Euler-q algorithm for attitude determination from vector observations

A new cost function for optimal attitude definition and the Euler-q algorithm based on this cost function are presented. The optimality criterion is derived from the Euler axis rotational property and a!laws a fast and reliable computation of the optimal eigenaxls. The mathematical procedure leads to the eigenanalysis of a 3 x 3 symmetric matrix whose eigenvector, associated with the smallest eigenvalue, is the optimal Euler axis. This eigenvector is evaluated by a simple cross vector, and the singularity is avoided using the method of sequential rotations. The rotational error is then analyzed and defined, and an accuracy comparison test is performed between a previously accepted criterion of optimal attitude and the proposed one. Results show that the earlier definition of optimality is slightly more precise than Euler-q, which, in turn, demonstrates a clear gain in computational ***427

The quaternion estimation (QUEST) batch attitude-determination algorithm has been extended to work in a general Kalman-filter framework. This has been done to allow the inclusion of a complicated dynamics model and to allow the estimation of additional quantities beyond the attitude quaternion. The QUEST algorithm, which works with vector attitude observations, serves as a starting point because it is able to work with a poor (or no) first guess of the attitude. This paper's extended version of QUEST uses square-root information filtering techniques and linearization of the dynamics to propagate the state and its covariance. The measurement update problem is solved by a technique that is an extension of the original QUEST algorithm's eigenvalue/eigenvector solution. The paper demonstrates the new algorithm's performance on an attitude determination problem that uses star-tracker and rate-gyro measurements. The new algorithm is able to converge from initial attitude errors of 180 deg and initial rate-gyro bias errors as large as 2400 deg/h.

Deterministic Relative attitude determination of Three-Vehicle Formations

This paper proves that deterministic relative attitude determination is possible for a formation of three vehicles. The results provide an assessment of the accuracy of the deterministic attitude solutions, given statistical properties of the assumed noisy measurements. Each vehicle is assumed to be equipped with sensors to provide line-of-sight, and possibly range, measurements between them. Three vehicles are chosen because this is the minimum number required to determine all attitudes given minimal measurement information. Three cases are studied. The first determines the absolute (inertial) attitude of a vehicle knowing the absolute positions of the other two. The second assumes parallel beams between each vehicle to determine relative attitudes, and the third assumes nonparallel beams for relative attitude determination, which requires range information to find deterministic solutions. Covariance analyses are provided to gain insight on the stochastic properties of the attitude errors and the observability for all three cases.

Efficient and optimal attitude determination using recursive global positioning system signal operations

A new and efficient algorithm is developed for attitude determination from global positioning system signals. The new algorithm is derived from a generalized predictive filter for nonlinear systems. This uses a one time-step ahead approach to propagate a simple kinematics model for attitude determination. The advantages of the new algorithm over previously developed methods include: it provides optimal attitudes even for coplanar baseline configurations, it guarantees convergence even for poor initial conditions, it is a noniterative algorithm, and it is computationally efficient. These advantages clearly make the new algorithm well suited to onboard applications. The performance of the new algorithm is tested on a dynamic hardware simulator. Results indicate that the new algorithm accurately estimates the attitude of a moving vehicle and provides robust attitude estimates even when other methods, such as a linearized least-squares approach, fail due to poor initial starting conditions.

Dynamics-based attitude determination using the global positioning system

We present an algorithm for attitude determination using Global Positioning System (GPS) phase difference measurements. The problem is formulated as an optimization problem on the group of rotation matrices subject to the system's kinematic and dynamic equations of motion. We first formulate an objective function ir:hose update at each time step requires the integration of the dynamic equations and employs a forgetting factor to weight the history of accumulated CPS measurements. In the event that angular velocity measurements are not available, a cubic spline interpolation algorithm on the rotation group is used to estimate the angular, velocity from the available attitude measurements. A geometric version of Newton's algorithm on the rotation group is also employed for the optimization, together with a method for rapidly calculating a suboptimal solution to be used as the initial point in the iteration. Simulation results comparing the performance of the proposed algorithm with those that neglect the dynamics are given.

GNSS based attitude determination algorithms require highly accurate data about the geometry of receiver's antennas. Due to a variety of factors, such as heating and gravity, somewhat mechanical distortions occur in the baselines' configuration. In order to improve the performance of attitude estimation algorithm, it is of importance to determine the baseline biases arising from these distortions. However, notably in real-time applications computation of full-order models which include baseline biases may lead to a significant computational burden to the filter, resulting in a decrease in performance of algorithms. In this paper we've performed an analysis of the attitude estimation algorithm for the reduced-order models. Based on stochastic measure of observability we've examined the performance of the Kalman filter.

In this study, DCS orbit and attitude corrections for the Earth's oblateness are developed. According to the measurement principle, the Earth's pulses are simulated with the root criterion of the quadratic equation and bisection method, and the nadir direction determination algorithm in the presence of a flattening coefficient is developed. An algorithm for the least-square orbit determination and the two-vector attitude determination based on the orientation information of the sun, Earth, and moon is presented to illustrate the orbit and the attitude corrections for Earth oblateness. Numerical simulations verify the validity of the pulses simulation method, the nadir direction determination algorithm, and the orbit and attitude determinations that include correction for the Earth's oblateness.

Distribution of points on a sphere with application to star catalogs

A new framework is introduced to analyze the spatial distribution of stars in a catalog, namely, the Voronoi diagram/Delaunay triangulation. The Voronoi diagram is a subdivision of the celestial sphere into polygonal cells, one for each star, so that the cell for star P consists of the region on the sphere closer to P than to any other star. The Delaunay triangulation is the topological dual with the important property that each spherical cap circumscribing a triangle contains no stars in its interior. Measures of the uniformity in star density and geometric arrangement based on the Voronoi diagram/Delaunay triangulation are presented and compared with existing measures, Methods to generate uniformly distributed points on the sphere, which serve as useful test cases for stellar attitude determination analysis, are formulated and compared. One such method, based on a spherical spiral, is easy to implement and yields a very uniform distribution of points. Finally, the Voronoi density reduction method is introduced to select stars for an onboard catalog from a larger candidate set. The candidate with the smallest Voronoi cell is removed, and the Voronoi diagram of the reduced set is constructed. This process is repeated until the desired number of stars remains.
