Model-Driven Development (MDD) aims to shift the focus of soft-ware development activity from coding to modeling. However, managing relationships and specifying transformations between models at various levels of abstraction are complex tasks. System models tangled with concerns such as security make it difficult to develop complex systems and specify model transformations. aspect-oriented programming (AOP) is an emerging software engineering paradigm that improves separation of cross-cutting concerns as aspect in a program. At present, the AOP paradigm has expanded to all the lifecycle of the software development, as a result, aspect-oriented Software Development (AOSD) is becoming a new technique, which has an important step of modeling the aspects. We present, In this paper, a Sequence Diagram describes the aspectual Sequence Model based on the Unified Modeling Language (UML) to identify the crosscutting concerns in the framework of Model-Driven Architecture (MDA), and using a mature language aspectJ to write aspect codes.

The recent complexity of high-performance computing (HPC) systems to create efficient programs is becoming more difficult because of the lagging of processors' performance. Domain Specific Language (DSL) is a promising approach that offers a productive environment and creates a high-efficient program. However, DSLs lack portability and make developers incur high costs. An aspect-oriented programming (AOP) based platform for building DSL processing systems is proposed to solve the problem. By combining reusable aspect modules, DSL processing systems can be built into each HPC system to assist developers in creating programs with various systems configurations. The platform is achieved by putting the application programming interface into the user's kernel code and controlling the kernel's execution according to the platform conventions. However, the platform has some problems. It is impossible to perform optimization that intervenes in the kernel code. It is also impossible to use SIMD and GPGPU efficiently. This study proposes a modification of the kernel code by introducing a Just-In-Time (JIT) compilation system into the platform and using SIMD and GPGPU. We also created benchmarks and confirmed a performance improvement of 94% for reducing the execution time compared with the based platform and an improvement of 9% compared with handwritten code for auto compiler optimization.

The measurement is an important field in the software engineering. This field studies the assignment of a value to a software attribute using metrics. In fact, the use of metrics, which are the defined measurement methods and the measurement scales, in software engineering allows among other goals to control the quality of the software products, the quality of the software processes or the evolution of the software projects. Usually, we distinct two kinds of metrics: the static and the dynamic ones. The static metrics can be obtained from the source code of the software. On the other side, the dynamic metrics requires the execution of the software. Consequently, the static metrics are the most applied because of their relative simplicity compared to the dynamic metrics. However, we think that the dynamic metrics are more appropriate in some software categories. Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) is one of these categories because of the flexible nature of the agents. Consequently, we propose in this paper the using of the aspect-oriented programming (AOP) to measure the dynamic metrics of multi-agent systems. In fact, the proposed approach provides several advantages like the simplicity, the reusability and the extensibility. In order to validate the proposed approach, we developed a tool that allows measuring of some metrics of DIMA-based applications.

In recent years, aspect oriented programming (AOP) has become an emerging technology due to its ability to support the separation of concerns in software development. In particular, AOP allows application requirements to be implemented in separated modules while weaving them together without code tangling. However, this feature also raises a concern about the quality and reliability of AOP programs. Most specifically, the AOP programming constructs, such as join point, pointcut, advice, and aspect, can change the dynamic behavior(1) of original base modules and need to be tested thoroughly to ensure the correctness of AOP programs. In this paper, we propose a state-based testing approach for AOP programs. The approach considers the state-based behavior(2) changes introduced by different advices in multiple aspects. A test model is presented to abstract the state-based behavior of AOP program with the consideration of the interactions between the base modules and aspects. Based on the model, test cases can be derived so as to uncover the potential state behavior errors in the AOP programs. In addition, an example is provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

