aspect-oriented software development (AOSD) provides systematic means to modularize crosscutting concerns in software development. Common AOSD benefits are a higher level of abstraction, concern reuse, better legibility, and software maintainability improvement. In AOSD, static weaving implementations commonly obtain better runtime performance, whereas dynamic weaving provides runtime application adaptiveness and a valuable aid in software development. Since both approaches provide benefits, we have developed a Dynamic and Static aspect Weaving (DSAW) platform that supports both kinds of weavers: a full dynamic one to offer high dynamic adaptiveness and a static one to obtain better runtime performance when the application is deployed. Furthermore, both weaving techniques can even be used simultaneously in the same application. Depending on the adaptiveness requirements and the life cycle stage, the programmer could change from one type of weaving to the other without performing any modification in the source code of either components or aspects. Therefore, DSAW provides the separation of the dynamism (weaving-time) concern in the aspect-oriented software development process. Moreover, our platform also supports a wide set of join-points and is language and platform neutral. A detailed assessment has revealed that the DSAW platform provides a competitive alternative to develop aspect oriented software.

A model postgraduate curriculum for aspect-oriented software development has been derived from the practical experience of running postgraduate courses at nine institutions across Europe (part of the European Network of Excellence on AOSD). Several institutions have made concrete instantiations of the curriculum, from a summer school to a university master's degree course. The curriculum also relates to the software Engineering Body of Knowledge.

aspect-oriented software development (AOSD) and Model-Driven development (MDD) are often said to be alike since both approaches are based on the selection of elements (i.e. join points in AOSD and model elements in MDD) and their subsequent adaptation (i.e. weaving in AOSD and transformation in MDD). But does this mean that AOSD and MDD are in fact two words for pretty much the same thing? In this position paper, we argue that there are essential differences between the aspect- oriented and the model- driven approach.

Timeliness and criticality of a process are the two main concerns when designing real-time systems. In addition to that embedded systems are bounded by limited resources. To achieve these concerns while at the same time using a minimal amount or resources, real-time embedded systems use different techniques such as task scheduling, resource management and task synchronization. These techniques involve a number of the modules of the system which makes the use of aspect-oriented software development imperative. AOSD is a programming technique which uses the notion of join points to capture specific locations in code execution and then use advices to insert new code. This paper examines existing work in the development of schedulers, resource allocation agents and synchronization techniques using aspect-oriented software development in real-time embedded systems. An analysis of the existing research is used to describe the advantages of using AOSD over conventional OOP methods and to identify areas where further research may be required.

Focusing on aspects during early stages of the software development lifecycle has received special attention by many researchers, leading to the advent of numerous aspect-oriented software development (AOSD) methods. This has consequently given a relatively high level of maturity to aspect-oriented processes. Process patterns, on the other hand, have been adopted as suitable mechanisms for defining or tailoring processes to fit specific organizational/project requirements. Process patterns, which essentially are reusable process components extracted from successful processes and practices, can be used to engineer new software development methodologies or to enhance existing ones. We propose a generic aspect-oriented software Process (AOSP), constructed through studying and abstracting prominent aspect-oriented processes. Based on the proposed AOSP, process patterns are provided which incorporate well-established aspect-oriented practices for different development stages. By employing specific process evaluation criteria, the characteristics of these patterns have been analyzed.

Improving device-aware Web services and their mobile clients through an aspect-oriented, model-driven approach

Context: Mobile devices have become an essential element in our daily lives, even for connecting to the Internet. Consequently, Web services have become extremely important when offering services through the Internet. However, current Web services are very inflexible as regards their invocation from different types of device, especially if we consider the need for them to be adaptable when being invoked from mobile devices. Objective: In this paper, we provide an approach for the creation of flexible Web services which can be invoked transparently from different device types and which return subsequent responses, as well as providing the client's adaptation as a result of the particular device characteristics and end-user preferences in a completely decoupled way. Method: aspect-oriented Programming and model-driven development have been used to reduce both the impact of service and client code adaptation for multiple devices as well as to facilitate the developer's task. Results: A model-driven methodology can be followed from system models to code, providing the Web service developer with the option of marking which services should be adapted to mobile devices in the UML models, and obtaining the decoupled adaptation code automatically from the models. Conclusion: We can conclude that the approach presented in this paper provides us with the possibility of following the development of mobile-aware Web services in an integrated platform, benefiting from the use of aspect-oriented techniques not only for maintaining device-related code completely decoupled from the main functionality one, but also allowing a modularized non-intrusive adaptation of mobile clients to the specific device characteristics as well as to final user preferences. The specification of join point selections (also known as "pointcuts") is a major design issue in aspect-oriented software development. aspect-oriented systems generally provide specific language constructs (subsumed by the term "pointcut language") for specifying such a join point selection. Pointcut languages differ widely with respect to their syntax and semantics. Consequently, developers familiar with one specific language can hardly benefit from this knowledge when designing and implementing pointcuts in another language. This implies that developers working with different aspect-oriented languages can hardly communicate their design to each other, and knowledge about aspect-oriented design can hardly be transferred among developers developing in different languages. In order to overcome this problem, we present novel specification means based on the UML to represent diverse ways of join point selections - without relying on language-specific syntax and semantics. Instead, the proposed language constructs are able to express join point selections in a variety of different aspect-oriented programming languages.

A Java-based approach for teaching principles of adaptive and evolvable software

The ability to adapt a software artifact is essential toward handling evolving stakeholder requirements. Adaptation is also vital in many areas where software is required to adjust to changing environment conditions (e.g., the growing presence of embedded systems). Current techniques for supporting adaptability and evolvability can be categorized as static (happening at compile-time or design-time), or dynamic (adaptation during the actual execution of the system). This paper describes a special-topics software engineering course that uses Java as a foundation for teaching concepts of static and dynamic adaptation. The course surveys Java-related research in the areas of metaprogramming and reflection, aspect-oriented software development, model-driven computing, and adaptive middleware. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. The separation of concerns is an important issue in the building of maintenable systems. aspect oriented programming (AOP) is a software paradigm that allows the encapsulation of those concerns that crosscut a system and can not be modularized using current paradigms such as object-oriented programming. In this way, AOP increases the software modularization and reduces the impact when changes are made in the system. In order to take advantage of the benefits of AOP, the legacy OO systems should be migrated. To migrate object-oriented systems to aspect-oriented ones, specific refactorings for aspects should be used. This is a complex and tedious task for the developer because he/she needs to know how the refactorings should be applied and under what context. Therefore, it is desirable to have tools that help him/her through the process. In this article, we present an expert software agent, named RefactoringRecommender, that assists the developer during a refactorization of a system. The agent uses a Markovian algorithm with the goal of predicting the needed restructurings. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
