This article proposes a novel techniques for unsupervised learning in image recognition using automatic fuzzy clustering algorithm (AFCA) for discrete data. There are two main stages in order to recognize images in this study. First of all, new technique is shown to extract sixty four textural features from n images represented by a matrix n × 64. Afterwards, we use the proposed method based on Hausdorff distance to simultaneously determine the appropriate number of clusters. At the end of the unsupervised clustering process, discrete data belonging to the same cluster converge to the same position, which represents the cluster’s center. After determining number of cluster, we have probability of assigning objects to the established clusters. The simulation result built by Matlab program shows the effectiveness of the proposed method using the corrected rand, the partition entropy, and the partition coefficients index. The experimental outcomes illustrate that the proposed method is better than the existing ones as Fuzzy C-mean. As a result, we believe that the proposed method is filled with a potential possibility which can be applied in practical realization. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Nearshore sandbars crest position dynamics analysed based on Earth Observation data

Understanding long-term underwater sandbars dynamics is a key element for optimal coastal zone management, but this endeavour is often held back by data availability. In order to increase the spatial and temporal resolution, availability and quality of sandbars observations, this study proposes and evaluates a new approach for automatic extraction of sandbars positions from freely available satellite imagery, using a case study of complex waters located on the Danube Delta coast, Black Sea. Validation of the satellite extracted sandbars locations against 4 in-situ measurements between 2016 and 2018 shows a very good correlation between the two datasets, demonstrating the high accuracy of satellite-derived data in revealing the underwater morphology of the upper shoreface along large areas and with high temporal resolution. The obtained sandbars positions were then integrated into an automatic workflow able to accurately represent the seasonal and multi-annual sandbars dynamics and also to give an insight about the sandbars alongshore behavioural changes. The results are similar to the ones previously suggested by other studies, which empowered different methods. These prove the high potential of the newly proposed algorithm to be used for the automatic extraction of the positions of underwater features in the surf zone on other sites worldwide, after proper tuning of parameters in accordance with local conditions. The main constraints of the proposed approach are represented by the omission of sandbars position that imprint a low signal on the satellite image due to increased water depth (especially for the outer bar), high turbidity (mostly for the inner bar) or any other noise generation situation (sun glint, small wind waves). The main advantages of the described algorithm are related to the simplicity of implementation and adaptability to other areas of interest and other types of satellite data.

automatic Brain Morphometry and Volumetry Using SPM on Cognitively Impaired Patients

Alzheimer disease (AD) is the most common type of dementia and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a syndrome with an increased risk of developing dementia. As neuroimaging is relevant in their diagnosis, the purpose of this paper is to develop an automatic classification methodology of AD, MCI and control patients. A total of 83 subjects provided by ADNI (Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative) were studied (26 controls, 24 MCI and 33 AD patients) to develop an automatic method. It allows voxel-based morphometry (VBM) optimized by Dartel coregistration and complemented with a volumetric quantification subalgorithm. The developed algorithm implements VBM automatically and segments the three main brain tissues accurately. Difference between controls and AD increased during follow-up (Anova, p = 0,001). Finally statistical parametric maps were created from output images, where morphometric and volumetric differences can be appreciated. This algorithm automates brain imaging volumetry in cognitive impaired patients and control subjects. Even with the described limitations, the developed methodology is fast and user independent and it improves the traditional voxel-based morphometry algorithm.

A new thresholding approach for automatic generation of polygonal approximations

The present paper proposes a new algorithm for automatic generation of polygonal approximations of 2D closed contours based on a new thresholding method. The new proposal computes the significance level of the contour points using a new symmetric version of the well-known Ramer, Douglas-Peucker method, and then a new Adaptive method is applied to threshold the normalized significance level of the contour points to generate the polygonal approximation. The experiments have shown that the new algorithm has good performance for generating polygonal approximations of 2D closed contours. Furthermore, the new algorithm does not require any parameter to be tuned. (C) 2015 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

automatic generation of landslide profile for complementing landslide inventory

Landslide profile has been widely used in the dynamics analysis, characteristics illustration and parameter measurement along the longitudinal direction of landslide. However, landslide profile and landslide characteristic parameters that can be derived from landslide profile have not been formally included in landslide inventories. This paper firstly presented a newly developed algorithm for automatic generation of landslide profile, and then suggested 14 parameters that can be directly derived from landslide profile to characterize landslides. The proposed approach has been coded in a freely available R script called ALPA. A case study showed that the profiles of landslides with various scales and morphologies can be successfully generated by ALPA. A correlation analysis suggested that the 14 parameters can provide independent and informative complements to landslide characterization, which are different from the landslide area and volume. The results also implied that landslide area, which quantifies the total area affected by a landslide, is highly correlated with the product of volume and maximum drop height and the product of volume and maximum residual height, which are related to destructive power. Although limited by some complications, ALPA provides a practical tool for producing landslide profiles and landslide characteristic parameters, which are valuable complements to landslide inventory.

