Efficient assignment algorithms to minimize operation cost for supply chain networks in agile manufacturing

While the production process evolves toward modularization and decentralization, the design of supply chain networks, in particular considering the agile manufacturing scenario, becomes challenging due to the following reasons: (1) supply chains that produce a network of components become large-scale;(2) the number of possible assignments is growing exponentially as the increasing choices of plants for components. In this paper, the assignment problem considers the strategic and tactical decisions together, which involves the mapping of components to geographically distributed plants, the selection of logistics services between the mapped plants, and the allocation of inventories in each plant. The goal of this paper is to find the optimal assignment with the minimum total cost under the constraint of production rate. We first mathematically formulate the problem as a mixed integer linear program. Then, by deriving the properties of pipelined production in supply chain networks, we develop dynamic programming algorithms to efficiently obtain the optimal assignments. By the consideration of high degree of pipelining, our techniques can make a good tradeoff between high production rate and low operation cost. Extensive computational experiments show that the proposed algorithms can find high quality solutions, which achieve significant improvement compared with the initiative approaches. The feasibility of software-defined optical networking (SDON) for a practical application critically depends on scalability of centralized control performance. The paper, highly scalable routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) algorithms are investigated on an OpenFlow-based SDON testbed for proof-of-concept demonstration. Efficient RWA algorithms are proposed to achieve high performance in achieving network capacity with reduced computation cost, which is a significant attribute in a scalable centralized-control SDON. The proposed heuristic RWA algorithms differ in the orders of request processes and in the procedures of routing table updates. Combined in a shortest-path-based routing algorithm, a hottest-request-first processing policy that considers demand intensity and end-to-end distance information offers both the highest throughput of networks and acceptable computation scalability. We further investigate trade-off relationship between network throughput and computation complexity in routing table update procedure by a simulation study. (C) 2015 Optical Society of America

Path-protection-based routing and wavelength assignment in wavelength-division multiplexing optical networks under a scheduled traffic model

We study the optimal survivability design problem under a scheduled traffic model in wavelength-convertible WDM optical mesh networks. In this model, a set of demands is given, and the setup and tear-down time of a demand are known in advance. We formulate the joint routing and wavelength assignment problems as integer linear problems that maximally exploit network resource reuse in both space and time. Moreover, we propose efficient heuristic algorithms with different demand-ordering policies to solve large survivable routing and wavelength assignment problems under the scheduled traffic model. Our simulation results indicate that the optimization of resource sharing in space and time enabled by our connection-holding-time-aware protection schemes can achieve significantly better resource utilization than schemes that are holding-time unaware. In addition, the proposed heuristic algorithms are shown to be indeed very effective. (C) 2006 Optical Society of America.

Quantum key distribution (QKD) networks are promising to progress towards widespread practical deployment over existing fiber infrastructures in the near future. Given the high cost and difficulty of deploying QKD networks, multi-tenancy becomes promising to improve cost efficiency for future QKD networks. In a multi-tenant QKD network, multiple QKD tenants can sham the same QKD network infrastructure to obtain secret keys for securing their data transfer. Since the secret-key resources are finite and precious in QKD networks, how to achieve efficient multi-tenant secret-key assignment (MTKA) to satisfy the secret-key demands of multiple QKD tenants over QKD networks becomes a significant problem. In this regard, this study addresses the MTKA problem over QKD networks. A new multi-tenant QKD network architecture is proposed based on software defined networking (SDN) and quantum key pool (QKP) techniques. A secret-key rate sharing scheme is presented and a heuristic algorithm is designed to implement efficient MTKA over QKD networks. A new performance metric, namely matching degree (MD) that reflects the balance between QKD network secret-key resources and QKD tenant requests, is defined and evaluated. Simulation studies indicate that high QKD tenant requests accommodation and efficient secret-key resource usage can be achieved via maximizing the value of MD.
