To minimize the occurrence of vehicle accidents due to an eye or hand movements while driving, an automatic vehicle human-voice-based safety control is proposed in this paper. The design is implemented using an arduino microcontroller. One of the most important safety control features is the automotive speed control(ASC). In this safety control function, which prevents a vehicle sudden hit, the necessary action is issued based on the vehicle-tovehicle distance measure. To prevent the driver from attention withdraw and maintain a proper road and situation focus(as especially is the case at night), several other automated safety control operations are provided(i.e., radio, flasher, left flasher, right flasher, wipers, drive, and stop). These features are controlled according to human voice commands using an Easy VR module. The proposed model has been designed, built, and tested providing suitable results as desired.

Close-in weapon systems (CIWS) are an essential, computer-controlled defensive measure available on modern warships. Due to their size and weight, however, CIWS are deployed only on warships with a displacement over 1000 tons. Smaller ships, such as patrol boats, still carry and use less accurate crew-controlled heavy machine guns. We propose a small, light-weight, and portable CIWS that can be easily installed onto smaller warships. The proposed CIWS incorporates automated target tracking to reduce errors that arise from manual operation. A prototype system, consisting of a stabilizing platform and a gun control unit, was designed and constructed for this research. The prototype incorporated sensors and microcontrollers to provide an automated target tracking capability. Two independent closed-loop controllers were implemented integrating inertial and vison-based sensors to provide automatic stabilization and tracking. A support structure for the prototype was fabricated using parts made with a three-dimensional printer. Through experimental measurement and simulations, performance of the prototype was evaluated and compared favorably with that of existing CIWS systems; however, during the course of this work, we found that several improvements would be required to make the proposed portable CIWS a viable solution. The work highlighted the need for an upgraded inertial sensor, motor gear assemblies that have much less backlash, and stronger supporting structure.

An arduino-based interactive tool for pain education: a pilot study

As occurs with many other topics of pain curricula, lectures on pain neurophysiology are predominantly theoretical, and the practical experiences required to deliver that content to learners can be problematic regarding sustainability, logistics, and funding. Therefore, this study presents the development and testing of a microcontroller-based interactive tool to assist university-level pain neurophysiology teaching and facilitate a hands-on approach to exploring the functional connectivity of pain pathways. The proposed system consists of a sensing module that conveys electrical signals elicited by thermal and mechanical stimuli to an arduino Nano board. The latter acts as a processing module and contains a codified version of a Neuroid-based network model of the pain circuitry. Our prototype was tested during a lecture on pain neurophysiology attended by forty-seven undergraduate health sciences students, who were instructed to observe the neural responses to sensory stimulation while altering the pain circuitry's excitatory-inhibitory balance. We collected participants' opinions via a 3-point Likert-type scale with seventeen questions regarding the tool's composition, appropriateness, and theoretical foundation. Besides allowing students to explore the functional connectivity of pain pathways without the limitations posed by in-vivo or in-vitro models, the proposed tool achieved overall positive feedback among the surveyed.

Automatic Water Control System and Environment Sensors in a Greenhouse

Iraqi greenhouses require an active microcontroller system to ensure a suitable microclimate for crop production. At the same time, reliable and timely Water Consumption Rate (WCR) forecasts provide an essential means to reduce the amount of water loss and maintain the environmental conditions inside the greenhouses. The arduino micro-controller system is tested to determine its effectiveness in controlling the WCR, Temperature (T), Relative Humidity (RH), and Irrigation Time (IT) levels and improving plant growth rates. The arduino micro-controller system measurements are compared with the traditional methods to determine the quality of the work of the new control system. The development of mathematical models relies on T, RH, and IT indicators. Based on the results, the new system proves to reliably identify the amount of WCR, IT, T, and RH necessary for plant growth. A t-test for the values from the arduino microcontroller system and traditional devices for both conditions show no significant difference. This means that there is solid evidence that the WCR, IT, T, and RH levels for these two groups are no different. In addition, the linear, two-factor interaction (2FI), and quadratic models display acceptable performance very well since multiple coefficients of determination (R-2) reached 0.962, 0.969, and 0.977% with IT, T, and RH as the predictor variables. This implies that 96.9% of the variability in the WCR is explained by the model. Therefore, it is possible to predict weekly WCR 14 weeks in advance with reasonable accuracy.

An urban local body of our country has planned to establish innovative and affordable method of treating solid waste offsite. Current manual waste segregation method is still a challenge for the environmental sustainability and considering the fact a mechanical waste segregator is designed which can identify the type of waste and separate them using arduino microcontroller. The separated solid wastes are subjected to landfill and a review on landfill leachate management practice is presented in this paper. Then an enhanced Sequential Leach Bed-HUASB Reactor design is proposed for leachate treatment. The fabricated pilot scale model was functioning in the mesophilic state with pretreated solid waste as feed for ten different organic loading. The routine and real time monitoring of process control is based on plasma that depends on remote and onsite control. The materialization of devices is based on the Internet of Things (IoT) cloud, which is observed to be the emerging trend. By captivating the field data the devices are related to the process of mathematical calculation that plays significant role in transforming to the objects and are used to scrutinize turbidity, suspended solids, dissolved oxygen and COD using sensors, thereby managing the leachate for making Sustainable smart city development.

