This paper is about the use of the Statistical process control (SPC) to detect problems generated by the variability inside automatic process control (APC). This paper tries to find a successful tool regarding to detect values out of control in automatic system. This kind of tool afford evaluated the control strategy and will be useful for the decision makers. Statistical process control, monitoring no only the quality variables but also, variables in the automatic processes that are controlling the quality. In order to test this tool, it will be tested checking the status of moisture control in a medium density fiberboard (MDF) line, this process, is one of the most important in this type of industry. Furthermore, this useful statistical tool could be use to evaluated the performance of any process inside of an organization to help in the improvement cycles.

Demonstration of a Top-Lit Updraft Based Pyrolytic Burner with Low Emission Operation and automatic process control

In this study, a small-scale (4.7 kW(fuel)) biomass burner based on "top-lit updraft" (TLUD) technology with automatic process control was developed for process heat generation. The combustion experiments were performed using wood pellets to gain more insights on the process, its repeatability and the behaviors of the emitted gaseous and particulate emissions under different combustion phases. The emission values were compared with similar small-scale combustion technologies as well as the emission limits defined in official regulations. The results showed that the average emissions (based on standardized 13 vol. % O-2 content in the dry flue gas (STP)) over the entire process from start-up to switch-off were 29.4 mg/m(3) for CO, 80 mg/m(3) for NOx, and 3.6 mg/m(3) for total particle matter (TPM) measured within the hot gas. These results were below the official limits for wood-fueled small-scale systems. The developed process control approach resulted in very low residual O-2 content in the flue gas (approx. 2 vol. %), high flue gas temperatures and repetition accuracy. Thus, the process offers potential for further development in terms of process control, scale-up, and application in different areas.

A smart process controller framework for Industry 4.0 settings

This paper presents a smart supervisory framework for a single process controller, designed for Industry 4.0 shop floors. This digitization of a full supervisory suite for a single process controller enables self-awareness, self-diagnosis, self-prognosis, and self-healing (by definition, these "self" elements are missing from other supervisory frameworks diagnosing numerous controllers in parallel). The proposed framework is aligned with the concept of a Cyber Physical System (CPS), since its implementation generates a rich cyber physical entity of the controlled process. This CPS entity can either be considered as the process digital twin, or can provide a solid basis for generating it. Finally, the framework includes the main characteristics of Industry 4.0, such as advanced use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and big data analysis. The framework is based on four modules: (1) control and Awareness module-performing both continuous process control and adjustments, as well as machine learning (ML) and statistical process control (SPC) for identifying abnormalities that require further diagnosis;(2) process -diagnosis module-performing continual (recurrent) analysis of the process state and trends;(3) Prognosis and Healing module-performing prognosis and automated intervention via parameter changes, re-configurations, and automated maintenance;(4) External Interaction Platform-an interactive module for interfacing with experts, presenting them with the process analysis information and obtaining feedback from them as part of a learning process. Using an implementation showcase to illustrate the methodological framework's applicability, we demonstrate its real-world potential. The proposed framework could serve as a guide for implementing smart process control and maintenance systems in Industry 4.0 shop floors. Improving drum sieve performance in lightweight packaging waste recycling by automatic parameter adjustment through 3D laser triangulation-based process monitoring

Current lightweight packaging (LWP) sorting plants are underperforming, and one of the most important reasons is the fluctuation in LWP input materials. Drum sieving is an essential process in LWP waste processing and recycling, as it is one of the first preconditioning steps and could influence all subsequent processes. If the parameter settings of a drum sieve can be automatically adjusted, the sorting performance of the whole plant could be improved and more recyclates could be fed back into the material loop. Therefore, this study investigated the influence from different parameter settings (inclination angles, rotation speed and throughput/material feeding) on drum sieving efficiency using 3D laser triangulation (3DLT) sensors. The results confirmed the correlation between two parameters (inclination angles, rotation speed) and sieving efficiency. Besides, 3DLT sensors enable inline determination of filling levels, which can be used as a basis for an automatic parameter control concept.

In Systems Engineering, there are two methods that are used to improve the product quality and to adjust process parameters. These methods are called Statistical process control (SPC) and Automation process control (APC). These strategies are the most tools used in improving the product quality for years, but they are developed separately and used in industries. In industry, there was no realization that these two techniques are complementary. The integration of SPC and APC started first by J. MacGregor in 1988 who introduced this concept into the research community. This work followed and supported in 1992 by the work of G. Box and T. Kramer. The research followed came up to a conclusion that combination of these two techniques will result in better performance than using each alone. This paper first will highlight the developments so far achieved in the integration of this two techniques. Then a proposed scheme will be presented to integrate SPC and APC to solve some tasks. New directions of research in integrating these techniques will be highlighted.

This publication presents the use of an automatic system in ventilation stations as a support in the process of generating cold for the needs of central air conditioning. The article presents the use of a fan station installation using atmospheric air to cool water. The free cooling system is part of the refrigeration system that is used to produce chilled water in absorption and compressor coolers. The system works when the air temperature is lower than the temperature of the water returning from the underground part of the installation to the cooling system. The effective operation of the free cooling installation takes place from autumn to spring. The system switches on automatically when the air temperature drops below - 15 degrees C. In addition, if the air temperature drops below 1.5 degrees C, one of the system's cooling lines is turned off and the free cooling installation takes over the role of the entire cooling system. The average cooling capacity of the installation in winter is about 1.5 MW. The use of this technology generates considerable savings in electricity and heat consumption, which would have to be used to produce cold.

A fuzzy self-tuning Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controller, the f-SmartPID, was designed to promote high quality and stable control, and to save time and energy by ensuring continuity in nonlinear chemical processes. Because PID controllers were developed using linear structures, its performance is severely affected when working with nonlinearities of the process. A PID fuzzy filter was designed to deal with nonlinearities. Two fuzzy inference systems were incorporated to the conventional PID controller to modify the closed loop time constant when required, originating a fuzzy closed loop time constant. The f-SmartPID updates the controller gain to avoid undesirable oscillations and maintain stability in the control loop under extreme conditions. This controller was tested in a highly nonlinear process facing disturbances and set point changes, showing optimal performance in linear and nonlinear conditions. It was compared with the Conventional PID controller and the IMC (Internal Model controller).

This article presents a sensorless control structure fur a PMSM (Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor), with a MRAC (Model Reference Adaptive controller) type speed controller, FOC (Field Oriented control) type overall control strategy, and d-q axis type reference system, for which the Id current reference set to zero is selected for reasons of torque maximization, and the current reference is supplied by the MRAC adaptive controller output. The rotor speed and position are provided by a back-EMF (hack electromotive force) sliding mode observer. The numerical simulations results obtained in the case of parameter variation and rapidly varying load torque with a random component, plus an adjustment mechanism described by first-order differential equations recommend the implementation of this structure in an embedded system in real time.

This article presents a sensorless MPC (Model Predictive control) for a PMSM (Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) in which the rotor speed is provided by a MRAS (Model Reference Adaptive System) observer, and general control strategy is FOC (Field Oriented control) type. The results of the numerical simulations show the superiority of the MPC control system compared to the FOC type control system in the case of parameter variation and rapidly varying torque load with a random component. The relatively low complexity of the number of arithmetic operations required to implement the estimation and control algorithms recommends the implementation of an embedded system in real time in future works.
