Development of a Low-cost Ultrasonic Sensor for Groundwater Monitoring in Coastal Environments: Validation using Field and Laboratory Observations

This study presents the development and validation of a low-cost ultrasonic sensor (HCSR 04), coupled to an open source arduino microcontroller platform, for groundwater monitoring in coastal environments. Given the fact that low-lying coastal zones are regions naturally prone to flooding (due to oceanic forcing and pluviosity) and densely occupied, monitoring groundwater variations is crucial for the management of flood-related events. A groundwater monitoring well was built, (made of a PVC pipe with 100 mm in diameter and 2 m long) and installed on the ground of a dune field, located in Cassino beach, southern of Brazil. The system was deployed for 84 consecutive days and programmed to perform water level measurements every 10 min. In laboratory, three units with the same hardware setup of the unit installed in the field (ultrasonic sensor coupled to the arduino microcontroller) were installed on a 20 liter graduated PVC tube. Varying water levels were tested in the laboratory along the time (changing 1 cm every 2 minutes during 4 hours) in order to reproduce the synthetic signal. Eighty measurements were obtained for each sensor, a total of 240 for each validation process. For the laboratory validation, the results for nonparametric statistical tests (Kruskal and Wallis, and Dunn) presented a correlation of 99%, with Root mean square error (RMSE) 0.4113 and bias 0.0418. For the field tests, 3262 data collected by an ultrasonic sensor during 240 hours showed a means registration of 0.543 m. The minimum and maximum cataloged is 0.40 and 0.70 m, respectively, with 0.1076 m of standard deviation. Groundwater classical measurements, using a measuring tape, showed a mean and standard deviation of 0.544 and 0.1069 m, respectively. These preliminary tests showed that the developed monitoring system performs observations with an accuracy and precision within standard methods, therefore can be applied to monitoring changes in the level of groundwater.

This paper proposes an optimal robot path planning system that can build map, plan optimal paths, and maneuver mobile robots. The system constructs a grid-based map by using information on the locations of the origin and static obstacles. The system calculates the optimal trajectory by using a simplified neural network model and accordingly maneuvers a mobile robot. For dynamic obstacles, the mobile robot can sense the ambient environment and avoid possible collisions. A practical experiment using an arduino-based platform was conducted to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology.

This paper presents the application of intelligent techniques to control an industrial mixer. Control design is based on hebbian evolution of fuzzy cognitive maps. In this context, this paper develops a dynamical fuzzy cognitive map (D-FCM) based on Hebbian Learning algorithms. Two strategies to update FCM weights are derived. Finally, the D-FCM is used to control an industrial mixer. Simulation results of this control are presented. Additionally, results are provided extending some of the algorithms into the arduino platform in order to acknowledge the performance of the codes reported in this paper.

The ASURO project is presented, the used hardware devices and software development tools, methodologies and technologies are described. The aim of the project is to create algorithms and software modules for controlling Arexx robots. Two robot types are considered, the ARX-03 ASURO and the AAR-04 ASURINO robot. The AAR-04 robot is the improved version of ARX-03, with arduino platform, which makes the development of software modules much easier. In the framework of the presented project the robots are extended with special hardware modules (sensors and Bluetooth communication modules). The project contains an Android mobile application, which provides the user interface for controlling the robots. The robots are equipped with a WiFi camera, the camera image can be visualized in real time with the mobile application, together with sensor information. The robots can be controlled by rotating the mobile device or with virtual buttons on the display.

More and more devices are nowadays connected all over the world creating a complex grid that generates large volume of data. This is enhanced by various smart metering applications that collect, process, analyze heterogeneous data sets and extract valuable information to their owners. Apart from conventional energy meters that provides only monthly feedback regarding the total consumption, smart meters allow shorter time intervals readings, implementation of advanced tariff scheme, less effort regarding physical reading and other benefits for grid operators and electricity consumers. In this paper we propose an architecture that includes several acquisition data protocols, data integration in relational and NoSQL databases, business intelligence solution and cloud computing that offer more information regarding electricity consumption for individual appliances. Based on these features, consumers will be able to analyze the efficiency of particular appliances or group of appliances for cooling, illumination, ventilation and so and to identify obsolete appliances that should be replaced. They could also rapidly identify interruptions, spikes or other abnormal operation by notifications and alerts. This way smart meters activate the electricity consumers' behavior by stimulating energy awareness and savings. Cloud computing provides capabilities for smart grid platforms in storage, analysis, and applications (elastic resources, shared services, energy management), and addresses some challenges and opportunities of smart grid. We will also propose an alternative, cheaper and more flexible smart meter built on an arduino platform that could bring more data and information than a smart meter.

This system is mainly based on two techniques, CNC machine and 3D printing. 2D plotter is used for drawing circuits on any surface like paper, cardboard as per the user requirement and conductive ink or marker is used as an object for drawing circuits. Conductive marker is placed in such a way that it can be moved in x and y direction using stepper motor and in up and down direction using servo motor. arduino Uno or mega and CNC shield is used to drive motors. Benbox software is used to generate G-code and give input image of drawn circuit to the plotter. The research work is focused on a low cost and simple controlling system for 2D plotter machines to draw electronic circuit diagrams of PCBs on any surface.

After the damages of the cervical-thoracic spine and hand nerves, the motor and/or sensory functions are impaired, especially fine motor skills of each finger individually or a group of fingers. In the paper is proposed a method of constructing a "green zone" (optimal for patient training mode), and "red zone" (dangerous training mode), which correspond to the model of quantitative dependence the time fulfill several sequential actions patient based on the moving average. A decrease of muscle spasticity of the arm in scores following the Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS) was used as a criterion of optimality. For medical studies and training the diagnostic and training (DT) devices of the "Reflex-Txx" series were developed, which has in-built Hall sensors or touch sensors. The results of each individual's training are accumulated, displayed and analyzed on the microservices of the developed hardware and software complex and available on the user's gadgets. The electronic components and architecture of the developed devices based on a cost-effective arduino platform hardware implementation.

This paper describes the development of an IoT Physical Rehabilitation solution based on Smart Walkers. Multimodal sensing solution including IMU, Load Cells and Ultrasound sensor was designed and implemented. The smart walker is characterized by arduino Mega computation platform that performs the calculation of walking metrics during a rehabilitation session and stores them in the cloud. The data analysis and data visualization is supported by an implemented website and mobile app. Experimental results performed with healthy volunteers and appropriate data analysis are included in the paper.

Congestion of vehicular traffic in the cities with the highest population density results into a high amount of accidents and also to imminent road violence above average. Facing this problem, our study intends to implement a low-cost Internet of Thing proposal, in order to monitor and analyze traffic circulation and provide solutions to reduce the above mentioned negative effects. To fulfill such proposal, a system of low-cost wireless monitoring has been designed and developed, which is supported on a distributed multilayer model. This system interacts with a device consisting of two electronic arduino platforms, which themselves interact in master-slave mode having a distance sensor based on laser for detection of vehicles. The latter has the ability to connect to the Internet transmitting in real-time data taken by HTTP requests over the cellular network. On the data collected an engine for data mining is mounted in order to receive information about the traffic on highways and subsequently proposing potential solutions. The proof of concept has been applied in the city of Quito. There, on over their two central lanes of the Simon Bolivar Avenue such kind of solutions have been applied with positive results, both in the operation of the software and hardware that compose the prototype, as well as in reference measurements of traffic. Based on our findings, the system manages to suggest extrapolations, which enables to reduce traffic congestion, fuel waste, and also air pollution.