Innovative ultrasound approach to estimate spinal mineral density: diagnostic assessment on overweight and obese women

The aim of this study is to assess the accuracy of a novel ultrasound (US) approach for lumbar spine densitometry on overweight and obese women of variable age through a clinical validation study. The US method was originally developed in women with body mass index (BMI) < 25 kg/m(2). In this study, 382 female patients were recruited (45-80 years, BMI > 25 kg/m(2)) and underwent dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) of lumbar spine (L1-L4) and an US scan of the same vertebrae L1-L4, performed with a dedicated device providing both echographic images and raw' radiofrequency signals. Acquired US data were analysed through a novel automatic algorithm that performed a series of spectral and statistical analyses to calculate bone mineral density employing an innovative method. Diagnostic accuracy of US investigations was quantitatively assessed through a direct comparison with DXA results. The average agreement between US and DXA diagnoses was acceptable for patients aged 45-65 years (81.5%), while a slight decrement was observed for older patients (69.6%), which can be partially due to a decrease in DXA accuracy because of age-related degenerations. The adopted method has a potential for early osteoporosis diagnosis in people younger than 65 years, independent of their BMI.

An automatization of Barnsley's algorithm for the inverse problem of iterated function systems

We present an automatization of Barnsley's manual algorithm for the solution of the inverse problem of iterated function systems (IFSs). The problem is to retrieve the number of mappings and the parameters of an IFS from a digital binary image approximating the attractor induced by the IFS. Barnsley et al. described a way to manually solve the inverse problem by identifying the fragments, of which the collage is composed, and then computing the parameters of the mappings. The automatic algorithm searches through a finite set of points in the parameter space determining a set of affine mappings. The algorithm uses the collage theorem and the Hausdorff metric. The inverse problem of IFSs is related to image coding of binary images. If the number of mappings and the parameters of an IFS, with not too many mappings, could be obtained from a binary image, then this would give an efficient representation of the image. It is shown that the inverse problem solved by the automatic algorithm has a solution and some experiments show that the automatic algorithm is able to retrieve an IFS, including the number of mappings, from a digital binary image approximating the attractor induced by the IFS.

Real-Time Defect Monitoring of Laser Micro-drilling Using Reflective Light and Machine Learning Models

Laser micro-drilling is a significant manufacturing method used to drill precise microscopic holes into metals. Quality inspection of micro-holes is costly and redrilling defective holes can lead to imperfection owing to the misalignment in re-aligning the removed specimens. Thus this paper proposes an in-situ, automatic inspection method using photodiode data and machine learning models to detect defects in real-time during the fabrication of SK5 steel plates with 1064 nm Nd:YAG Laser machines to reduce the workload and increase the quality of products. Further, it explores the possibility of generalizing the models to 51 different scenarios of fabrication by classifying unseen data into 51 classes. A dataset of around 1,500,000 time series data points was generated using an optical probe while drilling over 56,000 holes into test specimens. 15 different combinations of thickness and diameter were drilled using suggested parameters. An additional 12 potential defect-prone conditions were designed to obtain data during conditional drilling. Hole quality was measured for each hole using OGP 3D profile microscope measuring machine. Results showed high accuracy in specialized defect detection within each scenario and showed a possibility of classifying photodiode data patterns, offering opportunities to improve the practicality of the proposed solution.

A new auroral boundary determination algorithm based on observations from TIMED/GUVI and DMSP/SSUSI

An automatic auroral boundary determination algorithm is proposed in this study based on the partial auroral oval images from the Global Ultraviolet Imager (GUVI) aboard the Thermosphere-Ionosphere-Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics satellite and the Special Sensor Ultraviolet Spectrographic Imager (SSUSI) aboard the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP F16). This algorithm based on the fuzzy local information C-means clustering segmentation can be used to extract the auroral oval poleward and equatorward boundaries from merged images with filled gaps from both GUVI and SSUSI. Both extracted poleward and equatorward boundary locations are used to fit the global shape of the auroral oval with a off-center quasi-elliptical fitting technique. Comparison of the extracted auroral oval boundaries with those identified from the DMSP SSJ observations demonstrates that this new proposed algorithm can reliably be used to construct the global configuration of auroral ovals under different geomagnetic activities at different local times. The statistical errors of magnetic latitudes of the fitted auroral oval boundaries were generally less than 3 degrees at 2 sigma and indicate that the the fitted boundaries agree better with b2e and b5e than b1e and b6 boundaries. This proposed algorithm provides us with a useful tool to extract the global shape and position of the auroral oval from the partial auroral images.

Automated JTpeak analysis by BRAVO

Using BRAVO algorithm (AMPS-LLC, NY, v4.4.0), 5223 ECGs from a publicly available annotated dataset from a randomized clinical trial on four different compounds and placebo were analyzed. ECGs were automatically processed and JTp interval was computed on: 12 standard ECG leads, Vector Magnitude (VM),.and root mean square (RMS) leads. On VM and RMS, JTp intervals were nearly identical (228 +/- 29 vs. 227 +/- 30 ms respectively, with correlation of 0.99, p < 0.0001). On lead II, JTp interval was about 10 ms longer, but highly correlated with that measured on VM (0.94, p < 0.0001). Similarly, on lead V5, JTp was about 8 ms longer than on VM, with a correlation of 0.95, p < 0.0001. When compared to the public available annotations, JTp by BRAVO generated longer (about 8 ms) measurement and evidenced outliers conducible to both the T-wave peak (in few ECGs presenting notched shapes) and, to a lesser degree, to the J point, due to variability of the two algorithms. Differences on the drug-induced effect from the four compounds were negligible. (C) 2017 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
