Case Study: Monitoring of AIR Quality in King Faisal University Using a microcontroller and WSN

Wireless sensor network (WSN) enhanced the process of monitoring many environmental phenomena such as the air pollution monitoring issue in proposed this paper. In this paper, a WSN based microcontroller equipped with gas sensors have been actively used for air quality monitoring. The design included several units mainly: arduino microcontroller, MQ-2 Gas Sensors, and the current regulator circuit. Based on the normal gas levels of the clean air, the obtained results indicate that there is a big difference in the gas levels of both gases (LPG and CO) which obtained from the several tests and circuit runs. However, the acquired results for the air quality control inside the KFU buildings show no risky situation to be considered for further actions. This work will apply the electrical engineering techniques as well as environmental engineering knowledge by using wireless sensor networks to measure Air Quality Parameters such as Carbon Monoxide (CO) and Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG).

Mobile robot navigation in unknown static environments using ANFIS controller

Navigation and obstacle avoidance are the most important task for any mobile robots. This article presents the Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) controller for mobile robot navigation and obstacle avoidance in the unknown static environments. The different sensors such as ultrasonic range finder sensor and sharp infrared range sensor are used to detect the forward obstacles in the environments. The inputs of the ANFIS controller are obstacle distances obtained from the sensors, and the controller output is a robot steering angle. The primary objective of the present work is to use ANFIS controller to guide the mobile robot in the given environments. Computer simulations are conducted through MATLAB software and implemented in real time by using C/C++ language running arduino microcontroller based mobile robot. Moreover, the successful experimental results on the actual mobile robot demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed controller.

A multi-functional BCI system for exigency assistance and environment control based on ML and IoT

Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) is a modality to create an interface which sustains bidirectional communication between the brain and computers. Major disadvantages in implementing such systems are the bulky design and system cost. This study implements a simple multifunction BCI system for the environment control and exigency assistance by just using single channel Electroencephalogram (EEG). In the proposed model, the environment is controlled through Internet of Things (IoT) as per individual's cognitive state while for exigency assistance served as per Event Related Potential (ERP) observed during oddball paradigm. arduino microcontroller (AMC) hardware is designed for controlling environment. Different Machine Learning (ML) algorithms observed for training the classifiers. Weighted k-Nearest Neighbour (Wk-NN) algorithm trained classifier delivers the best result, with accuracy of 98.3% to detect ERP and 95% accuracy for cognitive state detection. The simple, low cost prototype system was tested for environment control and assistance.

Tangential flow filtration (TFF) is a chemical unit operation used to purify and concentrate liquid suspensions of colloids, proteins, or cells. The solution flows tangentially across a membrane, such that a selective part of the fluid permeates the membrane while the filtrated matter is retained, increasing its concentration. TFF is a mild mechanical purification method that does not interact chemically with the filtrate. It is applied in sensitive separation tasks in protein chemistry, microbiology, or immunology. It is a fast alternative for dialysis applications, also applicable in the field of colloid purification. However, the costs of automated lab-scale devices (30,000 (sic)) and the consumable membrane modules (100-600 (sic)) make TFF currently hardly accessible for lab-scale polymer researchers. Therefore, we built a low-cost TFF system (2400 (sic)) partly automated by an arduino microcontroller and optimized for diafiltration buffer exchange and concentration processes in soft matter colloid research. We use medical hemodialysis membrane modules that only cost a share (20-50 (sic)) of alternative TFF modules, and we demonstrate the functionality of the system for an exemplary colloidal microgel purification process. Comprehensive and Simulated Modeling of a Centralized Transport Robot Control System

This work proposes a new simulation model for a centralized transport robot control system that was created with the AnyLogic environment and a special blend of agent-based and discrete-event approaches. The model attempts to do a comprehensive analysis of the centralized request distribution algorithm among robots, gauging the effectiveness of the transport system based on service arrival times. For in-depth testing, a transport robot model was developed using arduino microcontrollers and NRF24L01 transceivers for communication. Item movement test sequences were created to be uniform in both full-scale and simulation testing. Good, though not perfect, agreement was found between the simulation and experimental results, underscoring the difficulty of obtaining high accuracy in real-time coordinate identification in the absence of sensors. This shortcoming notwithstanding, the novel simulation model provides an invaluable instrument for determining the viability and efficiency of transportation systems as well as analyzing decentralized control mechanisms prior to actual deployment. The novelty of this paper in that it builds a thorough simulation model for a centralized transport robot control system using an AnyLogic environment and a unique blend of discrete-event and agent-based approaches. This comprehensive technique is a novel contribution to the discipline since it enables a thorough evaluation of a centralized request distribution system.

