Integrating Transactions into BPEL Service Compositions: An aspect-Based Approach

The concept of software as a service has been increasingly adopted to develop distributed applications. Ensuring the reliability of loosely coupled compositions is a challenging task because of the open, dynamic, and independent nature of composable services;this is especially true when the execution of a service-based process relies on independent but correlated services. Transactions are the prototypical case of compositions spanning across multiple services and needing properties to be valid throughout the whole execution. Although transaction protocols and service composition languages have been proposed in the past decade, a true viable and effective solution is still missing. In this article, we propose a systematic aspect-based approach to integrating transactions into service compositions, taking into account the well-known protocols: Web Service Transaction and Business Process Execution Language (BPEL). In our approach, transaction policies are first defined as a set of aspects. They are then converted to standard BPEL elements. Finally, these transaction-related elements and the original BPEL process are weaved together, resulting in a transactional executable BPEL process. At runtime, transaction management is the responsibility of a middleware, which implements the coordination framework and transaction protocols followed by the transactional BPEL process and transaction-aware Web services. To automate the proposed approach, we developed a supporting platform called Salan to aid the tasks of defining, validating, and weaving aspect-based transaction policies, and of deploying the transactional BPEL processes. By means of a case study, we demonstrate the proposed approach and evaluate the performance of the supporting platform. Experimental results show that this approach is effective in producing reliable business processes while reducing the need for direct human involvement.

Enterprise Information Systems maintain data with respect to various business processes. These processes consist of business operations restricted by business rules expressed as preconditions and post-conditions. Each rule must be considered and enforced throughout the system, from user interface to persistence storage. Such rule evaluation in multiple contexts results in both significant rule restatement and high maintenance complexity, as there is no single focal point for capturing and reusing these rules. In this paper, we apply the aspect-oriented Design Approach to the persistence layer to simplify business rules management, enforce business rules throughout the system and consequently decrease development and maintenance efforts. Our preliminary results show that it is possible to define business rules in a single place and then apply them automatically in a persistence layer. We retrieve data sets restricted by given operation post-conditions with respect to current execution context without any manual rule restatement. This paper provides a small case study emphasizing the benefits and future challenges.

aspect-oriented programming (AOP), which allows for modularizing concerns that normally cause crosscutting in object oriented (OO) systems, has effectively solved the problem that the Object-oriented programming (OOP) has encountered such as the scattered codes and tangled codes resulting from the cross-cutting concerns. At present, the AOP paradigm has expanded to all the lifecycle of the software development, as a result, aspect-oriented Software Development (AOSD) is becoming a new technique, which has an important step of modeling the aspects. Modeling aspects is a hot topic these days, however, there is no uniform modeling technique to support this new method. Since the Unified Modeling Language (UML) is an extensible modeling language to facilitate domain specific modeling. At this paper, we use the extension mechanisms provided by the UML to model the aspects of a system to improve the stations of AOP in the software development.

The languages defined by the standard IEC 6-1131 for Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), have both benefits and drawbacks compared to object-oriented programming languages. For example, the current programming approach is good for maintaining the system, since it is easy to program and comprehend for a plant floor personal with limited programming experience. The main drawbacks are reusability, code dependability and flexibility. This paper proposes an aspect-oriented programming (AOP) approach as an alternative solution, which can keep the benefits and eliminate the drawbacks. AOP is an emerging programming methodology in computer science, which helps the programmer by separating different crosscutting concerns in the program. These crosscutting concerns and tangled behavior are especially important issues in PLC programming, which makes AOP a suitable approach. The paper describes how to adapt the AOP methodology into PLC program development and how it can benefit the control design process.

FeatureIDE is an open-source framework for feature-oriented software development (FOSD) based on Eclipse. FOSD is a paradigm for the construction, customization, and synthesis of software systems. Code artifacts are mapped to features, and a customized software system can be generated given a selection of features. The set of software systems that can be generated is called a software product line (SPL). FeatureIDE supports several FOSD implementation techniques such as feature-oriented programming, aspect-oriented programming, delta-oriented programming, and preprocessors. All phases of FOSD are supported in FeatureIDE, namely domain analysis, requirements analysis, domain implementation, and software generation. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

aspect-oriented programming enables to affect existing code without having to make changes to it. By this, changes remain modularized and as such are easily activated or deactivated with a high potential of direct reusability in other applications. However, aspect-oriented programming on mobile platforms is practically unexploited, despite the whole range of opportunities such as usage monitoring, power monitoring, altering sensor values, or altering applications. In this paper, we explore possibilities of using aspect-oriented programming in the aspectJ programming language and demonstrate how to alter the GPS sensor output, phone signals, and deal with the Context class as a gate to the Android services.

Many aspect mining techniques have been proposed for object-oriented systems. Unfortunately, aspect mining for multi-agent systems is an unexplored research area. The inherent specificities of multi-agent systems (such as autonomy, pro-activity, reactivity, and adaptability) make it difficult to understand, reuse and maintain their code. We propose, in this paper, a (semi-automatic) hybrid aspect mining approach for agent-oriented code. The technique is based on both static and dynamic analyzes. The main motivations of this work are (I) identifying cross-cutting concerns in existing agent-oriented code, and (2) making them explicitly available to software engineers involved in the evolution of agent-oriented code in order to facilitate its refactoring and, consequently, to improve its understandability, reusability and maintainability. The proposed approach is supported by a software tool, called MAMIT (MAS aspect-Mining Tool), that we developed. The approach and the associated tool are illustrated using a concrete case study. With the increasing complexity of digital hardware designs, hardware description languages are being pushed to higher levels of abstraction, thus allowing for the use of design artifacts which were previously exclusive to the software domain. In this paper we aim to contribute to this scenario by proposing artifacts and guidelines for hardware design at the register transfer level using object-oriented and aspect-oriented programming concepts. Our methodology is based on features provided by SystemC, a C++-based hardware description language, and leverages on its synthesizable subset in order to produce designs suitable for circuit synthesis. Our experimental results show that the introduction of aspect-oriented design artifacts results in an increased level of flexibility and reusability while yielding a circuit area overhead of only 2.5% when compared to non-aspect-oriented designs. Design patterns often need to be blended (or composed) when they are instantiated in a software system. The composition of design patterns consists of assigning multiple pattern elements into overlapping sets of classes in a software system. Whenever the modularity of each design pattern is not preserved in the source code, their implementation becomes tangled with each other and with the classes' core responsibilities. As a consequence, the change or removal of each design pattern will be costly or prohibitive as the software system evolves. In fact, composing design patterns is much harder than instantiating them in an isolated manner. Previous studies have found design pattern implementations are naturally crosscutting in object-oriented systems, thereby making it difficult to modularly compose them. Therefore, aspect-oriented programming (AOP) has been pointed out as a natural alternative for modularizing and blending design patterns. However, there is little empirical knowledge on how AOP models influence the composability of widely used design patterns. This paper investigates the influence of using AOP models for composing the Gang-of-Four design patterns. Our study categorizes different forms of pattern composition and studies the benefits and drawbacks of AOP in these contexts. We performed assessments of several pair-wise compositions taken from 3 medium-sized systems implemented in Java and two AOP models, namely, aspectJ and Compose*. We also considered complex situations where more than two patterns involved in each composition, and the patterns were interacting with other aspects implementing other crosscutting concerns of the system. In general, we observed two dominant factors impacting the pattern composability with AOP: (i) the category of the pattern composition, and (ii) the aspecti idioms used to implement the design patterns taking part in the composition.
