In joint source-channel arithmetic coding, a forbidden symbol (FS) is added to the symbol set to make it more robust against transmission errors. By splitting the interval occupied by the FS into subintervals, various configurations are possible. In this paper, the delay probability function (DPF), the probability of the number of bits required to detect an error, is calculated for various FS configurations. A figure of merit is also proposed for optimizing the FS configuration. It determines the probability of missed error detection (PMD). Simulations are carried out by employing a breadth-first suboptimal sequential MAP. The simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed figure of merit, and support the FS configuration in which the FS interval lies entirely between the other information carrying symbols to be the best.

Modern fingerprint image compression and reconstruction standards used by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) are based upon the popular 9/7 discrete wavelet transform. Multiresolution analysis tools have been successfully applied for fingerprint image compression for more than a decade;we propose a novel fingerprint image compression technique based on recently proposed wave atoms decomposition. Wave atoms decomposition has specifically been designed for enhanced representation of oscillatory patterns to convey temporal and spatial information. Our proposed compression scheme is based upon linear vector quantization of decomposed wave atoms representation of fingerprint images. Later quantized information is encoded with arithmetic entropy scheme. The proposed image compression standard outperforms the FBI fingerprint image compression standard, the wavelet scalar quantization (WSQ). Data mining, law enforcement, border security, and forensic applications can potentially benefit from our proposed compression scheme.

Image compression has a number of applications in various fields, where processing throughput and/or latency is a crucial attribute and the main limitation of state-of-the-art implementations of compression algorithms. At the same time contemporary GPU platforms provide tremendous processing power but they call for specific algorithm design. We discuss key components of successful design of compression algorithms for GPUs and demonstrate this on JPEG and JPEG2000 implementations, each of which contains several types of algorithms requiring different approaches to efficient parallelization for GPUs. Performance evaluation of the optimized JPEG and JPEG2000 chain is used to demonstrate the importance of various aspects of GPU programming, especially with respect to real-time applications

Conventionally in SCADA based system used in power system, voltage & frequency is monitored sequentially at regular intervals by employing suitable communication schemes. By suitable data compression techniques, it is possible to compress the measured voltage & frequency data to a reduced single string which is then transmitted to monitoring / control room. At the receiving end, the necessary data can be extracted from the transmitted string by using the respective decompression technique. A MATLAB based system is developed which can produce the compressed string corresponds to input voltage & frequency which can be decoded to obtain the voltage & frequency at the receiving end.

Embedded block coding with optimized truncation (EBCOT) employed in the JPEG2000 standard accounts for the majority of the processing time, because the EBCOT is full of bit operations that cannot be implemented efficiently in software. The block coder consists of a bit-plane coder (BPC) followed by a binary arithmetic coder (BAC), where the most up-to-date BPC architectures are capable of producing symbols at a much higher rate than the conventional BACs can handle. This paper proposes a novel pipelined BAC architecture that can encode input symbols at a much higher rate than the conventional BAC architectures. The proposed architecture can significantly reduce the critical path delay and can achieve a throughput of 400 M symbols/sec. The critical path delay synthesized with 0.18-mu m CMOS technology is 2.42 ns, which is almost half of the delay taken in conventional BAC architectures.

To address the increasing demand for higher resolution and frame rates, processing speed (i.e. performance) and area cost need to be considered in the development of next generation video coding. Accordingly, both algorithm and architecture should be taken into account during video codec design. This paper proposes joint optimization of both the algorithm and architecture to ensure that high coding efficiency can be achieved in conjunction with high processing speed and low area cost. Specifically, it presents two optimizations that can be performed on Context-based Adaptive Binary arithmetic coding (CABAC), a form of entropy coding in H.264/AVC. First, subinterval reordering is proposed for the arithmetic decoder to increase the processing speed by 14 to 22% with no cost to coding efficiency. Second, modification of the motion vector difference (mvd) context selection is proposed to reduce memory requirements (i.e. area cost) by 50% with negligible coding efficiency impact (<= 0.02%). These joint algorithm and architecture optimizations are non-standard compliant and thus are well suited to be used in High Efficiency Video coding (HEVC), the successor to H.264/AVC.

With the development of integrated circuit technology, the scale of Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) devices and the quantity of on-chip resources have been increased dramatically, as well as the size of configuration files, rendering the configuration process time-consuming. Especially, in the cloud-based multiple FPGAs co-designs, the transmission of large scale bitstream configuration files in public networks may suffer unpredictable delay, which causes circuits with high real-time requirements failed to be timely executed. To address this challenge, we divide a configuration file into three portions which have different data structures, and different compression methods are proposed to fit the data structure of each part to obtain a lower compression rate. For the portion which describes the FPGA on-chip resources, an LSTM and ID-CNN based arithmetic coding compression method is introduced. In this way, the compression problem is converted to an estimation of a conditional probability distribution problem. Finally, to improve the prediction efficiency of the neural network, a cache based neural network inference acceleration method is proposed. Our approach is validated on the standard benchmark data sets and the average compression rate is 28.89%. Compared with seven different compression methods, our approach improves the compression rate by up to 39.45%.

Direct encryption for the JPEG2000 code-streams by using a conventional block cipher needs an additional processing time, whereas the joint compression and encryption schemes increase the coding efficiency but with some sacrifices in security. In this paper, a Dually Randomized MQ coder (DRMQ) is presented to support both compression and encryption functionalities, and to achieve tradeoff between security and efficiency. The proposed DRMQ coder avoids the permutations of input/output bits to enhance security. It makes use of a dual randomization to provide more protected results. Furthermore, we show that the DRMQ coder can be combined with a format compliant header encryption algorithm to achieve a fast and full protection of JPEG2000 code-streams. The experimental results confirm the efficiency and encryption performance of our scheme.

In this paper, we present a joint source channel decoding technique for CABAC encoded data based on sequential decoding. The proposed method is developed to be compatible with CABAC features, i.e., handling binary arithmetic coding, adaptive probabilities, and context modeling. Redundancy due to the binarization step is exploited and no extra redundancy is compulsory. An hypothesis test allowing to adjust the trade-off between decoding complexity and error resilience performances is proposed. Simulation results show that our method outperforms those using classical sequential algorithms.

This paper presents a novel data hiding using Integer Wavelet Transform (IWT) through lifting scheme that aims to achieve high quality of stego image. This method transforms a spatial domain cover image into a frequency domain cover image. It hides the secret message into detail coefficients (CH, CV, CD) of IWT by construct a binary image in any of selected bit in CH, CV, CD separately and compresses that bit by using arithmetic coding. This method is very simple and effective.
