In this Letter, we propose a scheme to control the evolution of a two-level quantum system in the strong-coupling regime, based on the idea of reverse engineering. A coherent control field is designed to drive the system along a user-predefined evolution trajectory without utilizing the rotating-wave approximation. As concrete examples, we show that complete population inversion, an equally weighted coherent superposition, and even oscillation-like dynamics can be achieved. Since there are no limitations on the coupling strength between the control field and matter, the scheme is attractive for applications such as accelerating desired system dynamics and fast quantum information processing. Three-dimensional phase unwrapping using the Hungarian algorithm

We propose a three-dimensional phase unwrapping technique that uses the Hungarian algorithm to join together all the partial residual loops that may occur in a wrapped phase volume. Experimental results have shown that the proposed algorithm is more robust and reliable than other well-known three-dimensional phase unwrapping algorithms. Additionally, the proposed algorithm is fast in terms of computational complexity, which makes it suitable for practical applications. (C) 2009 Optical Society of America

Straightforward discretization of the equations of motion of a quasi-continuum interacting with an electromagnetic field often leads to physical and numerical difficulties. We derive two distinct methods for reducing the number of energy levels that must be treated explicitly in such calculations. One of these applies to bands of quasi-continua with slowly decreasing shoulders; the other, to bands with rapidly decreasing shoulders.

CN (Canadian National Railway) is the largest railway in Canada and a leader in the North American rail industry. In the bids and bulletins evaluation process, 7,500 CN employees submit their job preferences as bids and are assigned jobs in a manner to ensure that all positions are filled. Each week, CN posts bulletins describing the available jobs and their requirements. On the basis of the bulletins, employees submit a bid card that identifies and ranks the jobs in which they"re most interested. The bidding period runs for seven days. Forty-eight hours after the bidding period closes, job assignments are posted and become effective. A legacy software system, coded in Cobol, assigns the jobs, but regional schedulers must manage exceptions and infeasibilities. Typically, to achieve a publishable schedule, the software must be run several times, with manual overrides. Because the legacy system is slow, schedulers sometimes resort to personalized spreadsheets to assist decision making. CN is pursuing a phased implementation of SAP enterprise systems. As the company phases out legacy software, it"s looking for new ways to leverage information technology to improve operations and increase employee satisfaction.

Load balance algorithm for an OPSquare datacenter network under real application traffic

To cope with the dynamic datacenter (DC) traffic matrix generated by multiple applications, load balancing algorithms can be deployed to improve the datacenter network (DCN) performance. OPSquare, as a promising optical DCN architecture, adopts fast optical switches to provide high bandwidth, low latency, large scalability, and cost and energy efficiency. Current load balancing algorithms are not optimal for improving the network performance of an OPSquare DCN. To optimize the network performance of OPSquare, a dedicated load balancing algorithm considering the peculiarity of OPSquare should be addressed. Moreover, network virtualization in today's data DC creates new heterogeneous traffic patterns different from what so far have been reported in the literature. A synthetic virtualized DC traffic model is needed to properly evaluate the performance of the load balancing algorithms. In this paper, we provide a synthetic traffic model by capturing the traffic traces of the virtualized DC applications running in a DC. The captured traffic model is used in the simulator to quantitatively evaluate the network performance of an OPSquare DCN. Then we propose and evaluate the lowest path buffer (LPB) algorithm to optimize the OPSquare DCN performance. LPB considers the buffer occupation in the whole path (from the source to the destination) rather than the local buffer occupation. The network performance improvements of LPB are demonstrated under different central controller update periods, traffic destination distributions, and network sizes. Compared with the round-robin, DRILL, and LocalFlow load balancing algorithms, LPB could achieve 23.7%, 46%, and 32.1% less latency, respectively. Besides, LPB provides lower packet loss in comparison with round-robin, DRILL, and LocalFlow. (C) 2020 Optical Society of America

Active visual continuous seam tracking based on adaptive feature detection and particle filter tracking

Welding seam tracking based on online programming is the future trend of intelligent production. However, most of the existing image processing methods have certain limitations in the adaptability, accuracy, and robustness of weld feature point detection. The online welding method of gas metal arc welding (GMAW) based on active vision sensing is studied in this paper. The Steger sub -pixel detection method is used to guarantee the accuracy of feature point extraction, and a self -adaptive search window and self -adaptive slope extraction are proposed on this basis. The self -adaptive window is generated according to the linear information of the weld area, and the scale factor and range threshold constraint are added to realize the real-time detection of the weld feature information. Screening the center pixel of the laser stripe in the self -adaptive window of the current frame by the initial slope or the self -adaptive slope of the previous frame, the linear information of the weld area is obtained. The self -adaptive slope of the current frame is fitted by the random sampling consistency method, and the pixel margin is retained to adapt to the linear detection of different continuous welds. When arc light and other serious interference make it difficult to obtain weld information, a particle filter is used to make the best prediction of the weld position. Finally, the welding robot platform based on laser vision sensing was built to test various continuous welds of the butt weld, fillet weld, and lap weld. Experimental results show that the detection speed is 27 ms, and the accuracy of detection and tracking can respectively reach 0.03 mm and 0.78 mm, which meets the requirements of weld detection and tracking. Fully-automatic deep learning-based analysis for determination of the invasiveness of breast cancer cells in an acoustic trap

