Component-based software development approach is one of the most promising solutions for the emerging high development cost, low productivity, unmanageable software quality and high risk. This approach, however, encounters some problems about unseparated crosscutting concerns that are easy to lead to the code-tangling and code-scattering. aspect-oriented programming enables the handling of crosscutting concerns and implements the separation of concerns. It will help to understand the software system better and strengthen the adaptability, maintainability and reusability of the final software. This paper defines the aspect model at first, and then the static and dynamic combinatorial semantic between component and aspect are described. The definition is an extension of traditional architecture model. Based on the definition, we extend the XADL by introducing the aspect, which enhances the nonfunctional properties description capability of ADL. Furthermore, using the ATM system as an example, we illustrate how to describe the system with the label we defined.

Web Service Technology allows for the development of client applications independently of the web services they use. In this article, we propose a dynamic invocation mechanism for unanticipated web services that offers support for conversational messaging, based on dynamic aspect oriented programming (AOP) techniques. aspects are used to store the communication details and the conversational context of the web service. In case of service failures, the conversation can be replayed on another semantically equivalent web service, in a transparent way for the client. Code examples are given in the dynamic AOP language JAsCo, and a prototype, called Web Services Management Layer, is discussed as a proof-of-concept.

This paper presents an aspect-oriented approach to access control in mobile agent systems, where a multipoint security check mechanism visualizes the services of a host as individual components and access of each will require authentication. Since the security check crosscuts various functional components of mobile agents and their platforms, it is naturally handled in the aspect-oriented paradigm. This approach is suitable not only for developing mobile agent systems from scratch, but also for enhancing legacy mobile agent systems. We demonstrate our approach through a case study.

Web service orchestration technologies are emerging as practical means to integrate business partners' applications with higher levels of functionality, negligible performance degradation, reduced development effort, and better quality of service. However, because most compositional languages address distribution concerns at the early stage of the business process definition, Web-based applications become more static and more difficult to develop. In this paper we propose a method to reduce the complexity of Web service orchestration by using a new compositional language named BPCL (Business Process Coordination Language) that keeps apart physical distribution details. Furthermore, a coordination architecture has been built to support the common process abstractions used in business collaboration by means of a synchronization and communication infrastructure. In the proposed approach, to obtain a Web-based application, aspect oriented programming is used to weave locality transparent BPCL programs with the distribution handling capabilities supported by the coordination architecture. Besides of simplifying the development of orchestrated Webbased applications, the main contribution of this work consists on providing a coordination language and architecture that promote greater dynamism, non-invasive code reuse and efficient execution.

We propose an aspect-oriented programming (AOP) language called aspectual Caml based on a strongly-typed functional language Objective Caml with two AOP mechanisms similar to those in aspectJ language. This paper describes the design and implementation issues of those AOP mechanisms that give us insights into the interaction between AOP features and common features in strongly-typed functional languages such as type inference, polymorphic types and curried functions. We implemented a prototype compiler of the language and used the language for separating crosscutting concerns in application programs, including for separating descriptions of a type system from compiler descriptions.

We present an approach to providing broad-based accessibility to graphical applications by employing the capabilities of the Eclipse platform and aspect-oriented programming (AOP) in away that leverages the strengths of each. We first describe the Eclipse platform and the variety of frameworks that can be useful to the effort. We also present the advantages of aspect-oriented programming and contrast aspect-oriented programming with object-oriented programming (OOP). Then, we discuss how to use the Eclipse frameworks and AOP in the design of accessible Eclipse-based applications and share some situations of when to leverage these frameworks and when we do not from the perspective of robustness and efficiency.

jMonitor is a pure Java library and runtime utility for specifying event patterns and associating them with user provided event monitors that get called when the specified runtime events occur during the execution of legacy Java applications. jMonitor APIs define an event specification abstraction layer allowing programmers to design event patterns to monitor runtime execution of legacy Java applications. jMonitor instrumentation works at the Java bytecode level and does not require the presence of source code for the Java application that is being monitored. jMonitor overloads the dynamic class loader and takes the event specification and monitors (in the form of Java class files) as additional arguments when launching the target Java application. The class bytecodes of the monitored Java program are instrumented on the fly by the jMonitor class loader according to the needs of the externally specified jMonitor event patterns and event monitors.

We render runtime system adaptations by design-level concepts such that running systems can be adapted and examined at a higher level of abstraction. The overall idea is to express design decisions as applications of design operators to be carried out at runtime. Design operators can implement design patterns for use at runtime. Applications of design operators are made explicit as design elements in the running system such that they can be traced, reconfigured, and made undone. Our approach enables Reflective Designs: on one side, design operators employ reflection to perform runtime adaptations;on the other side, design elements provide an additional reflection protocol to examine and configure performed adaptations. Our approach helps understanding the development and the maintenance of the class of software systems that cannot tolerate downtime or frequent shutdown-revise-startup cycles. We have accumulated a class library for programming with Reflective Designs in Squeak/Smalltalk. This library employs reflection and dynamic aspect-oriented programming. We have also implemented tool support for navigating in a system that is adapted continuously at runtime.

Linking business rules to object-oriented software using JAsCo

Object-oriented software applications that support a particular business or domain consist of substantial core application functionality and business rules. Since business rules tend to evolve frequently, it is important to separate them from the core application. However, current approaches that support business rules at the implementation level only separate the business rules themselves and not the code that links them to the core application. We observe that this code crosscuts the core application. As a result, aspect-oriented programming is required to separate and encapsulate the linking code. In addition to this, we identify several other requirements for obtaining highly flexible and configurable business rules. In previous work we conducted an experiment with aspectJ for separating the business rule links. Although this delivered satisfactory results for some of the requirements, many others were not fulfilled. This paper shows how JAsCo, an aspect-oriented implementation language combining the advantages of aspectJ's expressiveness with the plug-and-play characteristics of components, succeeds in fulfilling the remaining requirements.

Design patterns offer flexible solutions to common problems in software development. Recent studies have shown that several design patterns involve crosscutting concerns. Unfortunately, object-oriented (OO) abstractions are often not able to modularize those crosscutting concerns, which in turn decrease the system reusability and maintainability. Hence, it is important verifying whether aspect-oriented approaches support improved modularization of crosscutting concerns relative to design patterns. Ideally, quantitative studies should be performed to compare OO and aspect-oriented implementations of classical patterns with respect to important software engineering attributes, such as coupling and cohesion. This paper presents a quantitative study that compares aspect-based and OO solutions for the 23 Gang-of-Four patterns. We have used stringent software engineering attributes as the assessment criteria. We have found that most aspect-oriented solutions improve separation of pattern-related concerns, although only 4 aspect-oriented implementations have exhibited significant reuse.
