The re-usability and modularity of components reduce the cost and complexity of the software design. It is difficult to predict run-time scenarios covering all possible circumstances to ensure that the components are fully compatible with the system. Given that, monitoring run-time behaviours of components presents a close view of the component qualities. The existing monitoring approaches either implement applications with built-in monitoring features, or observe the external resources and events to predict the status of the components. In this paper, we propose an approach to monitor the run-time behaviours of components using aspect-oriented wrappers and contracts. We design monitoring wrappers to encapsulate the monitored components. We use contracts to define the mutual obligations of two interacting components. The policies implemented in contracts are woven into component wrappers as separate aspect modules. If the component contains any flaws or vulnerabilities, the wrappers can monitor some behaviours and prevent failures propagating into the wrapped components and the rest of the system. This approach assures that the system is running in a safe environment with the erroneous behaviours detected appropriately. We conducted experiments on the run-time monitoring of SQL Injection, Cross Site Scripting attacks, and access control policies. The results show that the framework is very flexible to impose separate policies as aspects on component wrappers without the modifications of the underlying components.

This paper presents a model-driven methodology and tool for Real-Time Embedded Control Software (RTECS) design. This methodology leads to evolve the RTECS development process from a classical code-oriented development to a model-driven development where the code is generated automatically. It uses a component-based and aspect-oriented approach. The component approach should add significant value to the design process, helping the software designer to produce modular and reusable system model. The aspect approach represents a significant paradigm shift from the traditional monolithic view. It provides a better ability to model extra-functional properties of RTECS. Both approaches lead to make the RTECS design significantly easier and improve the model accuracy and reduce the design time and cost. A tool called MoDEST implements this methodology and provides automated model transformations and real-time code generation. It should help designers to analyse system models.

Accurate and efficient dynamic analysis tools are needed for understanding and improving performance of programs. However, such tools often produce perturbed and misleading results, since the inserted analysis code may interfere with runtime optimizations performed by the just-in-time compiler. In this work, I present an approach based on aspect-oriented programming (AOP) to dynamically refine the scope of an analysis, gradually reducing the number of intercepted join points at runtime, considering only those that are relevant for the specific analysis. The motivating example is an aspect-based hotspot locator based on execution time profiling.

The requirements for separating business rule connectors show that an aspect-oriented approach is needed, since aspects are ideal for encapsulating the crosscutting connector code. Some contributions show that the AOP reduces dependencies and coupling;thus, best reusing is achieved and maintenance efforts reduced. However, other shortcomings appear directly associated with the nature of the connections and the limitations of the AO languages such as aspectJ. The focus of this paper is the problem of connecting the business rules to the core functionality in OO software. Therefore, this work outlines to explore, propose and experiment the design and implementation of aspectual connector with Spring AOP Framework. Spring AOP mechanisms are very different from aspect.), and then, the connectors can be more flexible, easier to maintain, and more reusable.

aspect-oriented programming (AOP) is a new programming technology. It compensates the weakness of Object-oriented programming (OOP) at applying common behavior that spans multiple non-related object models. Interceptor adopts the logos of AOP and uses a way of hot swap solving these problems. At this issue, we research the AOP technology of Java Web called Struts interceptor. We show the advantage of this new programming method through an online submission and review system which using AOP method in the authentication and authorization.

When using aspect-oriented programming, it is sometimes difficult to determine at which join point an aspect executes. Similarly, when considering one join point, knowing which aspects will execute there and in what order is non-trivial. This makes it difficult to understand how the application will behave. A number of visualizations have been proposed that attempt to provide support for such program understanding. However, they neither scale up to large code bases nor scale down to understanding what happens at a single join point. In this paper, we present aspectMaps - a visualization that scales in both directions, thanks to a multi-level selective structural zoom. We show how the use of aspectMaps allows for program understanding of code with aspects, revealing both a wealth of information of what can happen at one particular join point as well as allowing to see the "big picture" on a larger code base. We demonstrate the usefulness of aspectMaps on an example and present the results of a small user study that shows that aspectMaps outperforms other aspect visualization tools. In software development there are different paradigms that can be combined among them such as object-oriented paradigm, aspect-oriented paradigm and component-oriented paradigm. CaesarJ is a programming language that provides support for these paradigms, in addition to the support for software product lines, allowing the development of applications with more robustness. However, the support for code analysis tools is still limited with respect to the software engineering, taking as reference the implementation of XML-based structured representations for popular languages such as Java, C++, C#, among others. This paper presents the generation of a XML-based representation for CaesarJ source code in order to provide to developers and software engineers, a representation that can be processed by different tools for code analysis or other techniques aimed at working with source code.

aspect-oriented programming (AOP) aims at facilitating program comprehension and maintenance in the presence of crosscutting concerns. aspect code is often introduced and extended as the software projects evolve. Unfortunately, we still lack a good understanding of how faults are introduced in evolving aspect-oriented programs. More importantly, there is little knowledge whether existing metrics are related to typical fault introduction processes in evolving aspect-oriented code. This paper presents an exploratory study focused on the analysis of how faults are introduced during maintenance tasks involving aspects. The results indicate a recurring set of fault patterns in this context, which can better inform the design of future metrics for AOP. We also pinpoint AOP-specific fault categories which are difficult to detect with popular metrics for fault-proneness, such as coupling and code churn.

The common approach to include non-functional requirements in tool chains for hardware/software embedded systems requires developers to manually change the software code and/or the hardware, in an error-prone and tedious process. In the REFLECT research project we explore a novel approach where safety requirements are described using an aspect-and strategy-oriented programming language, named LARA, currently under development. The approach considers that the weavers in the tool chain use those safety requirements specified as aspects and strategies to produce final implementations according to specific design patterns. This paper presents our approach including LARA-based examples using an avionics application targeting the FPGA-based embedded systems consisting of a general purpose processor (GPP) coupled to custom computing units.

Although aspect-oriented programming (AOP) aims to improve the software modularity, developers can unwittingly introduce code smells in their programs. Even though a few code smells for AOP have been reported in the literature, there is no evidence whether and how they occur in evolving software projects. There is also little knowledge on their actual impact on architecture degeneration, such as their correlation with architecturally-relevant flaws. Therefore, in this research we investigate which AOP smells occur in evolving software systems and how their (co-) occurrence are usually associated with architecturally-relevant flaws. The basic idea is to equip AOP developers with analysis techniques for the source code that exploit the architectural design information.
