We present a runtime verification framework for Java programs. Properties can be specified in Linear-time Temporal Logic (LTL) over aspectJ pointcuts. These properties are checked during program-execution by an automaton-based approach where transitions are triggered through aspects. No Java source code is necessary since aspectJ works on the bytecode level, thus even allowing instrumentation of third-party applications. As an example, we discuss safety properties and lock-order reversal.

Timeliness and criticality of a process are the two main concerns when designing real-time systems. In addition to that embedded systems are bounded by limited resources. To achieve these concerns while at the same time using a minimal amount or resources, real-time embedded systems use different techniques such as task scheduling, resource management and task synchronization. These techniques involve a number of the modules of the system which makes the use of aspect-oriented Software Development imperative. AOSD is a programming technique which uses the notion of join points to capture specific locations in code execution and then use advices to insert new code. This paper examines existing work in the development of schedulers, resource allocation agents and synchronization techniques using aspect-oriented Software Development in real-time embedded systems. An analysis of the existing research is used to describe the advantages of using AOSD over conventional OOP methods and to identify areas where further research may be required.

Traditional hardware design is not flexible. Specification changes often require redesigning from scratch. The Objected-oriented (00) concept, which consists of encapsulation, inheritance and reusability mechanisms, is applied to solve the problem. However, the 00 concept still confronts code maintenance problem, as the same function may be redundant in several objects. The aspect-oriented programming (AOP) concept is introduced to hardware design to handle the challenges from the 00 concept. To decide whether to switch the hardware design technology from 00 to AOP concepts, one has to consider many uncertainties related technology change. The Net Present Value (NPV) is the traditional valuation approach to investment decision, but it does not handle uncertainties directly. The real options approach, which supports the valuation of project investment under uncertainty, is proposed to value the expected payoff of the technology shift from 00 to AOP concepts. This paper illustrates how to apply the real options approach to hardware design decision. Insights from applying the real options framework are presented as guidelines in considering the hardware design technology switch.

aspect composition is still a hot research topic where there is no consensus on how to express where and when aspects have to be composed into a base system. In this paper we present a modular construct for aspects, called aspectboxes, that enables aspects application to be limited to a well defined scope. An aspectbox encapsulates class and aspect definitions. Classes can be imported into an aspectbox defining a base system to which aspects may then be applied. Refinements and instrumentation defined by an aspect are visible only within this particular aspectbox leaving other parts of the system unaffected.

This paper discusses the aspect-oriented Framework for Web services (AoF4WS) that supports on-demand context-sensitive security in Web services. Flexible security schemes are needed in many Web services applications where authentication, authorization, etc., can no longer be used in their current form. Security mechanisms are to be customized to the continuously changing requirements of Web services. Examples of this customization concern cryptographic protocol for a specific situation and timeout for user credentials. The AoF4WS uses aspect-oriented programming and frames. aspects provide flexibility to the framework, and frames adjust aspects to specific requirements.

Web Service composition is to construct complex service through combining available services components as request A service component is a self-contained unit of service construction that provides an identifiable and distinct part of a service with well-defined interface. For example, to assure the security of web service, both the service provider and requestor should take account of the security control. But the implementation of crosscutting concerns, such as security control, will scatter in multiple components. In this paper we adopt the aspect-oriented programming (AOP) to separate security control from other functional requirements. AOP is a new software development paradigm that aims to increase comprehensibility, adaptability, and reusability by introducing aspect to modularize the crosscutting concerns. Any behavior associated to several components is encapsulated into an aspect In our work, the composition is extended by weaving extension at running time. It makes the service composition more flexible and gives the composer a chance to unify security policy in composed service by specifying appropriate security extension himself. This paper also presents an infrastructure to demonstrate how dynamic weaving of aspects can be used to enhance the security of service composition. An application of performing user-defined access control dynamically at run-time is given to exemplify the dynamic extension to service composition.

Moving program code that implements cross-cutting concerns into aspects can improve the maintainability of legacy systems. This kind of refactoring, called aspectualization, can also introduce faults into a system. A test driven approach can identify these faults during the refactoring process so that they can be removed. We perform systematic testing as we aspectualize commercial VLSI CAD applications. The process of refactoring these applications revealed the kinds of faults that can arise during aspectualization, and helped us to develop techniques to reduce their occurrences.

Caching dynamic web content is an effective approach to reduce Internet latency and server load. An ideal caching solution is one that can be added transparently by the developers and provides complete consistency of the cached documents, while minimizing false cache invalidations. In this paper, we design and implement AutoWebCache, a middleware system for adding caching of dynamic content transparently to J2EE server-side applications having a backend database. For this purpose, we first present the principles involved in caching dynamic web content, including our logic to ensure consistency of the cached entries. Thereafter, we demonstrate the use of aspect-oriented (AOP) techniques to implement our system, showing how AOP provides modularity and transparency to the entire process. Further, we evaluate the effectiveness of AutoWebCache in reducing response times of applications, thereby improving throughput. We also analyze the transparency of our system for a general application suite, considering issues such as dynamic web pages aggregating data from multiple sources, presence of insufficiently structured interfaces for exchanging information and the use of application semantics while caching. We use two standard J2EE web benchmark applications, RUBiS and TPC-W, to conduct our experiments and discuss the results obtained.

Current approaches to compiling aspect-oriented programs are inefficient. This inefficiency has negative effects on the productivity of the development process and is especially prohibitive for dynamic aspect deployment. In this work, we present how wellknown virtual machine techniques can be used with only slight modi. cations to support fast aspect deployment while retaining runtime performance. Our implementation accelerates dynamic aspect deployment by several orders of magnitude relative to mainstream aspect-oriented environments. We also provide a detailed comparison of alternative implementations of execution environments with support for dynamic aspect deployment.

aspect-oriented programming (AOP) is increasingly gaining in popularity. However, the focus of aspect-oriented language research has been mostly on language design issues;efficient implementation techniques have been less popular. As a result, the performance of certain AOP constructs is still poor. This is in particular true for constructs that rely on dynamic properties of the execution (e. g., the cflow construct). In this paper, we present efficient implementation techniques for cflow that exploit direct access to internal structures of the virtual machine running an application, such as the call stack, as well as the integration of these techniques into the just-in-time compiler code generation process. Our results show that AOP has the potential to make programs that need to de. ne control flow-dependent behavior not only more modular but also more efficient. By making means for control flow-dependent behavior part of the language, AOP opens the possibility of applying sophisticated compiler optimizations that are out of reach for application programmers.
