Near-field wideband source localisation from the sparse recovery perspective via the spatial-only modelling of array data

This study presents an efficient algorithm for near-field wideband source localisation. By exploring the characters of spatial-only modelling for near-field wideband array output, the authors firstly construct a virtual array output in which the virtual direction matrix is free of frequency and only related to bearing and range. Then, they exploit the symmetrical property of a uniform linear array to build a special measurement vector merely corresponding to the bearing, and obtain the related estimates via -norm optimisation solution. By substituting the estimated bearings and vectoring the spatial covariance matrix, they obtain range estimates through a similar sparse signal reconstruction approach without a parameter pairing process. Compared with previous methods, the proposed algorithm avoids performance degradation caused by frequency decomposition and provides improved resolution and preferable robustness to noise. Numerical simulations are conducted to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed algorithm.

Identification and classification of transient pulses observed in magnetometer array data by time-domain principal component analysis filtering

A method for identification of pulsations in time series of magnetic field data which are simultaneously present in multiple channels of data at one or more sensor locations is described. Candidate pulsations of interest are first identified in geomagnetic time series by inspection. Time series of these ＂training events＂ are represented in matrix form and transpose-multiplied to generate time- domain covariance matrices. The ranked eigenvectors of this matrix are stored as a feature of the pulsation. In the second stage of the algorithm, a sliding window （approxi- mately the width of the training event） is moved across the vector-valued time-series comprising the channels on which the training event was observed. At each window position, the data covariance matrix and associated eigen- vectors are calculated. We compare the orientation of the dominant eigenvectors of the training data to those from the windowed data and flag windows where the dominant eigenvectors directions are similar. This was successful in automatically identifying pulses which share polarization and appear to be from the same source process. We apply the method to a case study of continuously sampled （50 Hz） data from six observatories, each equipped with three- component induction coil magnetometers. We examine a 90-day interval of data associated with a cluster of four observatories located within 50 km of Napa, California, together with two remote reference stations-one 100 km to the north of the cluster and the other 350 km south. When the training data contains signals present in the remote reference observatories, we are reliably able to identify and extract global geomagnetic signals such as solar-generated noise. When training data contains pulsations only observed in the cluster of local observatories, we identify several types of non-plane wave signals having similar polarization.

This paper provides an in-depth survey on the integration of machine learning and array databases. First,machine learning support in modern database management systems is introduced. From straightforward implementations of linear algebra operations in SQL to machine learning capabilities of specialized database managers designed to process specific types of data, a number of different approaches are overviewed. Then, the paper covers the database features already implemented in current machine learning systems. Features such as rewriting, compression, and caching allow users to implement more efficient machine learning applications. The underlying linear algebra computations in some of the most used machine learning algorithms are studied in order to determine which linear algebra operations should be efficiently implemented by array databases. An exhaustive overview of array data and relevant array database managers is also provided. Those database features that have been proven of special importance for efficient execution of machine learning algorithms are analyzed in detail for each relevant array database management system. Finally, current state of array databases capabilities for machine learning implementation is shown through two example implementations in Rasdaman and SciDB.

Micro-sensors are now integral part of many technologically advanced healthcare systems used in monitoring elderly people who have high risk of fall and other mobility problems. Some theories have been established that relate inconsistency in the gait phases of a person to the possibility of an imminent fall. Using these theories, a number of monitoring systems have been developed to detect and predict falls. Smart shoe is one such solution presented here. It consists of an array of pressure sensors in the shape of a foot. Available sensors in the market do not have pressure sensors customizable to specific requirements such as a fall study. In this research, an optimized layout of pressure sensors is developed for a smart-shoe fall monitoring application. The data from the foot pressure arrays for different activities such as walking, falling forward etc. are collected. data mining algorithms are then used to classify the fall types accurately and their performances are reported here.

