Software Engineering Paradigm Independent Design Problems, GoF 23 Design Patterns, and aspect Design

The aim of the paper is to investigate applicability of object-oriented software design patterns in the context of aspect-oriented design. The paper analyses which of the GoF 23 patterns have a meaning in this context and how they are affected by it. The main assumption is that there exist design patterns that solve software engineering paradigm independent design problems and that such patterns, in the contrast to the patterns solving paradigm-specific design problems, can be expressed in terms of any software engineering paradigm. However, the paper deals only with two paradigms: aspect-oriented (AO) paradigm and object-oriented (OO) paradigm. It proposes a classification of design problems based on this assumption and a technique for redesigning object-oriented patterns into pure aspect-oriented ones. It presents a number of examples how to apply this technique and discusses the results obtained. The results show that 20 of the GoF 23 design patterns solve such design problems that are common at least for both mentioned paradigms and demonstrate in which way these patterns can be adapted for the needs of aspect-oriented design.

The existing techniques for software testing can be used to perform only a particular type of testing, and moreover proficiency is required to write the automation test scripts using these techniques. This paper proposes a novel software testing approach using aspect-oriented programming (AOP) that alone suffices for carrying out most of the types of software testing and thus obliterates the need of using distinctive tools for different types of testing. Nevertheless, AOP is a new programming paradigm and not all testers have the proficiency of working with it. Hence, a domain-specific language named Testing aspect Generator Language (TAGL) was developed which has got a very low learning curve. Using TAGL, testers can write the testing code in the form of natural language-like statements. Further, the lexical analyzer and parser, written using lex and yacc, convert the TAGL statements into actual testing code in the form of AOP. The proposed approach was applied for the testing of widely used open source projects and remarkable bugs were detected into them. A detailed comparison as to how our approach is effective than the conventional testing techniques is provided.

Application-specific models and pointcuts using a logic metalanguage

In contemporary aspect-oriented languages, pointcuts are usually specified directly in terms of the structure of the source code. The definition of such low-level pointcuts requires aspect developers to have a profound understanding of the entire application's implementation and often leads to complex, fragile and hard-to-maintain pointcut definitions. To resolve these issues, we present an aspect-oriented programming system that features a logic-based pointcut language that is open such that it can be extended with application-specific pointcut predicates. These predicates define an application-specific model that serves as a contract that base program developers provide and aspect developers can depend upon. As a result, pointcuts can be specified in terms of this more high-level model of the application which confines all intricate implementation details that are otherwise exposed in the pointcut definitions themselves. Tools and techniques for non-invasive explicit parallelization

This paper presents an overview of our experiments in integrating modern software engineering tools and techniques with the process of developing parallel applications for distributed memory architectures. The main goal was to determine the methods that have the potential of reducing the complexities associated with explicit parallelization. We experimented with template metaprogramming, aspect-oriented programming, program transformation engine, and a domain-specific language called Hi-PaL. The pros and cons of using each technique for explicit parallelization are presented in this paper. Our experiments demonstrate that through a combination of modern software engineering tools and techniques, the effort involved in explicit parallelization can be reduced by 90 % without any significant loss in performance.

Integration testing of Object-oriented and aspect-oriented programs: A structural pairwise approach for Java

Several testing approaches focus on finding faults in software units of implementation. A problem not addressed by unit testing is the interaction among units, with respect to the correctness of their interfaces. In this paper a structural integration testing approach for Object-oriented (00) and aspect-oriented (AO) Java programs is presented. To make the activity more feasible, we address the testing of pairs of units (i.e., methods and pieces of advice). A model called PWDU (PairWise Def-Use) graph to represent the flow of control and data between pairs of units is proposed. Based on the PWDU, the following family of testing criteria is defined: all-pairwise-integrated-nodes (control-flow based), all-pairwise-integrated-edges (control-flow based), and all-pairwise-integrated-uses (data-flow based). To evaluate the proposed approach, an implementation of the criteria in a testing tool is presented along with an example of usage and an exploratory study. The study with 7 AO programs that are also 00 was conducted to investigate the cost of application and usefulness of the approach. Results provided evidence that the criteria are practical and useful for integration testing of 00 and AO programs. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In the past, researchers have developed specialized programs to aid programmers in detecting concurrent programming errors such as deadlocks, livelocks, starvation, and data races. In this work, we propose a language extension to the aspect-oriented programming language aspectJ, in the form of three new pointcuts, lock(), unlock(), and maybeShared(). These pointcuts allow programmers to monitor program events where locks are granted or handed back, and where values are accessed that may be shared among multiple Java threads. We decide thread locality using a static thread-local-objects analysis developed by others. Using the three new primitive pointcuts, researchers can directly implement efficient monitoring algorithms to detect concurrent-programming errors online. As an example, we describe a new algorithm which we call RACER, an adaption of the well-known ERASER algorithm to the memory model of Java. We implemented the new pointcuts as an extension to the aspectBench Compiler, implemented the RACER algorithm using this language extension, and then applied the algorithm to the NASA K9 Rover Executive and two smaller programs. Our experiments demonstrate that our implementation is effective in finding subtle data races. In the Rover Executive, RACER finds 12 data races, with no false warnings. Only one of these races was previously known.