In the last few years several new programming techniques for achieving a better separation of concerns have been defined. One of the most accepted has been aspect-oriented programming (AOP). Those attending this tutorial will learn how to improve the modularization, maintainability and evolution of secure applications by using AOP to achieve a better separation of the security concerns (e.g. authentication, authorization, encryption). A running example will be used throughout the tutorial to illustrate how AOP works. The tutorial will principally illustrate the use of the aspectJ programming language, although other AOP languages will be used to cover features that are not included in aspectJ. As a proof of concept we will discuss the use of AOP in the context of the INTER-TRUST project, a STREP project that brings together experts from the security and aspect-oriented research communities to demonstrate that security policies can be dynamically deployed and adapted at runtime using AOP.

aspect-oriented programming (AOP) aims at modularising crosscutting concerns that show up in software. The success of AOP has been almost viral and nearly all areas in Software Engineering and programming Languages have become "infected" by the AOP bug in one way or another. Interestingly the functional programming community (and, in particular, the pure functional programming community) seems to be resistant to the pandemic. The goal of this paper is to debate the possible causes of the functional programming community's resistance and to raise awareness and interest by showcasing the benefits that could be gained from having a functional AOP language. At the same time, we identify the main challenges and explore the possible design-space.

aspect-oriented software development is an approach which addresses the construction of software artifacts that traditional software engineering constructs fail to modularize: the so-called crosscutting concerns. However, although aspect-orientation claims to permit a better modularization of crosscutting concerns, it is still not clear whether the development time for such crosscutting concerns is increased or decreased by the application of aspect-oriented techniques. This paper addresses this issue by an experiment which compares the development times of crosscutting concerns using traditional composition techniques and aspect-oriented composition techniques using the object-oriented programming language Java and the aspect-oriented programming language aspectJ. In that way, the experiment reveals opportunities and risks caused by aspect-oriented programming techniques in comparison to object-oriented ones.

The paper presents a method to build a distributed real-time operating system for distributed embedded control systems using aspect-oriented programming. We define aspects to weave distributed computing mechanisms to an existing real-time operating system. By using the aspects, we can build a distributed operating system without modifying the original source code. This improves the maintainability of the source code of a real-time operating system family. We have applied the aspects to an OSEK OS and have got a distributed operating system that provides location-transparent system calls for task management and inter-task synchronization. The evaluation results show that the overhead of aspect-oriented programming is practically small enough.

The separation of concerns as a conceptual paradigm, aims to manage the complexity of the software systems by dividing them into different concerns and aspects. The benefits of this paradigm such as adaptability, reuse and maintenance, have been key drivers of its adoption and usability. These quality attributes have been discussed in aspect-oriented programming (AOP) which is a complement to traditional programming methods, whether object-oriented programming or procedural programming. The main concept of AOP is to gather the treatments related to a specific concern (problem) in a centralized unit called aspect. In this paper, two case studies of AOP are conducted with aspectJ: i) through three different implementations, addressing three distinct issues: Logging, Adding features and Using the Observer design pattern, and ii) through the design of aspect mobile application that is easy to use and quickly accessible and especially through Android devices. Also, the different technologies of aspectJ are used to design our application and illustrate the modularity and the composition of components (database manager, development software, and plugins). For each case study, we present the advantages and disadvantages to better understand and decompose the applications using this programming paradigm. Potential implementation examples are provided to support the explanation of the different situations and justify the use of the AOP to solve these issues. OSGi framework can also be used in the future work to offer dynamic manner of mobile applications.

Synchronization is an important problem in the design and development of the software, which has been resolved in the object-oriented programming (OOP). However, the implementation of OOP is easy to leads to code-tangling and code-scattering between functional properties and crosscutting properties. aspect-oriented programming (AOP) can solve the problem of code-tangling and code-scatterting, and provide a mechanism of the modularization of crosscutting properties. Synchronization, as a typical aspect, is resolved based on AOP in this paper. Taking the classical producer-consumer problem as a case study, this paper identifies the synchronization as a crosscutting concern, modularizes it as an aspect and implements the program with aspectJ. The execution result shows AOP can not only resolve the problem of synchronization, but also gain the effect of modularization better than OOP. Furthermore, compared execution time of AOP program with that of OOP program, the result shows that the execution time of AOP is similar to OOP.