OMIS: The Open Millifluidic Inquiry System for small scale chemical synthesis and analysis

With the continued establishment of hacker-spaces and fab-labs hosted in academic libraries, there is an increase in the availability of resources for designing scientific instrumentation in the undergraduate curriculum. Many available designs, however, may be too complex to fabricate in teaching environments. Presented here is OMIS, the Open Millifluidic Inquiry System, which is a platform for performing small-scale chemical synthesis and analysis. OMIS consists of a 3D printed syringe pump, control hardware based upon the arduino microcontroller and 3D printed reaction vessels. The OMIS syringe pump utilizes a low-power stepper motor which simplifies the instrument construction and allows for power to be supplied from batteries or the USB port of a computer. The simple design of OMIS allows for the instrument to be fabricated in one day, including the time to 3D print components. The OMIS syringe pump is able to deliver fluids at rates between 60 and 300 mu L/min, depending on syringe size, with a reproducibility of 3%. Several applications of OMIS are presented, including a demonstration of laminar flow in a 3D printed millifluidic chip, implementation of a low-volume flow-cell cuvette insert and the synthesis of magnetite nanoparticles. In this article, the data structure and simulation of the centralized control system for transport robots is implemented. In the simulation transporting a definite number of products using a group of robots is performed. The purpose is to reduce the total waiting time during the transportation process. The crucial issue to be considered is implementing the most sensible and effective way to assign tasks to individual robots. We present a solution for products transportation using multiple robots with the centralized control system. Our approach has been performed and established in simulation using the AnyLogic environment and implemented the transport robot model based on arduino microcontroller using centralized control system.

An Advanced First Aid System Based on an Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and a Wireless Body Area Sensor Network for Elderly Persons in Outdoor Environments

For elderly persons, a fall can cause serious injuries such as a hip fracture or head injury. Here, an advanced first aid system is proposed for monitoring elderly patients with heart conditions that puts them at risk of falling and for providing first aid supplies using an unmanned aerial vehicle. A hybridized fall detection algorithm (FDB-HRT) is proposed based on a combination of acceleration and a heart rate threshold. Five volunteers were invited to evaluate the performance of the heartbeat sensor relative to a benchmark device, and the extracted data was validated using statistical analysis. In addition, the accuracy of fall detections and the recorded locations of fall incidents were validated. The proposed FDB-HRT algorithm was 99.16% and 99.2% accurate with regard to heart rate measurement and fall detection, respectively. In addition, the geolocation error of patient fall incidents based on a GPS module was evaluated by mean absolute error analysis for 17 different locations in three cities in Iraq. Mean absolute error was 1.08 x 10(-5)degrees and 2.01 x 10(-5)degrees for latitude and longitude data relative to data from the GPS Benchmark system. In addition, the results revealed that in urban areas, the UAV succeeded in all missions and arrived at the patient's locations before the ambulance, with an average time savings of 105 s. Moreover, a time saving of 31.81% was achieved when using the UAV to transport a first aid kit to the patient compared to an ambulance. As a result, we can conclude that when compared to delivering first aid via ambulance, our design greatly reduces delivery time. The proposed advanced first aid system outperformed previous systems presented in the literature in terms of accuracy of heart rate measurement, fall detection, and information messages and UAV arrival time.

In this paper, a smart stick is intended and executed to aid blind persons so that they can walk independently without much difficulty. Firstly, pothole detection and avoidance system are implemented by setting the ultrasonic sensor at 30-degree angle on a suitable blind stick to sense if there is a hole or staircase in front of the blind at about 30 cm distance to avoid a person from falling and as a result may be producing many damages. Secondly, a moisture sensor is placed at the down of stick to measure the degree of water land soil moisture in forward-facing of the user and aware him as soon as that degree exceeds a measured level that may submerge the foot of him. Thirdly, knee above obstacle detection and avoidance system is implemented by using an additional ultrasonic sensor on the top of the stick to turn an alarm and vibration ON when there is a person, obstacle or wall at a distance of 50 cm in front to avoid an accident and thus helping the person to move independently. Fourthly, an ultrasonic sensor is placed down the stick at about 20 cm from the ground level to detect and avoid knee below obstacles and stairs at a distance of 70 cm in front of the user. Fifthly, a wireless remote consisting of RF modules (transmitter and receiver) is implemented, so if a person drops stick or forget it somewhere, he can press a switch of the remote consisting of transmitter part, and as a result alarm with vibrations will turn on, so the user can know the location of the stick. The stick is implemented practically using single wheel leg blinding cane, arduino microcontroller three ultrasonic sensors RF modules. Also, two buzzers and two vibration motor are used on the stick to fit on when any difficulties occur.

Olfaction, according to modern research, has not yet been classified based on its known properties. Unlike the sense of taste and sight, the sense of smell does not have any known dimensions of category. Modern technologies of Electronic nose (E-nose) systems were used in analyzing smells. This study aimed to categorize different clusters of smell and differentiate their levels of reaction to an E-nose system comprising of different sensors. MQ - Metal-Oxide semiconductor gas sensors were used coupled with artificial neural network (ANN) using MATLAB to evaluate the systems capability of discrimination. Interfacing was done using arduino microcontroller for communication. MQ5 Gas sensor gave the most variance. This result confirmed that the system's ability to be used in future applications was suggested.
