Visual Computer-Managed Security: A Framework for Developing Access Control in Enterprise Applications

The Visual Computer Managed Security (Vicoms) framework assists programmers in coding access control for Java applications. Vicoms provides a transparent way of managing security aspects in enterprise-level applications, including legacy ones. It has been embedded within the Eclipse open source integrated development environment and used experimentally in several case studies, one of which is described in the article.

The synthesis and mapping of applications to configurable embedded systems is a notoriously complex process. Design-flows typically include tools that have a wide range of parameters which interact in very unpredictable ways, thus creating a large and complex design space. When exploring this space, designers must manage the interfaces between different tools and apply, often manually, a sequence of tool-specific transformations making design exploration extremely cumbersome and error-prone. This paper describes the use of techniques inspired by aspect-oriented technology and scripting languages for defining and exploring hardware compilation strategies. In particular, our approach allows developers to control all stages of a hardware/software compilation and synthesis toolchain: from code transformations and compiler optimizations to placement and routing for tuning the performance of application kernels. Our approach takes advantage of an integrated framework which provides a transparent and unified view over toolchains, their data output and the control of their execution. We illustrate the use of our approach when designing application-specific hardware architectures generated by a toolchain composed of high-level source-code transformation and synthesis tools. The results show the impact of various strategies when targeting custom hardware and expose the complexities in devising these strategies, hence highlighting the productivity benefits of this approach. Towards the practical mutation testing of aspectJ programs

Mutation testing is a test selection criterion that relies on the assumption that test cases which can reveal artificial faults in the software are also good to reveal the real ones. It helps to expose faults which would go otherwise unnoticed. This criterion has been shown to be a promising means to deal with testing-related specificities of contemporary programming techniques such as aspect-oriented programming. However, to date the few initiatives for customising mutation testing for aspect-oriented (AO) programs show either limited coverage with respect to the range of simulated faults, or a need for both adequate tool support and proper evaluation in regard to properties like application cost and effectiveness. This article tackles these limitations by describing a comprehensive mutation-based testing approach for programs written in aspectJ, which represents the most investigated AO programming language to date. The approach encompasses the definition of a set of mutation operators for aspectJ-specific constructs and the implementation of a tool that automates the approach. The results of a preliminary evaluation study show that the mutation operators are able to simulate faults that may not be revealed by pre-existing, non-mutation-based test suites. The results also suggest that the approach seems not to overwhelm the testers and hence represents a step towards the practical fault-based testing of aspectJ-like programs. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. Enriching MATLAB with aspect-oriented features for developing embedded systems

This article presents an approach to enrich the MATLAB(1) language with aspect-oriented modularity features, enabling developers to experiment different implementation characteristics and to acquire runtime data and traces without polluting their base MATLAB code. We propose a language through which programmers configure the low-level data representation of variables and expressions. Examples include specifically-tailored fixed-point data representations leading to more efficient support for the underlying hardware, e.g., digital signal processors and application-specific architectures, without built-in floating point units. This approach assists developers in adding handlers and monitoring features in a non-invasive way as well as configuring MATLAB functions with optimized implementations. Different aspect modules can be used to retarget common MATLAB code bases for different purposes and implementations. We validate the proposed approach with a set of representative examples where we attain a simple way to explore a number of properties. Experiment results and collected aspect-oriented software metrics lend support to the claims on its usefulness. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Modular and flexible causality control on the Web

Ajax allows JavaScript programmers to create interactive, collaborative, and user-centered Web applications, known as Web 2.0 Applications. These Web applications behave as distributed systems because processors are user machines that are used to send and receive messages between one another. Unsurprisingly, these applications have to address the same causality issues present in distributed systems like the need (a) to control the causality between messages sent and responses received and (b) to react to distributed causal relations. JavaScript programmers overcome these issues using rudimentary and alternative techniques that largely ignore the distributed computing theory. In addition, these techniques are not very flexible and need to intrusively modify these Web applications. In this paper, we study how causality issues affect these applications and present WeCa, a practical library that allows for modular and flexible control over these causality issues in Web applications. In contrast to current proposals, WeCa is based on (stateful) aspects, message ordering strategies, and vector clocks. We illustrate WeCa in action with several practical examples from the realm of Web applications. In addition, we evaluate our proposal with a third-party application and its performance. We show how to use aspect-oriented programming to separate security and trust issues from the logical design of mobile, distributed systems. The main challenge is how to enforce various types of security policies, in particular predictive access control policies - policies based on the future behavior of a program. Facilitating software extension with design patterns and aspect-oriented programming

Software products, especially large applications, need to continuously evolve, in order to adapt to the changing environment and updated requirements. With both the producer and the customer unwilling to replace the existing application with a completely new one, adoption of design constructs and techniques which facilitate the application extension is a major design issue. In the current work we investigate the behavior of an object-oriented software application at a specific extension scenario, following three implementation altematives with regards to a certain design problem relevant to the extension. The first alternative follows a simplistic solution, the second makes use of a design pattern and the third applies aspect-oriented programming techniques to implement the same pattern. An assessment of the three alternatives is attempted, both on a qualitative and a quantitative level, by identifying the additional design implications needed to perform the extension and evaluating the effect of the extension on several quality attributes of the application. Implementing design patterns in Object Teams

This paper presents a study of the support for modularity of Object Teams, an aspect-oriented language backwards compatible with Java. The study is based on implementations in Object Teams of two complete collections of the Gang-of-Four design patterns. An analysis of the implementations is provided, in terms of advantages of Object Teams over Java with respect to modularity, module composition and reuse. We present a systematic comparison with a functionally equivalent collection of implementations in aspectJ, regarding five modularity properties: locality, reusability, composition transparency, (un)pluggability and extensibility. Object Teams yields broadly comparable results in terms of the first four properties. Object Teams yields better results as regards flexible module extensibility, composition at the instance level and enclosing multiple pattern participants into a larger, cohesive module. aspectJ is more successful than Object Teams in the Singleton pattern because of its ability to intercept constructor events. Infrastructure frameworks are used to accelerate the development of information systems. These frameworks encompass software concerns commonly used in the information system domain, e.g. "persistence", "authentication" and "concurrency". Although these functionalities improve productivity, the reuse process is still heavily based on writing source code, which forces the development teams to learn low level details of the frameworks being reused, causing the reuse process to be entirely performed during implementation phases. In this article, the focus is on Crosscutting Frameworks, which modularize specific types of software concerns. Since these frameworks can also be infrastructure frameworks, in this article, a new model-driven process is applied in a persistence crosscutting framework. A tool was created to support the process, which was successfully evaluated in an empirical study. This process was compared to the conventional process in an empirical study in order to evaluate the efforts needed to successfully reuse the framework. In our study, the tool usage has reduced the reuse process time by more than 97 %.

Inference rules for generic code migration of aspect-oriented programs

Several changes occurred in the aspectJ language to provide support for parametric polymorphism. Such changes aim to improve the source code type safety and to prepare the language to support generic code migration. Current approaches for this kind of migration focus only on object-oriented code. Therefore, they do not consider the use of aspects to encapsulate crosscutting concerns. We propose a collection of type constraint rules for the polymorphic version of aspectJ. These rules are used together with an existing constraint based algorithm to enable the conversion of non-generic code to add actual type parameters in both Java and aspectJ languages.
