Embedded block coding with optimized truncation (EBCOT) is a key algorithm in JPEG 2000 image compression system. In this algorithm, output generated by the bit plane coder (BPC) is supplied to an MQ coder. Though several high speed BPC architectures are available, overall performance EBCOT algorithm is getting restricted by the speed of an MQ coder. Therefore, we propose a high speed, area efficient VLSI architecture for an M:Q coder. This pipelined design is implemented on Startix series FPGA and it operates at 153 MHz. The synthesis report demonstrates that as compared to existing designs, the requirement of logic- and memory- elements is reduced by about 71.53% and 59.3%, respectively. Throughput of the proposed MQ coder is 137.7 MS/s which is 1.85 times higher compared to the designs reported. The renormalization module is capable of operating at 326 MHz. So, coding efficiency can further be improved by using multiple clock domains.

In this paper, a design of high throughput VLSI architecture of MQ-Coder is proposed. Usually, because the regular operation of the MQ-Coder is sequential, the coding speed will be bottlenecked at the interface between the output of the bit-plane coding and the input of the MQ-Coder. Therefore, the proposed MQ-Coder architecture can process two symbols for each clock cycle. The main characteristics are the prediction of index, the simplified condition of renormalization, and the partly parallel architecture in renormalization. From synthesis results of the DC tools, using the TSMC 0.18 mu m technology library, the frequency can reach 285.4MHz, which is comparable to that of other architectures and suitable for chip implementation.

Embedded block coding with optimized truncation (EBCOT) is a key algorithm in JPEG 2000 image compression system. Recently, the bit-plane coder architectures are capable of producing symbols at a higher rate than the capability of the existing MQ arithmetic coders. To solve this problem, a design of a multiple-symbol processor for statistical MQ coder architecture on FPGA is proposed. The proposed architecture takes advantage of simplicity of single-symbol architecture while integrates several techniques in order to increase the coding rate (more than one symbol per clock), reduce critical path, thus accelerate the coding speed. The repeated symbol statistics has been analyzed prior to the proposed architecture using lookahead technique. This allows the proposed architecture to support encoding rate of maximum 8 symbols per clock cycle without stalls and without excessively increasing the hardware cost. This helps to accelerate encoding process, which leads to greatly increase throughput. From the experiments, for lossy wavelet transform, the proposed architecture offers high throughput of at least 233.07 MCxD/S with effectively reducing the number of clock cycles more than 35.51%.

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá srovnáním formátů pro ztrátovou kompresi obrazu. Kapitoly práce popisují principy komprese obrazu a samotné ztrátové formáty. Konkrétně se jedná o ztrátové formáty JPEG, JPEG 2000, JPEG XR a WebP. Práce zahrnuje teoretické srovnání výše zmíněných formátů spolu s metodami, které se používají pro měření kvality obrazu. Praktická část obsahuje výsledky měření kvality jednotlivých formátů a popis návrhu společně s implementací výukového programu.

This work presents a parallel context-modeling coding architecture and a matching arithmetic coder (MQ-coder) for the embedded block coding (EBCOT) unit of the JPEG2000 encoder. Tier-1 of the EBCOT consumes most of the computation time in a JPEG2000 encoding system. The proposed parallel architecture can increase the throughput rate of the context modeling. To match the high throughput rate of the parallel context-modeling architecture, an efficient pipelined architecture for context-based adaptive arithmetic encoder is proposed. This encoder of JPEG2000 can work at 180 MHz to encode one symbol each cycle. Compared with the previous context-modeling architectures, our parallel architectures can improve the throughput rate up to 25%.
