Although software developers look to the security concept as a non-functional side of application systems they don't deny that this side represents one of the main pillars used to support the functional side of the applications, thus, increasing the recommendations of the application systems after achievement of user satisfaction. Unauthorized access to information represents one of the most important challenges faced by application systems developers. The privacy-preserving and security concepts have arisen from the usage of data resources, which sometimes leads to the sharing of personal identifying information (PII). Access control is one widely accepted security solution, by restricting the accessing of the data only to authorized users. Adding or updating access control concerns in system applications represents a difficult task for system developers because they need to track all program codes to detect where restriction methods should be inserted. At the same time, they have to define which piece of code needs to be applied for different access control policies. All of these concerns are accumulated in the problem of scattering and tangling of system software. A widely suggested but under-used solution to these problems is that of aspect oriented programming (AOP). AOP is an effective technique for modularizing concerns and changing the execution behavior of existing codes with only the minimal need to change existing software implementations. In this paper we present a literature review in access control methods which used AOP to apply security concepts into application systems. Through our narration of the methods, we show the advantage of using AOP to modularize the access control policies and security concerns, and therefore increase the clarity, maintainability and reusability of system software.

aspect-oriented programming (AOP) is a maturing technique that requires a good comprehension of which types of mistakes programmers make during the development of applications. Unfortunately, the lack of such knowledge seems to represent one of the reasons for the cautious adoption of AOP in real software development projects. This paper reports on the results of a series of experiments whose main goal is to analyze and catalogue code pitfalls that are likely to lead programmers to make mistakes in AOP refactoring. Each experiment consists of a task that requires the aspectization of a crosscutting concern in one object-oriented application. Eight rounds of the experiment provided us with data of 98 AOP implementations from four crosscutting concerns in four different applications. Each participant of the experiment produced one implementation. Based on the analysis of these implementations, we (i) document six categories of recurring mistakes made by programmers, (ii) correlate these mistakes with the programmer expertise in object-oriented programming, years of software development, and pair programming, and (iii) derive a catalogue of code pitfalls which are likely to lead programmers to make the documented mistakes. We apply significance tests in order to statistically evaluate our results. We also present a prototype tool to warn programmers of the code pitfalls during refactoring activities. The development of applications for high-performance embedded systems is a long and error-prone process because in addition to the required functionality, developers must consider various and often conflicting nonfunctional requirements such as performance and/or energy efficiency. The complexity of this process is further exacerbated by the multitude of target architectures and mapping tools. This article describes LARA, an aspect-oriented programming language that allows programmers to convey domain-specific knowledge and nonfunctional requirements to a toolchain composed of source-to-source transformers, compiler optimizers, and mapping/synthesis tools. LARA is sufficiently flexible to target different tools and host languages while also allowing the specification of compilation strategies to enable efficient generation of software code and hardware cores (using hardware description languages) for hybrid target architectures - a unique feature to the best of our knowledge not found in any other aspect-oriented programming language. A key feature of LARA is its ability to deal with different models of join points, actions, and attributes. In this article, we describe the LARA approach and evaluate its impact on code instrumentation and analysis and on selecting critical code sections to be migrated to hardware accelerators for two embedded applications from industry. Software Testing is an evaluation mechanism that signifies the importance of software quality assurance, which will evaluate a particular system to check if it will satisfy all the requirements specified by the user. One cannot underestimate the importance of software testing. The wider perceptibility of software systems and the cost, which is related to the software failure are driving factors for efficient planning through testing. In this paper, we elaborate on the Unit testing and Data flow testing techniques applied on Object-oriented programming and aspect-oriented programming. Moreover a tabular contrast of both the techniques is presented representing the differences between both the techniques.

The measurement is an important field in the software engineering. This field studies the assignment of a value to a software attribute using metrics. In fact, the use of metrics, which are the defined measurement methods and the measurement scales, in software engineering allows among other goals to control the quality of the software products, the quality of the software processes or the evolution of the software projects. Usually, we distinct two kinds of metrics: the static and the dynamic ones. The static metrics can be obtained from the source code of the software. On the other side, the dynamic metrics requires the execution of the software. Consequently, the static metrics are the most applied because of their relative simplicity compared to the dynamic metrics. However, we think that the dynamic metrics are more appropriate in some software categories. Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) is one of these categories because of the flexible nature of the agents. Consequently, we propose in this paper the using of the aspect-oriented programming (AOP) to measure the dynamic metrics of multi-agent systems. In fact, the proposed approach provides several advantages like the simplicity, the reusability and the extensibility. In order to validate the proposed approach, we developed a tool that allows measuring of some metrics of DIMA-based applications.

