The biological information extracted from various excitable tissues can be obtained by intracellular as well as by extra-cellular recordings, the latest one being easier and noninvasive method with many applications in medicine testing. Electrophysiological recording of the eye excitability is analyzed in the following computational study dedicated to the diagnosis, of the type of dynamics governing the compound eye of the superior invertebrates. The Drosophila Melanogaster representing a well consecrated biological model the optoelectronic transduction phenomena inside of its visual system have been investigated by means of the electroretinographic signal recording and analysis, The overlapping of linear and non-linear dynamical trend was evidenced following the application of several computational tests.

The information distortions during the signal processing at the receivers of a communication system are very undesirable, because they can be compensated only by means of increasing of transmitted energy. This leads to decreasing of system secrecy and its effectiveness. Due to this reason in our paper we suggest a mathematical algorithm for processing of communication signals, which can be executed by mass cheap microcontrollers with maximal possible accuracy and study the practical application of the algorithm in the present radar and communication systems.

Occurrence of circadian rhythms in hairy root cultures grown under controlled conditions

Hairy roots obtained by transformation via Agrobacterium rhizogenes provide an artificial plant material devoid of aerial parts with high growth on hormone-free media. Fundamental knowledge of hairy root physiology is essential to develop and control its culture. In contrast to shake-flask cultures, a bioreactor set-up combined with on-line data logging provides an efficient tool to study rapid physiological variations in hairy root cultures. Datura innoxia hairy roots were grown in a bioreactor equipped with on-line data analyses of pH, dissolved oxygen (pO(2)), conductivity, oxygen, and carbon dioxide. The experiments were done at a constant temperature and in the absence of light cues. The results obtained showed that the carbon dioxide evolution rate (CER) presented regular oscillations during the culture. Similar oscillations were also observed for the oxygen uptake rate (OUR). These signals were treated mathematically to look for the existence of a rhythm. An autocorrelation function was used to detect any periodic components. The results demonstrate that hairy root respiration exhibited peaks of 1 day. These oscillations, having a period of about 24 h, were also observed in pH and conductivity signals, although not for the pO(2) signal. The data acquired in the absence of hairy roots showed that the observed periodic behavior was not an artifact. No effect on rhythms was observed by the imposition of an external "day/night" cycle. The fact that oscillations persisted in the absence of external stimuli, with a free-running period of 24 h, suggests that a circadian rhythm exists in hairy roots of D. innoxia. The influences of stress on the interfacial reactions of Ti and Ni metal thin films on (0 0 I)Si have been investigated. Compressive stress present in the silicon substrate was found to retard significantly the growth of Ti and Ni silicide thin films. On the other hand, the tensile stress present in the silicon substrate was found to enhance the formation of Ti and Ni silicides. For Ti and Ni on stressed (0 0 I)Si substrates after rapid thermal annealing, the thicknesses of TiSi2 and NiSi films were found to decrease and increase with the compressive and tensile stress level, respectively. The results clearly indicated that the compressive stress hinders the interdiffusion of atoms through the metal/Si interface, so that the formation of metal silicide films was retarded. In contrast, tensile stress facilitates the interdiffusion of atoms. As a result, the growth of Ti and Ni silicide is promoted. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Model of m-level low-frequency current fluctuations in metal thermionic cathodes

A new model of low-frequency fluctuations, based on the thermionic current model [Mathematical Handbook for Scientists and Engineers, New York, 1961;Introduction to Statistical Radio-Physic. Part 1: Random Processes, Moscow, 1976 (in Russian)], has been designed. The proposed model provides calculation of realization, auto-correlation function (ACF) and power spectral density (PSD) of an m-level quantum signal. This model has allowed to explain the reason of very small magnitude of low-frequency (LF) boundary (10(-4) to 10(-2) Hz) on experimental spectra of LF current fluctuations in a metal thermionic cathodes. The structural evolution in Ge+ implantation amorphous Si has been investigated by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy in conjunction with auto-correlation function (ACF) analysis. Si(0 0 1) wafers were implanted with 5 keV Ge+ to a dose of 5 X 10(15) ions/cm(2). A high density of embedded nanocrystallites was found to be present in as-implanted amorphous Si. After 350 degreesC annealing, the density of nanocrystallites was found to decrease, but increase after annealing at 400 degreesC or higher temperatures. The observation indicated that the implanted silicon became more randomized upon annealing up to 350 degreesC. The results are discussed in terms of energy variation in the system. Experimental measurements to investigate the effects of atmospheric turbulence on two major parameters for laser adaptive optic (AO) system design (turbulence coherence length r(0) and the atmospheric time constant To) were carried out to cover weak, moderate and strong turbulence conditions prevailing in the city of Delhi (India). Diurnal and seasonal variation of atmospheric refractive index structure parameter (C-n(2)) near the ground was measured with a minimum and maximum recorded values of 2 x 10(-13) m(-2/3) and 10(-11) m(-2/3) respectively. Estimated values of r(0) range from 0.42 mm to 4.4 min (for 0.6328 mum wavelength of He-Ne laser), 0.8 mm to 8.3 mm (for 1.06 mum wavelength of Nd:YAG laser), 1 mm to 10.5 mm (for 1.3 mm wavelength of Chemical Oxy-Iodine laser), 3.7 min to 38.2 mm (for 3.8 mum wavelength of DF laser) and 12.5 min to 131 mm for 10.6 mum CO2 laser wavelength, each for measured C-n(2) values of 10(-11) m(-2/3) to 2 x 10(-13) m(-213). Intensity autocorrelation function measurements of laser scintillations indicate that a bandwidth of similar to 0.5 kHz (corresponding to measured tau(0) similar to 2.25 ms) is required for the adaptive optic system to operate effectively in our conditions. Laser beam wander exceeding 100 murad (both at 0.6328 mum and 1.06 mum wavelengths) at frequencies ranging from 10-20 Hz were observed under strong turbulence conditions. Estimation of number of correction zones for deformable mirror indicate that for the measured turbulence strengths in our atmosphere, the complexity of the AO system at 1.06 mum, 1.3 mum and 3.8 [mum wavelengths will be very high as compared to 10.6 mum system where the actuator requirements are much less and within manageable range.
