asynchronous programming is having its "renaissance" moment in recent years. Created in the 1980s, it was in use for quite some time, but with the advent of multi-core processors, it has been sidestepped by multi-threaded programming, which was (for a long time) the de facto standard of performing concurrent computations. However, since the 2000s, more and more programming languages have begun to include the support for asynchronous programming, some built around asynchronicity from the start, others including it later in their evolution. In this paper, we explore the design and implementation of asynchronous programming in Kotlin, a multiplatform programming language from JetBrains, which uses coroutines for asynchronicity. Kotlin provides a compact built-in API for coroutine support, thus giving a lot of implementation freedom to the developer;this flexibility allows to transparently support different flavours of asynchronous programming within the same language. We overview existing approaches to asynchronous programming, zoom in and talk about coroutines in detail, and describe how they are used in Kotlin as the basis for asynchronous computations. Along the way, we show the flexibility of Kotlin coroutines, highlight several existing problems with asynchronicity, how they are fixed or worked-around in Kotlin, and also mention future directions asynchronous programming might explore.

As more and more people are using technology as means to communicate, learn, run businesses or just having fun, there is hidden pressure over the infrastructure that offers all these services to the end users. In order to provide a better service reliability there is a need of using technologies that take advantage of the underlying hardware such as asynchronous libraries which by design are using the hardware resources at their full capabilities. The question here is what asynchronous approach should be used? We can take use of Microsoft's asynchronous library implementation based on tasks manipulation: TPL (Task Parallel Library), create our own asynchronous library based on the ThreadPool or we can use a different approach by taking use of the Actor Model implemented by *** framework. This paper is making a performance comparison between two different asynchronous patterns implemented ***: task-based and actor-based, by comparing the timing results of the two approaches while realizing actions that can be found in any application: reading from database, data manipulation, saving in the database. In order to perform the analysis and to ensure the consistency of tests, two concurrent applications were developed, having the same data source one with the TPL library and the other with Akka. NET. The applications were run on four different architectures with different core and memory configurations;furthermore, a comprehensive analysis and discussion based on the obtained performance results was done and several conclusions were revealed. Advantages and drawbacks for each asynchronous technology were outlined, to support a decision that could be used in current applications.

Promises and async/await have become popular mechanisms for implementing asynchronous computations in JavaScript, but despite their popularity, programmers have difficulty using them. This paper identifies 8 anti-patterns in promise-based JavaScript code that are prevalent across popular JavaScript repositories. We present a light-weight static analysis for automatically detecting these anti-patterns. This analysis is embedded in an interactive visualization tool that additionally relies on dynamic analysis to visualize promise lifetimes and instances of anti-patterns executed at run time. By enabling the user to navigate between promises in the visualization and the source code fragments that they originate from, problems and optimization opportunities can be identified. We implement this approach in a tool called DrAsync, and found 2.6K static instances of anti-patterns in 20 popular JavaScript repositories. Upon examination of a subset of these, we found that the majority of problematic code reported by DrAsync could be eliminated through refactoring. Further investigation revealed that, in a few cases, the elimination of anti-patterns reduced the time needed to execute the refactored code fragments. Moreover, DrAsync's visualization of promise lifetimes and relationships provides additional insight into the execution behavior of asynchronous programs and helped identify further optimization opportunities.

Sloan Digital Sky Survey fifth-generation (SDSS-V) Local Volume Mapper (LVM) is a wide-field IFU survey that uses an array of four 160 mm telescopes. It provides IFU spectra over the optical range with R similar to 4,000 to reveal the inner components of galaxies and the evolution of the universe. Each telescope observes the science field or the calibration field independently, but all of them should be simultaneously synchronized with the science exposure. To minimize the moving parts, the LVM adopted the siderostat design with a field derotator. We designed the optimized control software for our LVM observation, lvmagp, which controls four focusers, three K-mirror derotators, one fiber selector, four mounts (siderostats), and seven guide cameras. It was built on its owen user interface and messaging protocol called actor and clu based on asynchronous programming. The lvmagp provides three key sequences: autofocus sequence, field acquisition sequence, and autoguide sequence. Also, we designed and fabricated the proto-model siderostat for the software test. The real sky test was made with proto-model siderostat, and the lvmagp showed arcsecond-level field acquisition and autoguide accuracy.