Unauthorized access to personal information represents one of the most important challenges faced by network application developers. The privacy-preserving concept has arisen from the usage of database resources, which sometimes leads to the sharing of personal identifying information (PII). Adding or updating privacy and security concerns in system applications represents a difficult task for system developers because they need to track all program code to detect where privacy and security methods should be inserted. At the same time, they have to define which piece of code needs to be applied for different privacy and security policies. All of these concerns accumulate in the problem of scattering and tangling of system software. A widely-suggested but under-used solution to these problems is that of aspect oriented programming (AOP). This paper proposes a new system for enforcing privacy-preserving concepts in order to ensure safe communication between distributed system nodes through the use of AOP. The idea based on the use of a smart server node called a judgment node (JN) to deal with data forwarding between the distributed system's nodes. Cryptographic algorithms are adopted in this work as a tool controlled by the JN to ensure the integrity of the transmitted data. We will present a novel approach which divides the data into portions with each part encrypted depending on the key of the authorized node used to process it. We use AOP characteristics for dealing with all of these concerns through the addition and removal of code dynamically to ensure a high level of performance. We use AOP as a core tool to modularize the privacy and security concerns, and to increase the clarity, maintainability and reusability of system software.

For systems which deal with serious or dangerous things（for example nuclear power plant）, programs are constrained by legislation to be safe in any case, which requires verification process during the execution, in other words "Runtime Verification"（RV）. The field of runtime verification has many different names: runtime monitoring, runtime checking, runtime result checking, runtime reflection, monitoring oriented programming, design by contract, runtime analysis, dynamic analysis, trace analysis, fault protection, etc. aspect-oriented programming（AOP） is a useful paradigm for monitoring programs, even if it was not created for this purpose. Indeed, AOP tries to deal with crosscutting concerns（tangled and scattered codes） by "capturing" them within a new entity called aspect, and runtime verification properties are conceptually transversal to the code they verify, unavoidably resulting in such crosscutting codes. AOP is always used as an extension of an existing language. Hence it is necessary to design an aspect language extending the target language, and to use what is called a weaver, to realize a binding operation between the target program and the aspects. Thus, one can find many aspect-programming extensions（including an aspect language and an aspect weaver） for most programming languages. The first one to be developed was aspect J, designed for Java, and which has been the best-known reference among aspect-oriented tools until now. We use an aspect J-like tool, straight inspired from aspect J but designed for C, called ACC, which is itself an improved version of aspect C. The purpose of this paper is to explore the possibility of implementing and monitoring generic（also called parameterized） verification properties, i.e. which could be used on any target code, with ACC through a basic example. aspect-oriented programming (AOP) was proposed with the purpose of improving software modularization by treating crosscutting concerns. Since its introduction, there is no consensus about the impact on performance of the use of AOP techniques to deal with crosscutting concerns. This article explores further the evaluation of performance by proposing a systematic literature review to find out how performance is affected by the introduction of aspects. Then, an experiment is performed to find results about the performance of AOP and weavers. This experiment showed the assessment of several versions of an application. According to this study, the difference concerning resource consumption through variation of weavers can be considered irrelevant considering web applications.

Adaptive User Interfaces (AUIs) provide better usability, user satisfaction as well as personalized experience. AUIs bring broad benefits to end users, but their construction introduces numerous difficulties caused by extended development and maintenance efforts. One option to deal with the above problems is to generate various User Interface (UI) descriptions from a model or existing code. This paper considers the aspect-oriented programming (AOP)-based approach for the AUI design. Integrations of the approach with contemporary AUI frameworks, such as XML User Interface Language (XUL), User interface protocol (UIP) and JavaServer Faces (JSF) are compared from the perspective of the development and maintenance on a case study involving context-aware (CA) application. The outcome of this paper presents advantages, disadvantages and limitations of the particular frameworks for construction of AUIs.

Execution levels for aspect-oriented programming: Design, semantics, implementations and applications

In aspect-oriented programming (AOP) languages, advice evaluation is usually considered as part of the base program evaluation. This is also the case for certain pointcuts, such as if pointcuts in aspectJ, or simply all pointcuts in higher-order aspect languages like aspectScheme. While viewing aspects as part of base level computation clearly distinguishes AOP from reflection, it also comes at a price: because aspects observe base level computation, evaluating pointcuts and advice at the base level can trigger infinite regression. To avoid these pitfalls, aspect languages propose ad-hoc mechanisms, which increase the complexity for programmers while being insufficient in many cases. After shedding light on the many facets of the issue, this paper proposes to clarify the situation by introducing levels of execution in the programming language, thereby allowing aspects to observe and run at specific, possibly different, levels. We adopt a defensive default that avoids infinite regression, and gives advanced programmers the means to override this default using level-shifting operators. We then study execution levels both in practice and in theory. First, we study the relevance of the issues addressed by execution levels in existing aspect-oriented programs. We then formalize the semantics of execution levels and prove that the default semantics is indeed free of a certain form of infinite regression, which we call aspect loops. Finally, we report on existing implementations of execution levels for aspect-oriented extensions of Scheme, JavaScript and Java, discussing their implementation techniques and current applications.
