Multi-tenant provisioning over software defined networking enabled metropolitan area quantum key distribution networks

Quantum key distribution (QKD) has potential to provide long-term security for communications across the Internet. As security-hungry applications dramatically rise nowadays, a growing number of QKD networks are promising to be deployed in the immediate future. Nevertheless, a high-security-demand institution (e.g., a bank) needs to pay a high price to deploy its dedicated QKD network, while a cost-effective way of overcoming this challenge is to make multiple tenants share a QKD network. Each tenant represents a high-security-demand institution and can obtain secret keys on demand from the QKD network infrastructure for security purposes. Hence, how to achieve efficient and flexible multi-tenant provisioning over a QKD network becomes a crucial problem. This work introduces software defined networking (SDN) to address this problem. We experimentally demonstrate multi-tenant provisioning (including tenant establishment, adjustment, and deletion) over SDN-enabled metropolitan area QKD networks. A SDN-enabled metropolitan area QKD network architecture is introduced. We present a workflow, protocol extensions, and an on-demand secret-key resource allocation strategy for multi-tenant provisioning, which are all demonstrated by establishing an experimental testbed in the lab. Experimental results verify the effectiveness and flexibility of our SDN-based approaches for multi-tenant provisioning over metropolitan area QKD networks. Moreover, we conduct the simulation and discover the ways of improving the success probability of multi-tenant provisioning over metropolitan area QKD networks. (C) 2019 Optical Society of America

Maximizing the delivered capacity of optical transponders by mining the SNR margin to a near-zero level is of critical importance for the economic viability of future optical networks. We examine this trend from the equipment design point of view and apply artificial intelligence to the problem of capacity maximization. The bottom-up approach is focused on providing the key metrics that are built on the fundamentals of network performance, whereas the top-down approach uses machine learning and policy-driven actions that have the promise to achieve an unprecedented level of control. These methods show promise in delivering a practical near-zero margin network deployment. (C) 2019 Optical Society of America

Joint Optimization for Multicast Provisioning in Mixed-Line-Rate Optical Networks With a Column Generation Approach

Mixed-line-rate (MLR) optical networks (e.g., 10/40/100 Gb/s) offer a new paradigm in backbone networks to meet the increasing traffic demands. They are considered as a transitional solution for future flexible and dynamic optical networks. In order to provision multicast in MLR optical networks, we need to address multicast routing, line rate selection, and wavelength assignment subproblems, while still respecting the maximum transmission reach. In this paper, we investigate the multicast provisioning problem, which aims at minimizing the total cost on transponder, wavelength channel, and wavelength usage. First, a lightpath-based joint integer linear programming (ILP) model is formulated to minimize the total cost. To overcome the scalability of this joint ILP model, a decomposition approach based on column generation is proposed, which achieves comparable results within an extremely short period of time. Extensive simulations are performed to study the impact on the total cost of multicast provisioning with the MLR regarding the number of multicast sessions, destinations, traffic amount, and network topologies. It is observed that the multicast provisioning with the MLR has significant total cost savings over the single line rate, especially in the scenarios of a large number of multicast sessions and in optical networks with small average nodal degree.

Distance-Adaptive Spectrum Resource Allocation Using Subtree Scheme for All-Optical Multicasting in Elastic Optical Networks

We propose and investigate a subtree scheme for all-optical multicast routing, modulation level and spectrum allocation (AOM-RMSA) in elastic optical networks. A multicast request is accommodated by several light-trees and each light-tree covers only a part of the destination set. We assume that all nodes are multicast capable and investigate the subtree scheme over the single light-tree scheme for the AOM-RMSA problem under both static and dynamic traffic scenarios. In the static scenario, we formulate an integer linear programming model to obtain the optimal solution. Then, we propose two time-efficient heuristic algorithms that construct subtrees according to the link-sharing ratio between the paths from source to two distinct destinations. The proposed algorithms improve the spectrum utilization by building subtrees that have smaller tree-spanning size and adopt higher level modulation formats. They have also effectively reduced the blocking probability compared to single light-tree schemes.