Weaving temporal and reliability aspects into a schema tapestry

In aspect-oriented programming (AOP) a cross-cutting concern is implemented in an aspect. An aspect weaver blends code from the aspect into a program's code at programmer-specified cut points, yielding an aspect-enhanced program. In this paper, we apply some of the concepts from the AOP paradigm to data. Like code, data also has cross-cutting concerns such as versioning, security, privacy, and reliability. We propose modeling a cross-cutting data concern as a schema aspect. A schema aspect describes the structure of the metadata in the cross-cutting concern, identifies the types of data elements that can be wrapped with metadata, i.e., the cut points, and provides some simple constraints on the use of the metadata. Several schema aspects can be applied to a single data collection, though in this paper we focus on just two aspects: a reliability aspect and a temporal aspect. We show how to weave the schema for these two aspects together with the schema for the data into a single, unified schema that we call a schema tapestry. The tapestry guides the construction, interpretation, and validation of an aspect-enhanced data collection. Published by Elsevier B.V.

Dynamic slicing of distributed aspect-oriented Programs: A context-sensitive approach

This paper presents a dynamic parallel context-sensitive slicing algorithm for distributed AOPs. The context sensitivity makes the computed slice more precise and accurate. We introduce parallelism in our algorithm to make slice computation faster. We have developed a tool called D-aspectJ slider to compute dynaMic slices for distributed AOPs. The proposed slicing technique is compared with two other related existing techniques using ten case studies. The experimentation shows that our proposed slicing algorithm generates smaller slices in less time as compared to other two existing algorithms.

Building fully customisable middleware using an aspect-oriented approach

Applications accrue features in response to the needs of all users, yet the associated code bloating and performance loss often render an application unsuitable for some other users whose needs differ. As a result, developers are often faced with either reinventing pieces of an application, custom tailored to their needs, or they are faced with the daunting task of refactoring an existing application to obtain an appropriate subset of that application's functionality. In either case, subsequent development, maintenance and testing of the application becomes more complex, due to the effects of future revisions on all of the derived subsets. In the paper, the authors report their experience of using aspect-oriented programming in building a CORBA event channel using a compositional approach to building software. Instead of refactoring a large, feature-rich application, a feature can be added by including that feature's aspect in the set provided to an aspect compiler. In addition to generic feature management, a study of the effect of the transport layer (CORBA) on overall performance of the event channel is conducted. Finally, experimental results on how such an approach gives fine control over footprint and throughput performance is presented.

Identifying crosscutting concerns using fan-in analysis

aspect mining is a reverse engineering process that aims at finding crosscutting concerns in existing systems. This article proposes an aspect mining approach based on determining methods that are called from many different places, and hence have a high fan-in, which can be seen as a symptom of crosscutting functionality. The approach is semiautomatic, and consists of three steps: metric calculation, method filtering, and call site analysis. Carrying out these steps is an interactive process supported by an Eclipse plug-in called FINT. Fan-in analysis has been applied to three open source Java systems, totaling around 200,000 lines of code. The most interesting concerns identified are discussed in detail, which includes several concerns not previously discussed in the aspect-oriented literature. The results show that a significant number of crosscutting concerns can be recognized using fan-in analysis, and each of the three steps can be supported by tools.