A single-beam acoustic trapping technique has been shown to be very useful for determining the invasiveness of suspended breast cancer cells in an acoustic trap with a manual calcium analysis method. However, for the rapid translation of the technology into the clinic, the development of an efficient/accurate analytical method is needed. We, therefore, develop a fully-automatic deep learning-based calcium image analysis algorithm for determining the invasiveness of suspended breast cancer cells using a single-beam acoustic trapping system. The algorithm allows to segment cells, find trapped cells, and quantify their calcium changes over time. For better segmentation of calcium fluorescent cells even with vague boundaries, a novel deep learning architecture with multi-scale/multi-channel convolution operations (MM-Net) is devised and constructed by a target inversion training method. The MM-Net outperforms other deep learning models in the cell segmentation. Also, a detection/quantification algorithm is developed and implemented to automatically determine the invasiveness of a trapped cell. For the evaluation of the algorithm, it is applied to quantify the invasiveness of breast cancer cells. The results show that the algorithm offers similar performance to the manual calcium analysis method for determining the invasiveness of cancer cells, suggesting that it may serve as a novel tool to automatically determine the invasiveness of cancer cells with high-efficiency. Two -photon Ca 2 + imaging technology increasingly plays an essential role in neuroscience research. However, the requirement for extensive professional annotation poses a significant challenge to improving the performance of neuron segmentation models. Here, we present NeuroSeg-III, an innovative self -supervised learning approach specifically designed to achieve fast and precise segmentation of neurons in imaging data. This approach consists of two modules: a self -supervised pre -training network and a segmentation network. After pre -training the encoder of the segmentation network via a self -supervised learning method without any annotated data, we only need to fine-tune the segmentation network with a small amount of annotated data. The segmentation network is designed with YOLOv8s, FasterNet, efficient multi -scale attention mechanism (EMA), and bi-directional feature pyramid network (BiFPN), which enhanced the model's segmentation accuracy while reducing the computational cost and parameters. The generalization of our approach was validated across different Ca 2 + indicators and scales of imaging data. Significantly, the proposed neuron segmentation approach exhibits exceptional speed and accuracy, surpassing the current state-of-the-art benchmarks when evaluated using a publicly available dataset. The results underscore the effectiveness of NeuroSeg-III, with employing an efficient training strategy tailored for two -photon Ca 2 + imaging data and delivering remarkable precision in neuron segmentation. Efficient algorithms for the accurate propagation of extreme-resolution holograms

Display-sized full-parallax holograms with large viewing angles require resolutions surpassing tens of Gigapixels. Unfortunately, computer-generated holography is computationally intensive, particularly for these huge display resolutions. Existing algorithms designed for diffraction of typical Megapixel-sized holograms do not scale well for these large resolutions. Furthermore, since the holograms will not fit in the RAM of most of today's computers, the algorithms should be modified to minimize disk access. We propose two novel algorithms respectively for short-distance and long-distance propagation, and accurately compute the diffraction of a 17.2 Gigapixel hologram on a standard desktop machine. We report a 500-fold speedup over the reference rectangular tiling algorithm for the short-distance version, and a 50-fold speedup for the long-distance version. Performance evaluation of data center service localization based on virtual resource migration in software defined elastic optical network

Data center interconnection with elastic optical network is a promising scenario to meet the high burstiness and high-bandwidth requirements of data center services. In our previous work, we implemented cross stratum optimization of optical network and application stratums resources that allows to accommodate data center services. In view of this, this study extends the data center resources to user side to enhance the end-to-end quality of service. We propose a novel data center service localization (DCSL) architecture based on virtual resource migration in software defined elastic data center optical network. A migration evaluation scheme (MES) is introduced for DCSL based on the proposed architecture. The DCSL can enhance the responsiveness to the dynamic end-to-end data center demands, and effectively reduce the blocking probability to globally optimize optical network and application resources. The overall feasibility and efficiency of the proposed architecture are experimentally verified on the control plane of our OpenFlow-based enhanced SDN testbed. The performance of MES scheme under heavy traffic load scenario is also quantitatively evaluated based on DCSL architecture in terms of path blocking probability, provisioning latency and resource utilization, compared with other provisioning scheme.
