Tool-supported refactoring of existing object-oriented code into aspects

aspect-oriented Programming (AOP) provides mechanisms for the separation of crosscutting concerns - functionalities scattered through the system and tangled with the base code. Existing systems are a natural testbed for the AOP approach since they often contain several crosscutting concerns which could not be modularized using traditional programming constructs. This paper presents an automated approach to the problem of migrating systems developed according to the Object-oriented Programming (OOP) paradigm into aspect-oriented Programming ( AOP). A simple set of six refactorings has been defined to transform OOP to AOP and has been implemented in the AOP-Migrator tool, an Eclipse plug-in. A set of enabling transformations from OOP to OOP complement the initial set of refactorings. The paper presents the results of four case studies, which use the approach to migrate selected crosscutting concerns from medium-sized Java programs ( in the range of 10K to 40K lines of code) into equivalent programs in aspectJ. The case study results show the feasibility of the migration and indicate the importance of the enabling transformations as a preprocessing step.

An architectural aspect is a concern that cuts across architecture modularity units and cannot be effectively modularized using the given abstractions of conventional Architecture Description Languages (ADLs). Dealing with crosscutting concerns is not a trivial task since they affect each other and the base architectural decomposition in multiple heterogeneous ways. The lack of ADL support for modularly representing such aspectual heterogeneous influences leads to a number of architectural breakdowns, such as increased maintenance overhead, reduced reuse capability, and architectural erosion over the lifetime of a system. On the other hand, software architects should not be burdened with a plethora of new ADL abstractions directly derived from aspect-oriented implementation techniques. However, most aspect-oriented ADLs rely on a heavyweight approach that mirrors programming languages concepts at the architectural level. In addition, they do not naturally support heterogeneous architectural aspects and proper resolution of aspect interactions. This paper presents aspectualACME, a simple and seamless extension of the ACME ADL to support the modular representation of architectural aspects and their multiple composition forms. aspectualACME promotes a natural blending of aspects and architectural abstractions by employing a special kind of architectural connector, called aspectual Connector, to encapsulate aspect-component connection details. We have evaluated the applicability and scalability of the aspectualACME features in the context of three case studies from different application domains.

Most available aspect-oriented languages today are extensions to programming languages. However, aspect-orientation, which is a paradigm for decomposition and modularization, is not only applicable in that context. In this paper, we introduce aspect-oriented software development concepts to workflow languages in order to improve the modularity of workflow process specifications with respect to crosscutting concerns and crosscutting changes. In fact, crosscutting concerns such as data validation and security cannot be captured in a modular way when using the constructs provided by current workflow languages. We will propose a concern-based decomposition of workflow process specifications and present the main concepts of aspect-oriented workflow languages using AO4BPEL, which is an aspect-oriented workflow language for Web Service composition.

This paper presents an aspect-oriented approach to integrated elicitation of functional and security requirements based on use case-driven development. We identify security threats with respect to use cases and adopt threat mitigations for preventing or reducing security threats. To capture crosscutting nature of threats and mitigations, we specify them as aspects that encapsulate pointcuts and advice. A threat (mitigation) pointcut is a collection of join points in use cases at which the use cases are threatened (secured);whereas threat/mitigation advice describes how a threat can become an attack (can be mitigated). Eliciting threats and mitigations as aspects provides a structured way for separating functional and security concerns.

In this paper, we claim that a specialized aspect module is not required. Instead, we propose an expressive aspect-oriented composition mechanism which can be applied upon existing modules. At the design level, the CoCompose modeling framework is introduced which is based on Model Driven development. CoCompose allows step-wise refinement from a high-level design to the lowest level design or code level. Using these refinements, CoCompose postpones the decision concerning the modularization construct that is chosen for a particular concern. At the lowest level design however, a specialized aspect modularization construct still needs to be chosen because current aspect-oriented technologies typically introduce an aspect module. For resolving this issue, the FuseJ programming language is proposed that allows implementing all possible concerns as regular components. FuseJ introduces an expressive component composition mechanism that supports both regular and aspect-oriented compositions between components. As such, a seamless transition from design to implementation is achieved because no specialized aspect modules exist both at the design and implementation level.

The variation of contexts in which a Web service could be used and the resulting variation in functional and Quality of Service (QoS) requirements motivates further research to extend Web services platforms to cater for differentiated service offerings and dynamic adaptability. Adaptability is an important requirement in the context of Web services to cater for the need of diverse set of client applications requesting customized view of consumed Web services to fit their own contexts and preferences. This paper presents an ongoing project to devise a novel service composition framework, named AdaptiveBPEL that leverages aspect-oriented software development (AOSD) techniques to "open up" the service composition for dynamic change in order to provide a greater degree of configurability and dynamic adaptability of Web services. This framework can: 1) easily adapt to changes in business rules, and collaboration policies governing service interactions 2) provide different levels of functional and QoS offerings. The adaptation process is policy-driven to declaratively define the adaptive service behavior through dynamic injection of functional and non-functional extensions into a core service composition to allow on-demand and perinstance service adaptability.

The problem of effectively designing and analyzing software to meet non-functional requirements is an important research topic. The Formal Design Analysis Framework (FDAF) is an aspect-oriented approach that supports the design and analysis of multiple non-functional requirements for distributed, real-time systems. In this paper, a security attribute, data origin authentication, is defined as a reusable design aspect based on its security pattern definition. FDAF provides a UML extension to weave the security aspect into a conventional UML design. This is accomplished by abstracting aspect-oriented Programming concepts join points and advice to the design level. FDAF then supports the automated translation of a UML design into Rapide formal architectural description language, allowing the simulation of a system's response time. Thus, the response time of a design with and without the security aspect can be respectively analyzed, and the performance cost of this aspect can be predicted. Part of the translating algorithms is presented and the FDAF approach is illustrated by using the Domain Name System.