A low-cost spectrometer for NMR measurements in the Earth's magnetic field

We describe and demonstrate an inexpensive, easy-to-build, portable spectrometer for nuclear magnetic resonance measurements in the Earth's magnetic field. The spectrometer is based upon a widely available inexpensive microcontroller, which acts as a pulse programmer, audio-frequency synthesizer and digitizer, replacing what are typically the most expensive specialized components of the system. The microcontroller provides the capability to execute arbitrarily long and complicated sequences of phase-coherent, phase-modulated excitation pulses and acquire data sets of unlimited duration. Suitably packaged, the spectrometer is amenable to measurements in the research lab, in the field or in the teaching lab. The choice of components was heavily weighted by cost and availability, but required no significant sacrifice in performance. Using an existing personal computer, the resulting design can be assembled for as little as US$200. The spectrometer performance is demonstrated with spin-echo and Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill pulse sequences on a water sample.

Application of Low-Cost Sensors for Accurate Ambient Temperature Monitoring

In structures with reduced monitoring budgets, the high cost of commercial metering devices is always an obstacle for monitoring structural health. This might be an issue when temperatures must be measured for both structural and environmental reasons. To fill this gap, in this paper, a novel monitoring system is proposed for the accurate measurement of indoor temperature in buildings. This protocol is characterized by its generality, as it can be easily adapted to measure any structural or environmental parameters on site. The proposed monitoring system uses from one to eight low-cost sensors to obtain multiple measurements of the ambient temperatures. The accuracy ranges of the developed monitoring systems with different numbers of sensors are statistically analysed. The results indicate that the discrepancy of the measurements decreases with the increase in the number of sensors, as the maximum standard deviation of 10 sensors (0.42) decreases to 0.32 and 0.27 for clusters of 20 and 30 sensors, respectively.

Development of UV/Persulfate based laboratory-scale continuous-flow leachate treatment system

Stabilized landfill leachates (SLL) contain a high concentration of biorecalcitrant substances. Conventional biological-based water treatment methods are often inefficient in the treatment of SLL. In this study, a laboratory-scale automated continuous flow leachate treatment system was developed to study the feasibility of combining coagulation-flocculation and a sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation process (UVactivated persulfate) in the treatment of SLL. SLL was first treated with coagulation- flocculation. Subsequently, the pre-treated leachate was filtered through a sand filter into an ammonia-stripping tank and a flow-through UV purifier. Ammonia stripping and the UV-activated persulfate advanced oxidation process were performed simultaneously to remove ammonium ions and dissolved organic matter from the pre-treated SLL. The treated SLL was then passed through an anion exchange column for sulfate ion removal. The results showed that this system reduced chemical oxygen demand and total organic carbon concentrations by 91 and 90%, respectively. Further, 68% of ammoniacal nitrogen was removed. The color and turbidity of the SLL were removed entirely, and the system removed 70 to 98% of the metals commonly contained in SLLs. The phytotoxicity and ecotoxicity of the SLL were also largely reduced. The results confirmed that the developed continuous flow leachate treatment system could efficiently reduce the color, chemical oxygen demand, total organic carbon, metals, ammoniacal nitrogen, and the toxicity of SLL. A vision guided robotic system for flexible gluing process in the footwear industry

This paper presents a novel gluing machine comprising a Cartesian robot and a vision system. The vision system enables the location and reconstruction of the shape of objects to be glued;the detected information is then used to plan the trajectory of the robot whose end-effector is a glue gun and to move the robot with an error suitable to industrial gluing operations. A calibration procedure that enables transforming coordinates between the robot frame and the vision system frame is described. The calibration considers several mechanical inaccuracies and its effectiveness was evaluated using error maps. In particular, the paper examines objects to be glued along their edges, as frequently occurs for fabrics, leathers, and shoe soles. For this, two procedures to plan the trajectories of the robot are proposed: the first is for objects that can be treated as flat 2D objects, that is, their height variation is negligible;the second procedure is for 3D objects, that is, those with significant height variation. Several applicative examples are reported to highlight the flexibility of the gluing process.

Low-Cost Automated PV Panel Dust Cleaning System for Rural Communities

Dust accumulation on photovoltaic (PV) panels degrades PV panels’ performance;leading to decreased power output and consequently high cost per generated kilowatt. Research addressing the severity of dust accumulation on PV panels has been ongoing since the 1940s, but proposed solutions have tended to increase the cost of PV systems either from oversizing or from cleaning the system. The objective of this work, therefore, is to design and implement a low-cost affordable automated PV panel dust cleaning system for use in rural communities of Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA);where financial resources are limited and significantly strained in meeting livelihood activities. Complete design and implementation details of a prototype system are provided for easy replication and capitalization on PV systems for sustainable energy needs. The system detects dust based on the innovative use of light-dependent resistors. Testing and observation of the system in operational mode reveal satisfactory performance;measured parameters quantify a power output increase of 33.76% as a result of cleaning dust off the PV panel used in the study.
