There are many embedded systems in the environment. Users are demanding increasingly advanced embedded systems. For these reasons, embedded systems have became more complicated and require a lot of time for designing. Model-based programming has came into the spotlight in the embedded system industry that demands short time-to-market, especially in the automotive industry. Model-based programming allows the developer to design and implement the system easily by using blocks that provide automatic code-generation function. In addition, blocks provide the simulation function at the design and implementation step. Among the model-based programming's features, simulation is of greatest importance because accurate simulation can reduce cost, time and effort. Most simulators just estimate that the model works correctly without consideration of hardware characteristics. Therefore, this paper proposes the new hybrid-block that can simulate not only functions of the model, but also features of hardware. We develop the 16-bit embedded system for the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) in the automotive system and implement the hybrid-blocks that have two modes of automatic code-generation and simulation. The application model can be constructed by using the hybrid-block. In automatic code-generation mode, models can generate complete C program code for a specific platform without any modification. In simulation mode, the model can be simulated by considering the hardware and software characteristics of the model. In this paper, consequence of simulation with real-value in the 16-bit embedded system is compared.

The use of automatic memory management in object-oriented languages like Java is becoming eagerly accepted due to its software engineering benefits, its reduction in programming time and safety aspects. Nevertheless, the complexity of garbage collection results in an important overhead for the virtual machine job. Until now, the strategies in garbage collection have focused in defining and fixing regions in the heap based in different approached and algorithms. Each of these strategies can beat the others depending on the data behavior of a specific application, but they fail to take advantage of the available resources for other cases. There is not a static solution to this problem. In this paper, we present and evaluate two dynamic strategies based in data lifetime that reallocate at run time the reserved space in the nursery of generational Appel collectors. The dynamic tuning of the reserved space produces a drastic reduction in the number of collections and the total collection time and has a clear effect in the final execution time.

A virtual robot teaching system, consisting of human demonstration and motion-intention analysis in a virtual reality environment, is an advanced form of automatic programming for multi-fingered robots. We propose a new segmentation method to analyze human motion data. In this method, the human motion data consisting of contact points, grasped force, hand and object position, and the like are segmented into plural primitive motions and the type of task is analyzed based on the sequence of the primitive motions. A trial assembly task using a humanoid robot hand named Gifu Hand III is shown.

The main purpose of this paper is to propose an incorporating a grammatical evolution (GE) into the genetic algorithm (GA), called GEGA, and apply it to estimate the compressive strength of high-performance concrete (HPC). The GE, an evolutionary programming type system, automatically discovers complex relationships between significant factors and the strength of HPC in a more transparent way to enhance our understanding of the mechanisms. A GA was used afterward with GE to optimize the appropriate function type and associated coefficients using over 1,000 examples for which experimental data were available. The results show that this novel model, GEGA, can obtain a highly nonlinear mathematical equation which outperforms than the traditional multiple regression analysis (RA) with lower estimating errors for predicting the compressive strength of HPC.

Multilinear algebra kernel performance on modern massively-parallel systems is determined mainly by data movement. However, deriving data movement-optimal distributed schedules for programs with many high-dimensional inputs is a notoriously hard problem. State-of-the-art libraries rely on heuristics and often fall back to suboptimal tensor folding and BLAS calls. We present Deinsum, an automated framework for distributed multilinear algebra computations expressed in Einstein notation, based on rigorous mathematical tools to address this problem. Our framework automatically derives data movement-optimal tiling and generates corresponding distributed schedules, further optimizing the performance of local computations by increasing their arithmetic intensity. To show the benefits of our approach, we test it on two important tensor kernel classes: Matricized Tensor Times Khatri-Rao Products and Tensor Times Matrix chains. We show performance results and scaling on the Piz Daint supercomputer, with up to 19x speedup over state-of-the-art solutions on 512 nodes.

Building wireless sensor network applications is a challenging task, and it has become apparent that it is crucial for many sensor networks to be able to load or update the application after deployment. Since communication is a scarce resource and costly in terms of energy, it is important to minimize code size when reprogramming WSNs in the field. This paper introduces SensorScheme as a novel interpreted WSN platform for dynamically loading sensor network applications. It is based on the semantics of the Scheme language and is equipped with high-level programming facilities such as higher-order functions, garbage collection, communication by automatic marshalling of data items, and co-routines to implement blocking I/O operations. SensorScheme makes efficient use of the little available memory in WSN nodes, uses a very compact program notation during wireless transmission, and provides a safe interpreted execution environment, preventing malfunctioning programs from crashing the device. We illustrate the use of SensorScheme and evaluate its code compactness and energy- efficiency.

We consider a single-user block-fading multiple antenna link with M transmit and N receive antennas described by a propagation matrix that is constant during coherence intervals of length T symbols, after which it jumps to a new independent value for T more symbols, and so on. We assume throughout the paper that the random propagation matrix is unknown to both the transmitter and the receiver. Computing the capacity of the above channel is still an open problem. Hassibi and Marzetta (see IEEE Trans. Info. Theory) took an important step towards this by obtaining in close-form the probability density of the received signal when transmitting isotropically-random unitary matrices. The technique used for doing this which involves taking expectations with respect to the isotropically random unitary matrix - has other interesting ramifications. In this paper we make use of this technique to obtain a variety of new bounds on the random coding exponent, which provide improved estimates, compared with the simple union bound, of the autocoding performance of codebooks of isotropically random unitary signals.

An approach to generating protocol software from the validated protocol specifications is presented. Using this approach, the protocol application generator PAGE was developed. Using PAGE, an internet protocol was implemented as a set of automatically generated device driver routines and shown to run in a testbed simulating a real network environment. Protocol software thus generated is shown to serve as complete or nearly complete routines or as prototype routines for the protocol, depending upon the protocol software application generator and its application environment. The approach helps improve substantially the reliability of protocol software and the productivity of protocol software development.< >

Synthetic Instruments are software entities, but there has been little dedicated support for them in available software tools. We claim that given the proper tools, the tasks of specifying, synthesizing, operating and maintaining synthetic instruments are simpler than the same tasks performed with natural instruments. We have developed a comprehensive software environment focused specifically on synthetic instrument technology. This new system fully synthesizes instruments and it does so automatically. Every aspect of the instrument is synthesized: the User Interfaces, the upward Automated Test Equipment drivers, the data persistence in files or databases, the calibration strategy, the visualization, and, of course, the measurement itself. Using this new architecture, we can synthesize, simulate, and implement instruments, automatically without end user coding.