Regression of exchangeable relational arrays

Relational arrays represent measures of association between pairs of actors, often in varied contexts or over time. Trade flows between countries, financial transactions between individuals, contact frequencies between school children in classrooms and dynamic protein-protein interactions are all examples of relational arrays. Elements of a relational array are often modelled as a linear function of observable covariates. Uncertainty estimates for regression coefficient estimators, and ideally the coefficient estimators themselves, must account for dependence between elements of the array, e.g., relations involving the same actor. Existing estimators of standard errors that recognize such relational dependence rely on estimating extremely complex, heterogeneous structure across actors. This paper develops a new class of parsimonious coefficient and standard error estimators for regressions of relational arrays. We leverage an exchangeability assumption to derive standard error estimators that pool information across actors, and are substantially more accurate than existing estimators in a variety of settings. This exchangeability assumption is pervasive in network and array models in the statistics literature, but not previously considered when adjusting for dependence in a regression setting with relational data. We demonstrate improvements in inference theoretically, via a simulation study, and by analysis of a dataset involving international trade.

Machine Learning is increasingly being applied to many different application domains. From cancer detection to weather forecast, a large number of different applications leverage machine learning algorithms to get faster and more accurate results over huge datasets. Although many of these datasets are mainly composed of array data, a vast majority of machine learning applications do not use array databases. This tutorial focuses on the integration of machine learning algorithms and array databases. By implementing machine learning algorithms in array databases users can boost the native efficient array data processing with machine learning methods to perform accurate and fast array data analytics.

Portable CPU implementation of Wilson, Brillouin and Susskind fermions in lattice QCD

A modern Fortran implementation of three Dirac operators (Wilson, Brillouin, Susskind) in lattice QCD is presented, based on OpenMP shared-memory parallelization and SIMD pragmas. The main idea is to apply a Dirac operator to Nv vectors simultaneously, to ease the memory bandwidth bottleneck. All index computations are left to the compiler and maximum weight is given to portability and flexibility. The lattice volume, NxNyNzNt, the number of colors, Nc, and the number of right-hand sides, Nv, are parameters defined at compile time. Several memory layout options are compared. The code performs well on modern many-core architectures (480 Gflop/s, 880 Gflop/s, and 780 Gflop/s with Nv = 12 for the three operators in single precision on a 72-core KNL processor, a 2 x 24-core Skylake node yields similar results). Integrated analysis of gene expression changes associated with coronary artery disease

Background: This study investigated the pathways and genes involved in coronary artery disease (CAD) and the associated mechanisms. Methods: Two array data sets of GSE19339 and GSE56885 were downloaded. The limma package was used to analyze the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in normal and CAD specimens. Examination of DEGs through Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment and Gene Ontology annotation was achieved by database for Annotation, Visualization and Integrated Discovery (DAVID). The Cytoscape software facilitated the establishment of the protein-protein interaction (PPI) network and Molecular Complex Detection (MCODE) was performed for the significant modules. Results: We identified 413 DEGs (291 up-regulated and 122 down-regulated). Approximately 256 biological processes, only 1 cellular component, and 21 molecular functions were identified by GO analysis and 10 pathways were enriched by KEGG. Moreover, 264 protein pairs and 64 nodes were visualized by the PPI network. After the MCODE analysis, the top 4 high degree genes, including interleukin 1 beta (IL1B, degree = 29), intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM1, degree = 25), Jun proto-oncogene (JUN, degree = 23) and C-C motif chemokine ligand 2 (CCL2, degree = 20) had been identified to validate in RT-PCR and Cox proportional hazards regression between CAD and normals. Conclusions: The relative expression of IL1B, ICAM1 and CCL2 was higher in CAD than in normal controls (P < 0.05-0. 001), but only IL1B and CCL2 genes were confirmed after testing the gene expression in blood and/or analyzing in Cox proportional hazards regression (P < 0.05-0.001), and the proper mechanism may involve in the AGE-RAGE signaling pathway, fluid shear stress, the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) and cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction.
