This paper reports our experience using aspectJ, a general-purpose aspect-oriented extension to Java, to implement distribution and persistence aspects in a web-based information system. This system was originally implemented in Java and restructured with aspectJ. Our main contribution is to show that aspectJ is useful for implementing several persistence and distribution concerns in the application considered, and other similar applications. We have also identified a few drawbacks in the language and suggest some minor modifications that could significantly improve similar implementations. Despite the drawbacks, we argue that the aspectJ implementation is superior to the pure Java implementation. Some of the aspects implemented in our experiment are abstract and constitute a simple aspect framework. The other aspects are application specific but we suggest that different implementations might follow the same aspect pattern. The framework and the pattern allow us to propose architecture-specific guidelines that provide practical advice for both restructuring and implementing certain kinds of persistent and distributed applications with aspectJ.

Despite the scientific community's interest in developing Three-Dimensional Virtual Environments (3D VEs) for various purposes, collecting interaction data automatically is still a challenge. In general, the logs of the interactions are performed directly in the application source code in a specific way. In order to make the process automatic and efficient, it is necessary to register information in real time during the virtual environment exploration and with no changes in the application source code. This paper presents the results of an experimental study from a non-intrusive system for monitoring the interactions of users in 3D VE. The results showed that the monitoring system implemented based on the aspect-oriented programming (AOP) is efficient to facilitate data collection and allows monitoring interactions that occur automatically, without interfering in the application source code. It was also possible to identify in the context of the experiment that there is evidence that some types of user interactions with VEs are correlated with the user's learning level.

aspect-oriented programming (AOP) is a programming technique for modularizing concerns that crosscut the basic functionality of programs. In AOP, aspect languages are used to describe properties, which crosscut basic functionality, in a clean and a modular way. AOP is currently supported mostly by aspect weavers, which require a source code for both components and aspects in order to create the final program. In this paper we have presented our approach to aspect weaving in order to achieve separate compilation. This approach to aspect weaving is used in the languages COOL and aspectCOOL, which are also presented in the paper. With this approach it is possible to apply aspects on already compiled components.

Most software systems are inflexible. Reconfiguring a system's modules to add or to delete a feature requires substantial effort. This inflexibility increases the costs of building variants of a system, amongst other *** languages and tools that are being developed to provide additional support for separating concerns show promise to help address this problem. However, applying these mechanisms requires determining how to enable a feature to be separated from the codebase. In this paper, we investigate this problem through an exploratory study conducted in the context of two existing systems: *** and jFTPd. The study consisted of applying three different separation of concern mechanisms—Hyper/J,TM aspectJ,TM and a lightweight, lexically-based approach—to separate features in the two packages. In this paper, we report on the study, providing contributions in two areas. First, we characterize the effect different mechanisms had on the structure of the codebase. Second, we characterize the restructuring process required to perform the separations. These characterizations can help researchers to elucidate how the mechanisms may be best used, tool developers to design support to aid the separation process, and early adopters to apply the techniques.

This report summarizes the outcomes of the 9th Workshop on aspect-oriented Modeling (AOM) held in conjunction with the 9th International Conference on Model Driven Engineering Languages and Systems – MoDELS 2006 – in Genoa, Italy, on the 1st of October 2006. The workshop brought together approximately 25 researchers and practitioners from two communities: aspect-oriented software development and software model engineering. It provided a forum for discussing the state of the art in modeling crosscutting concerns at different stages of the software development process: requirements elicitation and analysis, software architecture, detailed design, and mapping to aspect-oriented programming constructs. This paper gives an overview of the accepted submissions and summarizes the results of the different discussion groups. Papers and presentation slides of the workshop are available at .

Android-SRV: Scenario-Based Runtime Verification of Android Applications

With the wide-spread usage of Android systems, Android applications have become the target of mobile malwares. Therefore, an effective verification approach for Android applications is essential. Runtime verification based on monitors is one of the most promising techniques to check the softwares behaviors. Currently, there are a number of monitoring approaches for Android applications. However, these approaches mainly have two limitations. First, there is no effective mechanism to reduce the load on Android applications caused by monitors. Second, these approaches mainly rely on logic-based specifications, which are complex and not intuitive for being used in practice. In order to address these two limitations, this paper proposes a scenario-based runtime verification approach for Android applications (called Android-SRV). The approach concentrates on providing a dynamic and usable solution for monitoring applications during execution with the help of aspect-oriented programming. It will translate the scenario-based specification (called property sequence charts (PSCs)) into multi-valued automata (MAs), and then generate aspectJ codes from the MA. Finally, these aspectJ codes are weaved into the target system as monitors. Considering the impact of the monitors on performance load in the Android system, the paper proposes local and cloud collaboration mechanisms to reduce the impact. The scenario-based specification is more intuitive than the traditional logic-based specifications. The approach is shown to be an effective means for monitoring Android applications with controlled overload.

Design patterns offer flexible solutions to common problems in software development. Recent studies have shown that several design patterns involve crosscutting concerns. Unfortunately, object-oriented (OO) abstractions are often not able to modularize those crosscutting concerns, which in turn decrease the system reusability and maintainability. Hence, it is important verifying whether aspect-oriented approaches support improved modularization of crosscutting concerns relative to design patterns. Ideally, quantitative studies should be performed to compare OO and aspect-oriented implementations of classical patterns with respect to important software engineering attributes, such as coupling and cohesion. This paper presents a quantitative study that compares aspect-based and OO solutions for the 23 Gang-of-Four patterns. We have used stringent software engineering attributes as the assessment criteria. We have found that most aspect-oriented solutions improve separation of pattern-related concerns, although only 4 aspect-oriented implementations have exhibited significant reuse.

This paper presents component-based and aspect-oriented methodology and tool for designing and developing Real-Time Embedded Control Systems (RTECS). This methodology defines a component model for describing modular and reusable software to cope with the increasing complexity of embedded systems. It proposes an aspect-oriented approach to address explicitly the extra-functional concerns of RTECS, to describe separately transversal real time and security constraints, and to support model properties analysis. The benefits of this methodology are shown via an example of Legway control software, a version of the Segway vehicle built with Lego Mindstorms NXT.

Mission critical applications and legacy systems may be difficult to revise and rebuild, and yet it is sometimes desirable to retrofit their user interfaces with new collaborative features without modifying and recompiling the original code. We describe the use of aspect-oriented programming as a lightweight technique to accomplish this, present an example of incorporating presence awareness deeply into an application's user interface, and discuss the implications of this technique for developing CSCW software.

Internet of Everything is aiming in connecting everything with internet. It is an extended concept of Internet of things. Hence, Internet of Everything systems are more complex comparative to internet of things systems. Modeling these Internet of Everything based systems is tricky. When there are fuzzy values involved in modeling any system then it is better to use fuzzy logic modeling. Fuzzy logic provides better and more accurate results comparative to traditional modeling approaches. Every modeling approach has its own strengths and weak nesses. In this paper we propose a framework for modeling cognitive fuzzy Internet of Everything systems. This framework uses concepts of Agent-based Modeling, Network-based Modeling, Fuzzy-logic Modeling and aspect-oriented Modeling. For the proof of concept, we used a scenario example of an Internet of Everything system. We modeled the scenario using our framework. We identified different agents from the scenario, we extracted different symmetric and asymmetric relations and showed relations amongagents in graphical representation. We implemented the fuzzy logic inference using Matlab Fuzzy logic toolbox for proof of concept. This framework provides a mechanism for more detailed Cognitive Fuzzy Internet of Everything models.
