A systematic review of comparative evidence of aspect-oriented programming

Context: aspect-oriented programming (AOP) promises to improve many facets of software quality by providing better modularization and separation of concerns, which may have system wide affect. There have been numerous claims in favor and against AOP compared with traditional programming languages such as Objective oriented and Structured programming Languages. However, there has been no attempt to systematically review and report the available evidence in the literature to support the claims made in favor or against AOP compared with non-AOP approaches. Objective: This research aimed to systematically identify, analyze, and report the evidence published in the literature to support the claims made in favor or against AOP compared with non-AOP approaches. Method: We performed a systematic literature review of empirical studies of AOP based development, published in major software engineering journals and conference proceedings. Results: Our search strategy identified 3307 papers, of which 22 were identified as reporting empirical studies comparing AOP with non-AOP approaches. Based on the analysis of the data extracted from those 22 papers, our findings show that for performance, code size, modularity, and evolution related characteristics, a majority of the studies reported positive effects, a few studies reported insignificant effects, and no study reported negative effects;however, for cognition and language mechanism, negative effects were reported. Conclusion: AOP is likely to have positive effect on performance, code size, modularity, and evolution. However its effect on cognition and language mechanism is less likely to be positive. Care should be taken using AOP outside the context in which it has been validated. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Cytokines, low-molecular-weight messenger proteins that act as intercellular immunomodulatory signals, have become a mainstream preclinical marker for assessing the systemic inflammatory response to external stressors. The challenge is to quantitate from healthy subjects cytokine levels that are below or at baseline and relate those dynamic and complex cytokine signatures of exposures with the inflammatory and repair pathways. Thus, highly sensitive, specific, and precise analytical and statistical methods are critically important. Investigators at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have implemented advanced technologies and developed statistics for evaluating panels of inflammatory cytokines in human blood, exhaled breath condensate, urine samples, and murine biological media. Advanced multiplex, bead-based, and automated analytical platforms provided sufficient sensitivity, precision, and accuracy over the traditional enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Thus, baseline cytokine levels can be quantified from healthy human subjects and animals and compared to an in vivo exposure response from an environmental chemical. Specifically, patterns of cytokine responses in humans exposed to environmental levels of ozone and diesel exhaust, and in rodents exposed to selected pesticides (such as fipronil and carbaryl), were used as case studies to generally assess the taxonomic applicability of cytokine responses. The findings in this study may aid in the application of measureable cytokine markers in future adverse outcome pathway (AOP)-based toxicity testing. Data from human and animal studies were coalesced and the possibility of using cytokines as key events (KE) to bridge species responses to external stressors in an AOP-based framework was explored.

An aspect-oriented programming-based approach to the development of software components for fault detection in automatic measurement systems is proposed. Faults are handled by means of specific software units, the "aspects", in order to better modularize issues transversal to several components. As a case study, this approach was applied to the design of the fault detection software inside a flexible framework for magnetic measurements, developed at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). Experimental results of software modularity and performance measurements for comparing aspect- and objectoriented solutions in rotating coils tests on superconducting magnets are reported. Rapid system modelling and early evaluation of design characterisation are central to design space exploration. SystemC is used widely for system-level modelling, but it lacks the semantics to capture power consumption. The article presents a novel high-level power estimation methodology based on SystemC and aspect-oriented programming (AOP). Using a composite pattern, our methodology is applicable to the power estimation of a complex system. The proposed strategies support macro-models with multiple features. The experimental results are illustrated with case studies.

Gaspar: a compositional aspect-oriented approach for cluster applications

This paper presents a framework that enables the development of Java applications that execute on CPUs, graphics processing units (GPUs) and clusters of CPUs/GPUs. Applications are specified in an OpenMP-like fashion, accessing data through a framework-provided data API. The framework enables the efficient execution of applications in CPU and/or GPU by relying on two key features: (i) parallelism exploitation patterns are specified by additional aspect modules;and (ii) data layout can be selected according to the target platform. This paper describes how the framework abstractions are mapped and how the framework intrinsically supports the development of applications with hybrid parallelism by composing aspect modules with a given base program. Performance results show that the framework provides a performance level similar to traditional approaches and enables better performance portability for a given base program. Fault tolerance, one of the means of dependability, is defined as the capability of a system to continue providing offered services even in the presence of errors. Modelling fault tolerant systems is becoming a serious challenge due to emerging requirements suh as dynamism, distribution and system evolution. In this context, AADL is extended by the Error Model Annex to design architectural error model even for critical systems for analysis and assessment purposes. In this paper, we define a model driven approach to generate fault tolerant application code using aspect oriented programming. First, we integrate fault tolerance elements since the modelling step of a system using AADL and its annex Error Model Annex. Second, we define a set of transformation rules from the EMA annex to the AO4AADL annex, an extension of the AADL language by architectural aspects. The model transformation is generic and not specific to a language. AO4AADL is transformed into aspect code using the same target language as the functional code. Therefore, we ensure separation of concerns at the model level as well as the application level. To validate our approach, we apply it to an infant incubator system.

Business documentation provides important overview of the system. It lists implemented business operations and their preconditions and post-conditions, as well as the architecture of the domain model. Such information is valuable for domain experts, who are able to review it, validate the conditions, and help to address errors in early phases of development. However, it is challenging to derive this documentation from existing systems as the business rules are tangled into source code. In this paper, we introduce a novel technique to business documentation derivation from aspect-driven enterprise information systems. These systems isolate business rules in a single focal point and we demonstrate its transformation into business documentation. In the combination with code inspection, we deliver reliable and easy to generate documentation significantly simplifying involvement of domain experts into development. Furthermore, we show the transformation of business rules into a formal language verifiable by a checker to validate the feasibility of business operations.

Conventional user interface design introduces multiple complexities for the development perspective. This is usually caused by the information restatements and mostly by mixing various concerns that result in tangling the user interface code. This paper addresses the above issue with aspect-oriented user interface design approach that can more effectively copy with separation of concerns and thus result with reduced complexity of development and maintenance. Next, we present a small case study of an approach prototype to demonstrate its capabilities.

This paper explores context-aware computing and emphasizes on utilizing context for adaptive user interfaces. It proposes an approach for adaptive user interfaces design involving the context of hardware elements of devices on the Android mobile platform. It proposes a concern separating style of aspect-oriented programming, where the main aspect module provides developers with access to the context of device sensors to adapt individual application aspects. Such an approach brings novel mechanisms to design advanced aspects and enable automatic derivation of adaptive user interfaces at runtime.

Commonly, during programming the code related to use cases becomes scattered across different modules and at the same time the code related to different use cases becomes tangled. This way, it is hard to follow the intent, which is otherwise well comprehensible in use cases. In this paper, we demonstrate a development environment for literal inter-language use case driven modularization. The environment enables to preserve use cases and their steps and have each use case text and related code focused in one file. For this, code instrumentation at three levels is involved: continuous processing, preprocessing, and execution. The approach itself requires also execution control provided by a dedicated framework. Many aspects of the program can be controlled directly from the use case text. At the same time, it is comprehensible to a wide range of stakeholders.