For a GUI to remain responsive, it must be able to schedule lengthy tasks to be executed asynchronously. In the traditional approach to GUI implementation-writing functions to handle individual user events-asynchronous programming easily leads to defects. Ensuring that all data dependencies are respected is difficult when new events arrive while prior events are still being handled. Reactive programming techniques, gaining popularity in GUI programming, help since they make data dependencies explicit and enforce them automatically as variables' values change. However, data dependencies in GUIs usually change along with its state. Reactive programming must therefore describe a GUI as a collection of many reactive programs, whose interaction the programmer must explicitly coordinate. This paper presents a declarative approach for GUI programming that relieves the programmer from coordinating asynchronous computations. The approach is based on our prior work on "property models", where GUI state is maintained by a dataflow constraint system. A property model responds to user events by atomically constructing new data dependencies and scheduling asynchronous computations to enforce those dependencies. In essence, a property model dynamically generates a reactive program, adding to it as new events occur. The approach gives the following guarantee: the same sequence of events produces the same results, regardless of the timing of those events.

Fragmentation of the often used numerical algorithms for inclusion into the library of parallel numerical subroutines are considered. Algorithms and programs fragmentation allow to create parallel programs that can be executed on parallel computers of different types (multiprocessors and/or multicomputers) and can be dynamically tuned to all the available resources. Programs' fragmentation is the way of automatic providing of the dynamic properties of parallel programs, like dynamic load balancing. Algorithm's fragmentation is a technological method of numerical algorithms parallelization which provides their effective parallel implementation.

We developed control software for an enclosure system of the SDSS-V Local Volume Mapper (LVM) which provides a contiguous 2,500 deg2 integral-field survey. The LVM enclosure, located at the Las Campanas Observatory in Chile, is a building that hosts the LVM instruments (LVM-I). The enclosure system consists of four main systems: 1) a roll-off dome, 2) building lights, 3) a Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system, and 4) a safety system. Two Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) as middleware software directly operate complex mechanisms of the dome and the HVAC via the Modbus protocol. The LVMECP is implemented by Python 3.9 following the SDSS software framework which adopted a protocol, called CLU, with message passing based on the RabbitMQ and Advanced Message Queuing Protocol (AMQP). Also, we applied asynchronous programming to our system to process multiple requests simultaneously. The Dome PLC system remotely sends commands for the operation of a roll-off dome and enclosure lights. The HVAC PLC system keeps track of changing environmental values of the HVAC system in real-time. This software provides observers with remote access by high-level commands.

Reactive programming languages and libraries, such as ReactiveX, have been shown to significantly improve software design and have seen important industrial adoption over the last years. asynchronous applications which are notoriously error-prone to implement and to maintain greatly benefit from reactive programming because they can be defined in a declarative style, which improves code clarity and extensibility. In this paper, we tackle the problem of refactoring existing software that has been designed with traditional abstractions for asynchronous programming. We propose 2Rx, a refactoring approach to automatically convert asynchronous code to reactive programming. Our evaluation on top-starred GitHub projects shows that 2Rx is effective with common asynchronous constructs and it can provide a refactoring for 91.7% of their occurrences.

Extending the size of electronic structure simulations is an ongoing effort at various levels of electronic structure theory. In tight-binding and density functional theory, the most expensive part of the computation is obtaining the density matrix, which traditionally scales cubically with the number of atoms. Tight-binding is a semi-empirical electronic structure method that is the least expensive among methods capable of resolving charge, energies and electronic wavefunctions at the atomistic level. While linearly scaling algorithms have been developed previously, the focus was on using localization or sparsity of the density matrix to obtain linear scaling. The disadvantage of this approach is that localization and sparsity are dependent on the basis-set choice, which is generally unknown apriori. Furthermore, calculations often also rely on matrix-matrix multiplication, which are harder to optimize over distributed nodes. Thus, we present a linearly scaling method that relies on sampling the density matrix via matrix-vector multiplication, by combining polynomial expansion and polynomial purification methods that are well-known in the tight-binding literature, allowing us to simulate multi-million atom systems on a large memory node on the campus cluster, as well as demonstrations of larger systems and faster, more accurate, simulations on the BlueWaters supercomputer. Next, we investigate the underlying microscopic mechanism for electron transfer in symmetric dielectric barrier discharge plasma generators (DBDs). DBDs are useful in a wide variety of applications where the plasma generated is used for materials processing, combustion, and flow control. Our interest is in determining the rate of electron emission from dielectrics under AC voltage. While phenomenological models have existed, a microscopic electronic-structure based model to compute and predict the rate of electron transfer from dielectric surfaces had not been presented so far.
