using levers or photocells. Reinforcement is delivered precisely using a pellet or a water dispenser and auditory and visual stimuli are presented with buzzers and LEDs. An arduino microcontroller board connected to a PC running programs written in Visual Basic controls and records experimental events. The origins and latest improvements of the project are described and instructions to build one operant chamber are provided. Additionally, we describe a few examples of modifications of the design with the purpose of researching a wider range of behavioral phenomena. The designs and programs are open-source and open-distribution so they can be downloaded for free and can be modified freely by users to adapt to numerous experimental settings.

PWM Control of a DC Motor Used to Drive a Conveyor Belt

This work presents an experimental stand for the PWM control of a DC motor used for driving a conveyor belt. For supplying the DC motor an H-bridge has been used that allows the reversal of the motor rotation wise. The PWM signal is generated by an arduino UNO board, equipped with an Atmega 328 microcontroller. For controlling the arduino UNO board, a program has been issued in the LabVIEW 2013 programming environment. The purpose of the experimental stand consists of studying the running characteristics of the conveyor belts under laboratory conditions, so that, further on, such driving systems can be implemented to industrial applications as well. Unlike other driving systems of conveyor belts, this system allows the optimization, by trials, of their running duties. The running duty of a conveyor belt may be modified by modifying the duty-cycle value of the PWM signals that controls the transistors of the H-bridge that supplies the DC motor. The PWM control of the DC motor provides the performances settled at the designing stage.

The paper reports an Internet of Thing (IoT) based health monitoring and tracking system for soldiers. The proposed system can be mounted on the soldier's body to track their health status and current location using GPS. These information will be transmitted to the control room through IoT. The proposed system comprise of tiny wearable physiological equipment's, sensors, transmission modules. Hence, with the use of the proposed equipment, it is possible to implement a low cost mechanism to protect the valuable human life on the battlefield.

In this research, a multi-tasking protection and control device has been designed and implemented has the ability to control and manage automatically the supply of electrical power from various sources to electric appliances connected to the light loading line (3L). At the same time, providing comprehensive protection for the appliances by delaying the supply of power for short period of time during the moment of conversion from one source to other in order to protect it from damage. The mechanism working of the proposed device depends on detecting the problem, diagnosing it and choosing the appropriate solution for it, and then organizing the supply from the appropriate source, and as a result ensure power supply to home appliances.

The varying time weather conditions, and the nonlinearity of the characteristics of the PV influence its performance, and cause also the difficult maximum point power tracking (MPPT) process. In this paper, a system equipped with PV panel, control and power card has been analyzed and designed. The Power card is formed with voltage and current sensors, boost converter, and a driver which ensures the control of the Mosfet. The control card contains a Backstepping algorithm which needed for solving the nonlinear relation and draws the MPP from the PV panel. The simulation results show a great performance and improve a high efficiency with good accuracy. The developed system is designed in Isis Proteus, simulated in Matlab/Simulink, implemented and tested successfully on an arduino board with a graphical LabVIEW interface which allows us to visualize and interpret PV parameters in real time.

The outline and usage of a mobile phone worked metal detector is introduced in this paper. Presently days, metal recognizing framework are turning out to be imperative part in securing live and properties of regular citizen and military. This metal detector is connected on mobile phone worked vehicle. For this paper, the metal identifier worked in a way that the metal sensor (Colpitts oscillator) detects any electrically or metallic object conveyed near it. The metal indicator circuit creates a sound which can hear to the end client through the cell Phone. The vehicle comprises of arduino board, a L293D interface circuit, and an motor driving framework. The controlling electronics are associated with the arduino board. The arduino board sends signs to the interfacing board L293D that controls the motor driving framework. In the course of a call, if any button is pressed, a tone corresponding to the button pressed is heard at the other end of the call. This tone is called 'dual-tone multiple-frequency' (DTMF) tone. The vehicle perceives this DTMF tone with the help of the phone stacked in the vehicle.

There are various health parameters such as oxygen level, respiration patterns which needs to be monitored in order to ensure salubriousness of baby's health. Conventional approaches of baby monitoring does not efficiently provide real-time health parameter updates and requires constant monitoring of baby through the presence of parent. Now-a-days, both parents have to work outside which makes it difficult for them to take care of baby in person. Hence, modern technologies must be used in order to track health of infant and get updates in any unfavorable condition to the baby. In order to differentiate unfavorable condition from the normal condition, a threshold has to be set where parameters are captured in normal condition. If parameter exceeds from the threshold, parent is informed accordingly.

Road Divider is generically used for dividing the Road for ongoing and incoming traffic. This helps keeping the flow of traffic. Generally, there is equal number of lanes for both ongoing and incoming traffic. For example, in any city, there is industrial area or shopping area where the traffic generally flows in one direction in the morning or evening. The other side of Road divider is mostly either empty or under- utilized. This is true for peak morning and evening hours. This results in loss of time for the car owners, traffic jams as well as underutilization of available resources. Our idea is to formulate a mechanism of automated movable road divider that can shift lanes, so that we can have more number of lanes in the direction of the rush. The cumulative impact of the time and fuel that can be saved by adding even one extra lane to the direction of the rush will be significant. With the smart application proposed below, we will also eliminate the dependency on manual intervention and manual traffic coordination so that we can have a smarter traffic all over the city. An Automated movable road divider can provide a solution to the above-mentioned problem effectively. This is possible through IOT. IOT refers to Internet of Things where the actual digitalization comes into picture. Here sensors play a major role. We can achieve this using arduino board. The sensors placed on the dividers sense the flow of traffic whether flow of traffic is smooth or not? If the flow is smooth on either side then there is nothing to worry but the lane which is having more traffic, the divider is moved to a certain distance to the smoother lane in order to smoothen the busy lane.
